I need to know: how do not automatically restart GNU/Linux after a critical system failure(kernel panic). For some reason the pc is rebooted, actually throws the error screen Reboot just moments before, but I can't to read it before you reboot.
View 1 RepliesI have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have (had) Debian Testing running on a 250GB IDE hard drive, partitioned normally.
I also have 4x 1TB drives in a raid 5 using mdadm, and 2x 500GB drives in a raid 1 also with mdadm.
I put the two arrays in lvm using:
I then used "lvcreate" to make storage/backup 300GB, and the rest went to storage/media (approx. 2TB usable). I put an xfs filesystem on both and mounted them.
All was working fine until the system drive shorted out and died on me this morning. As far as I can tell, all my other drives and everything else is fine. I do a daily rsnapshot of the filesystem, which of course is residing on storage/backup (stupid, I know). So I have full backups of everything, but I'll have to put a new hard drive in and reinstall Debian before I can restore everything.
I've reinstalled before and simply reassembled mdadm arrays and remounted them before with no problems, but this is the first time I've used lvm, so I'm not sure what I have to do to restore everything. Is it as simple as reinstalling the system then doing a:
Duriing an up date pc requested a restart to complete. Then it rebooted so far and has stopped.I have a disc that I installed Ubuntu with and vaguely remeber the operating system could be run from the disc. Can I put the disc in and start the pc from it and still read what I had on the Hard drive?Or is everything gone and lost?Prior to the calamity the pc was running Ubuntu 9.10 and nothing else.

The situation is I removed the ADSL card from my desktop as I have no use for it for the moment. I am guessing that the motherboard is still trying to detect the Sangoma ADSL card. What is the best way to resolve this problem, uninstall the drivers for the ADSL card or change the settings in the system configuration files?
The system is not affected by this removal, just get prompted regularly about this error as configured in the kerneloops client.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot system with Windows 7. Yesterday I upgraded from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. After that, pressing the shutdown button and selecting shutdown or restart (whether on the login page or after I've logged in) will only bring me back to the login page. I can shutdown or restart if I do sudo shutdown now, but I'd prefer to use the GUI. Also, there is no sound now (not a big deal, but still not good). And I can't access my storage partition (not the windows7 partition, but a third ntfs partition with data on it). I get the error message that I am unauthorized to mount. I have the only account on this computer, so I should be authorized. This one is a HUGE problem for me, because I need to be able to access my data for work. None of these were problems before the upgrade.
Oh yeah, and quickstart is not enabled. Also, if I go to Power Management, and try to alter what to do when Power Button is pressed, my only option is Ask Me. I know these have been problems/solutions to the shutdown/restart problem in the past.

I'm trying to get a program to automatically reload if I accidentally close it. This is a remote access program, so it has to be relaunched without me doing anything to help it along if it crashes or I accidentally close it. I noticed that someone came up with a way to solve this back in 2007 [URL].. but the files don't appear to exist any more for it to work. how I might get a program to automatically reload on exit?
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter NFS mounting some system folders (i.e. lib, usr) of a slave cluster node to /lib & /usr located on the master cluster server I got into some problems: I forgot Ubuntu 10.04 was installed on this particular slave node, while the master node runs 9.10. Now, I am not able to unmount these folders using umount, or restart the system using shutdown, I get some error: " /lib/libblkid.so.1: version `BLKID_2.17' not found". Is there an alternative way to unmount these NFS shares, or to restart the system to undo the mounts? The systems are located elsewhere, so just physically restarting the system would not be the preferred option.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI use an ADSL connection which I 'dial' using the Network Manager. My laptop is connected to the modem through an ethernet cable.
The thing is the place where I stay is prone for power failure. So the modem goes out with the power. It comes back on within a minute when the power is restored but Network Manager doesn't seem to automatically re-establish the connection after it is lost once. I have to manually do it. Hence most of my downloads do not get done.
There are two host agent process ( hprsmha -WD and RSMHA ) running on my SLES 10 server suddenly hangs which is critical for my daily scheduled backup jobs.I want to create a script which checks for the 2 process and restart it automatically.so i can put it to daily cron job.My knowledge with scripting is so poor. I was having a problem with the keyring asking me for a password after I changed my user password. I googled it and found that since the password changed, I will get asked for the keyring password until I delete ~/.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring. What happened was that I wasn't paying attention that you had to generate a new keyring password before rebooting.
Now, whenever I try to login via gdm, I get this message: error initiating conversation with authentication system - general failure
How do I get it working again? I can still login from the terminal.
My network is windows pppoe. How can I configure it for Fedora 11? Is there any graphical configuration tool available for that? Also, ubuntu 9.04 logs into pppoe network after restarting as I've made some changes in /etc/network/interfaces. Is there any option available for Fedora 11 to automatically log in to pppoe network after restarting?

I have noticed that after few days of ideal system it will stop its network interface. To resolve this I have to login to the machine it self and then issue
# service network start
Is this a feature. If this is not a feature then what is this. As an workaround I am thinking of adding service network restart in cron tab for everyday in night when I am not using it.
Is there any way to automatically trigger a cron job each time I log in on my linux account.

It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.

Tried to make the /etc/pam.d/gdm mod to auto-auth keyring. Now when I boot up it says "error initiating conversation with authentication system - general failure" preventing me from logging in.
So I read that I can enter recovery mode by pressing Esc on boot up to boot to a root shell. However no amount of button mashing Esc on boot up seems to have any effect, always bringing me to the graphical login. I could boot to a liveUSB but this has all started when I got to work this morning, and don't have a USB key handy, and I'd like to get this sorted so I can do some work today!
And why does the /etc/pam.d/gdm tweak seem to be causing so many issues (googling reveals the technique has a lot of other users finding the same problem as me, however they seem to be able to get to recovery mode)?
EDIT: If I hold down or mash Esc fast enough, the computer will beep at me once or twice, but nothing changes on screen
EDIT 2: Ok found out that holding SHIFT is the new way of doing things, reverted pam.d/gdm to the backup and things are back to normal!
Will a Linux operating system lose data during a power failure as does a Windows operating system?
(If yes.) This has not come up before but I'm going to be doing some work I don't want to lose.
Could you either point me to a backup tutorial or give me the quick overview of preserving stuff with Ubuntu?
