Sep 23, 2010

I have downloaded linux mint using a USB followed all instructions and removed the USB stick as requested but it failed to boot on restart. it boots ok with the stick connected. i have changed it to boot from the hard drive and still no joy. i can access the terminal when the stick is on and all i need are the instructions to enable it to boot without the usb stick.

Samsung N210 10.1 inch notebook
1GB Ram
250 HDD

Came with windows 7 and i selected to use the whole disk when i installed Debian on it, the same when i installed mint and removed debian.

General :: Windows XP Failed To Boot In Dual Boot System?

Jul 5, 2011

The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

Ubuntu Installation :: Restart After Upgrade To 11.04 Failed

Mar 26, 2011

i am an ubuntu nooby, out of curiosity i installed ubuntu 11.04 alpha3 last night. Yes, i will definitely never install an alpha version unless i wish to test it! Frankly said, i first installed 386 version on a notebook which runs just fine. So I thought why not install the 64 bit version on my pc.

Unfortunately, the system did not finish the first reboot in order to complete the installation. First it always stopped at "checking battery state". There, I read that this bug is already fixed: [URL]... I came across this thread: [URL]... So I pressed Alt +F2 in order to log in and performed sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get upgrade. Everytime there was a new update I hoped, that this will fix the issue. But when I shutdown the system with sudo shutdown now -h and restart again there is no progress. The only thing that changed is that the system no stops at "Stopping userspace bootsplash", whatever that means?

General :: Boot Error After Replacing Failed HD

Jan 28, 2011

I've got a 3 year old self-assembled system running Ubuntu 9.04, with an AMD Phenom 9850 quadcore with 4G ram on and M3A78-EMH-HDMI motherboard. I'm not really a hardware person, but the assembly was pretty smooth. A year ago (while running Ubuntu 8.04) I started getting messages that my HD was about to die (a 500G Western Digital). I ran out and bought two new HDs, a 1T WD Caviar black onto which I copied everything from the dying drive, and a 500G WD Caviar green onto which I installed Ubuntu 9.04. Everything went fine, except that I couldn't seem to get the system to boot if I removed the dying drive. So I just left it in. I've been getting "About to die" messages for the last year, but I had all the data on the backup 1T drive, and the system was actually running from the new 500G drive, so I didn't worry about it.

Last week the dying drive finally actually died, and the system failed to reboot on the next try, the error message was: Secondary Master Hard Disk Error No IDE Master H.D.D. Detected! Press F1 to ResumeNothing happened after hitting F1. There are 6 SATA ports, 4 red ones (1-4) and 2 black ones (5-6). Sadly, I failed to note which ports the drives were plugged into before I started tinkering. I seem to be able to replicate this error whenever the 500G drive with the master boot record is in a higher numbered port than the 1 T drive. If I reverse that so the 500G is on a lower port number, and if I make sure that the 500G drive has a higher boot priority in BIOS, then I get no error messages at all, but after the POST sequence is finished all I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen that doesn't respond to the keyboard (never even getting to GRUB). I can Ctrl-Alt-Delete to reboot, but nothing else has any effect.......

General :: Dual Boot Class Project Failed

Mar 19, 2010

Our A+ project was to set up a dual-boot using XP Pro & the Linux download of our choice. What we did:

1- We formatted a 38GB HD using the NTFS file system.
2- Two equal sized NTFS partitions were created.
- Partition 1 was a Primary.
- Partition 2 was an Extended.
3- Used Ubuntu CD.
4- Install Ubuntu choices were to format the HD, install side-by-side, use the the longest continuous space, etc. We chose side-by-side.
5- After the install there was no evidence of the 2d 18GB partition (which we planned to use for XP Pro).

When we booted to the XP install disc that program booted to another HD (C.

General :: Get A Message "Authentication Failed During During Boot

Jan 17, 2010

My Redhat 5.3 desktop running on an AMD 64 system was not receiving the updates from rhn until a few days ago when it started checking in and downloading updates. The updates crashed generating bug reports. I tried running yum-complete-transaction command, it aborted also. I found a knowledge base article with instructions on how to rebuild the rpm database which I followed. After completing the procedure I tried to reboot. The system gets to the logon screen and then I get the message Authentication Failed and the system locks up. The commands I ran are:

rm /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm -rebuilddb
yum clean all

I am also seeing a message during boot up that the module libxml2 is missing and when I try to download the package from rhn yum cannot find the server.

General :: Kernel Panic On Boot - Authentication Process Failed

Feb 22, 2011

I got home today to find that my KDE login screen would not let me log in. It said the authentication process failed or something and I needed to terminate the screen lock process manually. So I go over to another virtual terminal and try to log in. As soon as I enter my user name, a bunch of errors come up and I am unable to log in. "This can't be good" I think to myself, and reboot.

I am greeted by this error upon booting:
The error says that it says it cannot find /sbin/init. I loaded up a Ubuntu live CD and verified that /sbin/init is indeed present and all my other files still seem to be there. I tried booting into arch fallback on grub but that didn't work either. Midway through the day I SSHed my desktop from my phone and started it doing an upgrade. I was able to login.

General :: XP Failed To Boot After Adding Red Hat Enterprise System / Resolve This?

Jan 22, 2011

I have a Dell Precision 330 with (the latest) A09 BIOS and 1 TB SATA hard drive. There is a SATA-IDE converter between the SATA HD and the ATA133 cable. The OS was Window XP Professional SP3.

When adding RH Enterprise Linux 6 onto the computer, I created two additional partitions, one 400 GB for Linux's storage and a 10 GB swap space. I chose Window XP as the default OS.

After the installation, when the system started up, I can hit a key to have two optional OS: Window XP and Linux. If I chose Linux, the system would boot up. If I chose Window XP, the boot failed with a message that windowssystem32configsystem was missing or corrupted. I read some articles that the problem can be fixed in window's recovery console with fixboot. After entering the fixboot command and restarting the computer, Window XP still failed to boot with an error message that another file was missing.

I thought I might have made some mistakes in the installation procedure and it would be cleaner to reinstall both OS. So I tried to install Window XP Professional again. Unfortunately, after booting from Window XP CD and formating the MBR and copying the window XP files, the computer can not restart with the installed XP. Instead, the computer boot from Window XP's CD repeatedly. If I remove Window XP's CD, the computer simply can not boot at all.

I began to wonder whether RH's Enterprise Linux made some change on the MBR of the HD that Window XP can not format.

Fedora :: Error "Printer Queue Setup Failed - Restart CUPS And Try Again"

Jan 18, 2010

I'm having a problem trying to set up my HP OfficeJet 6310 printer with Fedora 12. This is with a clean install, SELinux disabled and Seems to be some issue specific to Fedora, as I've used the same setup with the same hardware without problems in other distributions. I have installed all the HP files I believe should be installed. Anyway, my printer is on my wireless network. I can see the printer on the network, as is the case with my other computers.

I followed the standard setup I use with any other distro....open a terminal and enter "hp-setup." The HP Setup utility opens and I go through the standard procedure of choosing /Network/Ethernet" as my means of connecting. Moving on, the HP OfficeJet 6310 is found without a problem. When I attempt to "Add Printer," however, I am then getting an error. The error shows, "Printer Queue Setup Failed. Restart CUPS and try again." Looking at [URL], I get to CUPS but can get nothing there so far as a printer goes.

Ubuntu Installation :: Xp And - Netbook Dual Boot - Error - Windows Boot Failed

Jul 8, 2010

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.

In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.

Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.

The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.

I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.

After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!

When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.

I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!

Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

Ubuntu :: Boot Priority Change With Every Restart After Shutdown

Mar 4, 2010

Whenever I start my PC, the information of 'First Boot device' in BIOS changes from hard disk to CD-Rom. It happens with new start, I mean, if I restart my computer after resetting First boot device to hard disk, then priority does not change. Just as I switch on computer, a black screen appears with the message:
CMOS - checksum error - defaults loaded
press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup

Recently it used to happen, that PC was not reading my hard disk containing GRUB. I have 2 hard disks. I switched the power cables of two hard disks. After that, both hard disks were shown by BIOS but the above mentioned error started appearing. Also grub takes too much time to load. It takes almost 20 seconds. Earlier I was using 'Puppy Linux'. In that, Grub was loading in fraction of second.

Ubuntu Installation :: System Will Not Boot On Restart After Update?

I installed Lucid Beta a few days ago and was happy with the way everything worked. The system wanted an update on Thursday night, I installed it and then carried on using it for about an hour, it was then shutdown normally with no errors. On Friday morning it would not boot. I pressed the "on" button it came on, all the other lamps lit ie Caps and Num Lock, the battery light is on anyway, but the hard drive light is not flashing, it's as though it isn't being accessed, but I can hear it? There is no display on the screen. I'm running an Acer Aspire One. My initial thoughts are bios related, but I can't see how that would have changed, then I think maybe the Harddrive is knackered.
