Apr 29, 2010im interested in improving my web designing. ive been trying to learn ajax and flash completed a couple tutorials and i was thinking about starting a project. the goal of the project is to make a banner on top of a webpage that basicly is a slide show of thumbnails. but at the same time when u click on the image that flashes by it send you to the page where u can buy a print of the image. when you hover over the banner it stops. and is all contained in its own box. i did try to use a banner slide show box b4 but it didnt do everything i wannted and at the same time it expanding the length of the webpage as it scrolled the top.i was wondering how i might get the tools and knowlege i need to acomplish my goal.

Nov 23, 2010So a friend and I are new-ish to linux (I am reasonably comfortable with basic /etc text editing, command admin). We are, however, completely new to programming and (x)html. We have a few (what we think are) interesting ideas for dynamic websites.Ideally we would like to develop our own course of study to get to the point where we have a basic understanding of programming so that our adventures in the programming of a dynamic website would be possible. Much of what we need learn to do is the following: use daily updated public-domain data from several other sites, manipulate that data algorithmically, which would then yield updating output on our site. Here is what I would like to do:
1. learn the basics of programming with a language that would teach good code habits and fundamental understanding.
2. become comfortable with (x)html
3. learn another language for the extension of (x)html into a dynamic data-heavy website.
Question could you please suggest a way about going about 1>2>3?Ideally the language of (1) would be something that would not be "wasted" just on web design etc. As a language, C really appeals to me. However, if learning this wouldn't lend itself to being helpful in learning another language for webdesign maybe I shouldn't use it(?).If (1) weren't to be C, what language would be funadmental enough to teach good coding but also be helpful in learning (3)

Jul 27, 2011Self learner developer since about 2 years, I'm trying to understand deeper how to design a database in the best and most efficient way possible.Reading about UML design, I've found this: Do not automatically add ID numbers(surrogate keys) or substitute keys to a table until you are sure that:
-There is at least one candidate key (before the surrogate is added),
-the table is a parent in at least one association, and
-there is no candidate key small enough for its values to be copied many times into the child table.
Until then, I've always did this (I mean using ID) to identify my rows.So my questions are:
1. Why should we avoid using ID to identify rows?
2. Candidate keys add some weight to our database, and this can huge if we have millions of records, so why should we use these over surrogate keys?

General :: Get A Fully Functional Machine From The Scratch?
Jan 5, 2010I recently installed CentOS 5.4 in my laptop. Initially I had difficulties in getting the machine up and running. So I went with the option of installing just the bare bones of CentOS 5.4. I did this by clearing all selections that are shown by default when you load CentOS 5.4 CD 1/6. This installed just the kernel and created only the root user. Right now, my laptop boots up in command line and I can login only as root. I would like to know if there is any document or any web URL that explains how to get a fully functional system from the scratch. Something like an installer manual or check list with instructions. Is there any document that you can refer to in situations where you have to manually install the drivers and configure the system because of some odd combination of hardware the machine has.

Nov 18, 2009While I have been using Linux for many years (Slackware), I have found myself facing a special need that I can't quite figure out.I work at a club where I use iMovie on my Mac to create a DVD that plays on all of our TV's displaying our upcoming lineup of bands.In order to save on DVD's, I would like to create a very small form factor PC running Linux with the following requirements: the computer must boot into Linux and log itself in, the computer will boot up with a thumb drive attached containing a movie file of the most Linux compatible video format. After booting up and logging itself in, the video on the thumb drive must start playing automatically in full screen mode and in a continuos loop.So the whole thing needs to be automated from boot to playing movie; only the power button should ever need to be touched.

I would expect to be able to browse to the subdirectory which I wish to access with my launcher. However, the Browse... button brings up a window which is titled "Choose a file..." and which will only "Open" a file, not a subdirectory.Is this a bug I should report or just an example of poor user interface design? If the latter, is the issue with the Create Launcher program (for bringing up a file locater) or with the File Locater program (which should have the option of selecting a location as well as a file?
