General :: Get A Fully Functional Machine From The Scratch?

Jan 5, 2010

I recently installed CentOS 5.4 in my laptop. Initially I had difficulties in getting the machine up and running. So I went with the option of installing just the bare bones of CentOS 5.4. I did this by clearing all selections that are shown by default when you load CentOS 5.4 CD 1/6. This installed just the kernel and created only the root user. Right now, my laptop boots up in command line and I can login only as root. I would like to know if there is any document or any web URL that explains how to get a fully functional system from the scratch. Something like an installer manual or check list with instructions. Is there any document that you can refer to in situations where you have to manually install the drivers and configure the system because of some odd combination of hardware the machine has.

Ubuntu :: Get A Fully Functional Desktop At Work Without A Dual Boot Setup?

Apr 6, 2011

I am once again trying to get a fully functional desktop at work without a dual boot setup. One issue is file searching. I have looked at beagle, tracker and Google Desktop. I am currently testing Google Desktop and it appears to work well, but it is not integrated into nautilus and it appears to not index my email in evolution that is accessed via an exchange server.

Beagle appears dead. Tracker looks promising, but I can't tell if it integrates into Nautilus currently without rebuilding Nautilus. If you use Tracker, can you tell me how it works with Nautilus, mapped cifs drives on windows servers and evolution in exchange mode. Also, the current version of tracker is 0.10.6, but on 10.04 only 0.6.X is available and Natty looks poised to ship with 0.8.X. Is there any advantage to compiling it? Are there Ubuntu specific tweaks that are lost if you go with source?

General :: Named Service Not Being Functional

Oct 11, 2010

One of the dedicated servers that I have does not seem to have the service 'named' functional:
root@server2 [~]# service named start
Locating /var/named/chroot//etc/named.conf failed: [FAILED]

Note that the double slashes (//) ARE part of the output as well as the long gap before [FAILED] appears. This 'named' service not being functional is not a problem which is preventing the server / the application on it from working. There are entries in /etc/resolv.conf though.

General :: Starting Completely From Scratch

Jun 22, 2011

Starting from what I would think is completely from scratch, maybe worse. A friend set up this computer on unix/linux when I expressed interest. Truthfully I don't have even the slightest clue where to start other than to offer my complete humility. If I could start with getting my dvd and cd functions to work that would be a good start.

General :: Process Of Making A Distribution From Scratch ( Concerning Libraries, Etc. )?

Jun 28, 2010

I have C in a Nutshell but I'm learning Bash right now. I've gone through a lot of LFS, but didn't complete it. I'm still learning about symbolic links, hard links, libraries, and this sort of thing. I'm wondering about quite a few things at this point. How the hell can anyone make a distribution from the ground up? Even if they start with another distribution as a base, how do they know (I realize one person doesn't do all the work) what to do, what order to do it in, how to synchronize what they're doing with what everyone else is doing, etc. How do you know which software to compile and install first? etc.

Also, I'm entirely confused by this: how can everyone (even large teams) get everything working together? Knowing that this works with that and that doesn't work with this unless it's patched but that's what we're going with, etc. I can't understand how these things can be done without an almost unbelievable amount of effort unless a lot more is done by ./configure and make than I know about at this point. And I don't understand how libraries work at all. I mean, I'm going to learn a lot more and I've been reading a lot... but how can all the distributions just download and install 50 updates at a time and not have to restart the computer most of the time!? There are a hundred things happening in the background constantly. How does everything not just fall apart as soon as you update one package, let alone 50 at a time!? I realize this is stuff that you learn by reading, but I've been reading for quite a while now and I do not understand even the basics about why any of this works or how to know what works and what doesn't unless every single little piece of every distribution is gone over with a 50,000-page reference manual that's constantly updated. And all of this can't be as complex and hard to do as it seems, or there couldn't possibly be a hundred distributions that work and are updated constantly. Linux From Scratch is a good example. You have to download all the very specific versions of the software and patch it with special little patches, etc. How the hell can anyone keep track of all of this? Going by what I know about things, it's almost hard to believe that it's even done.

General :: Fully Automated From Boot To Loading File?

Nov 18, 2009

While I have been using Linux for many years (Slackware), I have found myself facing a special need that I can't quite figure out.I work at a club where I use iMovie on my Mac to create a DVD that plays on all of our TV's displaying our upcoming lineup of bands. In order to save on DVD's, I would like to create a very small form factor PC running Linux with the following requirements: the computer must boot into Linux and log itself in, the computer will boot up with a thumb drive attached containing a movie file of the most Linux compatible video format. After booting up and logging itself in, the video on the thumb drive must start playing automatically in full screen mode and in a continuos loop.So the whole thing needs to be automated from boot to playing movie; only the power button should ever need to be touched.

Out of curiosity, can you chainload a Linux system via a Windows executable within Windows at the ordinary desktop?Knowing windows there would be enough holes to write at any memory address without "permission", but can it be done with a humble executable? Or is Windows just too active, without the chance of nothing happening at any one pointo that everything can be exited cleanly non-existent?I'm not asking for a program or guide to do this and neither do I aim to do it. As I've stated it is all out of curiosity on whether or not some sort of protection is in place to stop this kind of thing

Fedora :: How To Get Skype Completely Functional

Feb 4, 2011

I have an older Compaq MT D220 with 2.4 GHz Celeron proc and 756 MB RAM, with F14 installed exclusively. I've yet to get Skype completely functional under these conditions. The loopback audio only test usually produces no sound or very broken sound. I tried upgrading my DSL from 3MBps max downstream and 0.5MBsp max upstream, to 6MBps max up and 1Mbps max down - to no avail!

System Monitor shows CPU and memory are below 100% utilization, and Skype's real time call stats show 0 packet loss. Perhaps using a leaner GUI than Gnome? I'm happy to report that as expected, other than this Skype issue and some lingering DVD-ROM and BackupPC issues, this old HW is much more tolerable with F14 than Windows XP!

Debian Hardware :: Non Functional Touchpad In Squeeze?

Nov 6, 2010

I am very eager to get two-finger scrolling in my acer 5740, but the big issue is my touchpad is not fully functional

"xinput llist" already detects the touchpad as
SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad  id=12   [slave  pointer  (2)]
The xorg log shows dual loading of touchpad driver
(**) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Applying InputClass "evdev touchpad catchall"
(**) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Applying InputClass "touchpad catchall"

[Code]...

But still after completely removing the xorg log and restarting the X, the log reports as

(**) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Applying InputClass "evdev touchpad catchall"
(**) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Applying InputClass "touchpad catchall"

"synclient -l" though shows a long list of already set values, the touchpad is not working properly. How can I prevent this dual loading of drivers ? Kindly enlighten me , so that I can have a properly working touchpad. If any more info is required, then please ask me. There is no xorg.conf. I tried to generate one by "Xorg :1 -configure", but the generated file did not have any section related to touchpad.

These are the configurations. They are the same on Centos and Fedora. But as I said. the FcgidMaxProcessesPerClass doesn't work (I'm testing it trough ab), even that I see Server API - CGI/FastCGI in phpinfo(). I've been fighting this problem whole week and I'm a little desperate,
