whats the difference between restarting/stopping apache using 'service httpd restart/stop' and apachectl restart/stop. I know that using 'service httpd restart' is actually a script in /etc/init.d/httpd but what about apachectl?

I tried to set up an automatic program restart on Debian Lenny for fail2ban and asterisk. Google helped me to find some HowTos. However, all what I tried so far doesn't work. The latest version: According some instructions the following commands have been written in a file called auto_start_stop:
Code: #! /bin/sh
-> saved in the folder /etc/init.d and
-> its properties changed with a right-click to 075.
-> The links have been created with update-rc.d auto_start_stop defaults
Why this doesn't work and how I could correct it?

I was lurking about my hidden files and noticed the ".thumbnails" directory. I had been browsing the web for about an hour and had opened some image files from my drive.HOLY CRAP! I had over 2000 thumbnails in that directory! Every time an image is displayed, a thumbnail of it is created? Really? Seriously, I don't care what the reason behind this "feature" is, how do I stop it? It is simply unnecessary and a waste of disk space.

If I uncheck and recheck "Enable Networking" in the Network Manager Applet 0.7.996 I would expect the wired network to disconnect (which it does) and reconnect (which it does NOT). So I tried sudo ifdown eth0 and got
Quote:
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.
ifconfig tells me
Quote:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:64:e8:18:2c
inet addr:192.168.0.112 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::225:64ff:fee8:182c/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
[code]....
so I am at a loss. How do I stop and restart the network interface short of rebooting the machine?

Xubuntu 9.10 on a DELL Inspiron 1150.I have a problem with intermittent dropping of my wireless connection ( see Belkin 7010 thread).Once dropped, the wireless will NOT reconnect (It just sits there saying "connecting" but never does) Same happens if I manually disconnect - I can never re-connect. On rebooting it will reconnect fine & all is well for sometimes 4 hrs.How can I kill all wireless services & restart them without having to reboot the laptop?

I have a small question for you my friends."HOW CAN STOP BOOT SCREE AND RESTART ,WHAT KEYS ARE NEED?"I want to say thisC starts and I want to stop in whatever one point to read the messsage ,especially when I see "failed".I have 2 points with failed I can't have enough time because it's going fast.Of course I read the boot messages from /var/log but they are too long and to be honest evan I used in "gedit" the option "find" to search of raws with "failed" I can find some ,but other not. That's I think when PC start and if I can stop/PAUSE the boot process using some key combination I note and after I cancel "PAUSE" and PC continue the booting process.

I have a GUI for Samba already as it most likely installed, the problem is I don't have a shared folder in admin menu. I have told samba what folder to share and what user to have access to it. As well I have looked at the config file to make sure what was in the gui printed into the config file. However I cannot start, stop, restart samba via command line. I will try config package and hopefully that drops down everything,

sudo service smbd restart unrecognized service, nmbd same thing. Now it is installed, but has no script file or the script file is not in the init.d folder like it should be still trying to figure I have come to the conclusion that the daemons are not installed and am trying to figure out what those script files look like or a way to import them off a ftp, however no luck with google so far. But the scripts files don't exist on my box. how do you install samba daemons when it says samba is already installed.

I am using
# uname -rmi
2.6.18-194.26.1.el5PAE i686 i386
# cat /etc/*release*
cat: /etc/lsb-release.d: Is a directory
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (Tikanga)
CentOS release 5.5 (Final)
I have noticed that after few days of ideal system it will stop its network interface. To resolve this I have to login to the machine it self and then issue
# service network start
Is this a feature. If this is not a feature then what is this. As an workaround I am thinking of adding service network restart in cron tab for everyday in night when I am not using it.

Seems like the latest Kernel (2.6.40-4.fc15.i686) update screwed with my setup a little bit.
This is what happened:
I had about 100 updates to my F15 pending in my taskbar's update notifier.
I let the system update itself.
Reboot and desktop effects don't work.
Takes a long time to open up Dolphin.
electricsheep (OpenGL screen saver) doesn't work.
I'm assuming it's a problem with OpenGL or my nvidia video drivers which I tried reinstalling from mjmwired's guide.
That didn't fix anything.
I'm looking for a point in the right direction or a way to revert back to my previous state before the system updated everything.

I'm using debian 5 x64 with xfce.Is there a way to configure (start/stop/restart) services (especially Apache2, mySQL and PHP) using a graphical or cli tool? I tried to use sysv-rc, sysv-rc-conf, rcconf and rc-conf in the terminal but Bash didn't find them (Although Synaptic show that sysv-rc is installed).

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

I need to disable the automatic power-off on shutdown so I can just withdraw the power myself. The reason for this is that the machine should power on itself when it gets power (which is accomplished by Resume on Power Failure in BIOS). I learned that I can turn off ACPI and APM by using the corresponding boot command options. Does this have any negative effect other than disabling standby etc.? Is there another easy to accomplish solution for this problem (maybe using linux from a readonly partition and make sure all programs are closed before I withdraw the power)?

Can anyone tell me how to have Apache automatically start when I boot the system (and log in)?
It is a simple home-PC running Fedora and I put Apache on for internal/local use only (so I can get to it from my Windows box).
Right now, I have to su (to root) and run the Apache startup command.
I'd like to have it simply come up when I log-in.

I have installed CentOS 5.5 successfully and I have VNC working. This server will be a headless box that will reside in a server rack. I intend to perform any necessary maintenance on the machine remotely though my desktop computer. My problem is that when CentOS is on the login screen, I cannot connect with VNC. Once I have logged into a user account, then I can connect.
I would like the server to automatically login to one of my users each time it boots so that the VNC connection will be opened. Currently I have two users, root and Zachary. I would like the server to automatically login to the user Zachary.
In the CentOS Gnome GUI, when I go into System > Administration > Login Screen, and then click on the Security tab there is an option to "Enable Automatic Login." If you check this box a select form field becomes active; however, there are no user accounts showing in that select field. I tried typing in the user name that I wanted to automatically login, but after closing the screen it clears that username. What am I missing?

I have been using linux now for a very short time, and the more I use the more I like, however some things are just too far beyond me to figure out, like scripts, etc... So I do prefer to use GUI apps wherever possible, and I'm using SUSE 11.3I'm looking for a way to automatically manage a folder I use for auto downloads. I'd like to be able to at least:
Move files to another directory based on either the files age i.e. 2 weeks, or the remaining disk space on the disk to initiate a move function. (Preferably the 1st and then the 2nd if necessary)And then a function to lookup similar folder names and put the file into that folder if it exists. (More complex I know, I'm not holding my breath)I've been looking for something like this for some time now and haven't been able to find anything via google

I am running Debian Squeeze on my net book ( ASUS 1000PE ) with an Atheros wireless nic. It has been running fine for months automatically connecting during boot to my hidden network but all of a sudden no dice.
If I use the Gnome network manager and "connect to a hidden network" and I am all set but when I am at the command prompt ( which is how I have it set to boot to) it is a few more steps. How can I get it to automatically load. I did not have any scripts set up before so I assume it is a service I need to turn back on that was turned off in error.

I wrote this script in attempt to set-up automatic file fetch from the server using SSH; I want to collect *.pdf files and would like this to happened automatically. However, when I run below script I keep getting prompted for a password, how to include password in the script and how to export list of transferred files into the log file in txt format
scp root@192.168.1.1:/var/www/html/Apps/*.pdf /media/DataBackup/Linux/imported/ &>/home/denis/Logs/remotefilefetch.sh.out
This script works to a point, however I am prompted for a password and log file is created but remains empty.
