View 2 RepliesI am attempting to setup a network to network VPN tunnel between our main office and a temporary location. This location need full VPN access back to the main office's network.Anyhow we have spent about 3 solid days attempting to make this work without any great success. Here is our network scheme for these two devices.

I come here today for a little advice on which software would you use to draw a network topology?I've seen many people doing nice one with Visio but unfortunatly the compagny where I'm working for doesn't have it.Any recomendation on a free software as possible? (The network size is about 200 PC and ~20 servers Linux and windows)

So I was wondering if there are some good general Linux blogs or Ubuntu blogs or sites that you guys use. My definition of good is:
-Fresh content(It seems like when ever I find something I want to try, the info is from like 2006)
-Good site design(Again something not from 2006)
Something like a Lifehacker that focuses on Linux or Ubuntu would be cool.
I followed [URL] to install and use Cisco VPN to connect to my office network. After importing the .pcf file, I am able to connect without any issues. However, once the connection is established, I am not able to either browse the internet or open any intranet sites. If I do ifconfig, I do not get a office IP however the tunnel IP shows up correctly. I am not sure what the issue is.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI live in Japan and am trying to print to a network printer (Richo Ipsio C411 PS). Couldn't find the ppd in the foomatic database. At my previous school, I had no problems printing to the printers on the network once I found the ppd. A few months ago, I transfered to a new site. Unfortunately, when I send a print job on the network here, the printer just gives a Japanese message that says "command error." I've tried other printers on the network (all different models of the Ipsio).
I went to the Japanese Ricoh website and it recommended a generic printer ppd. I downloaded that, but it didn't work. Then I got the ppd off of the windows driver CD and tried that. Again, no success. I have no idea what I'm doing (obvious, but should be noted) or how to get this started. I also tried 2 versions of Ubuntu -- I'm running 8.04 and 10.04.
Attached are copies of the ppd files if it helps.
Can anyone recommend a reliable network laser printer for a small office (it will be used quite often)Actually, it doesn't have to be laser - what's more efficient?Obviously it has to work well with linux.

If I am to open a office 2003 (doc) or office 2007 (docx) file, it will open wine and office 2007 to edit the file. This is the desired behaviour. If I am to open an office 2003 (doc) file in firefox, openoffice will be opened. If I am to do the same with an office 2007 (docx) file, wine and office 2007 will open.where to start to get wine/office 2007 to open files from firefox?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSmall office... 20-30 computers all windows based. xp/vista/windows 7. 3 Servers running ubuntu 10.04... 1 domain controller, and two file servers with samba. We want to be able to login once in the morning, and then not have to worry about users/passwords at all throughout the day. So I was thinking that I could setup a PDC and then make the two filservers both BDC's and use ldap to authenticate everything. Would this even work out? and is there a better way to do it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am looking for some advice on how best to lock down our office network to keep our employee's from wasting time on sites like facebook and ...... This will be my first time setting up a server as a gateway in a production environment so I thought I should get some suggestions on what the best packages would be to do this.
I essentially need to lock down our network so that i can monitor what everyone is doing on the Internet and block it if needed. it doesn't have to be web based or have a bunch of gui's, im fine with command line, configs and log files, but it would be nice.
I'm interested in commercial products as well as long as they are linux based.
I am wanting to setup an office network consisting of three computers and one server. We already have the equipment ready with Vista Business pre-installed on the computers. I want to be able to create a network which allows users to use any machine as this will reduce downtime should a machine break. Also I would like user's files to be held centrally on the server which makes backups easier.
The most important element here is data backup. As like most businesses we are moving away from paper and using the computers to store important records such as customer information. If this data were to be lost, the business would come to a complete halt.
I have been looking at the idea of installing a Microsoft Small Business Server as it would be nice to have centralised control of the machines. However the cost would be over 800 which can not be justified for three machines and five users. Therefore I am turning to Linux for a alternative solution. I have previously used CentOS and Ubuntu for home use but never really gained much knowledge or experience of either.
It is my understanding that Samba can act as a Primary Domain Controller, which if I'm not mistaken is where it handles the network logins and profiles. Is this correct? I have come across many samba tutorials online but whats confusing is they are all different. Some of the tutorials involve using Kerberos and OpenLDAP. Do I need to learn about either of these? What do they do and what benefit will they bring?
Finally, I see Samba 4 is in development and is likely to bring a lot of new features which aren't available in Samba 3. Is this worth waiting for because I don't want to be upgrading everything again 6 months down the road?
So I've been asked to install a file/printer server and, possibly, inet proxy for a small office (5 PCs). My concern is: There are:4 PCs on XP x32 1 PC on Win7 x642 Printers, one of them with a scanner Some buisness software they use does not cope with win7.Had hard time installing additional x64 drivers for printer (which are obsolete by now, I guess). Network runs on a simple router which is connected to internet. For now they have been using simple sharing of C: folders, which had freaked my out a bit.
So..Despite XP being old and a presence of x64 machine on the network, do I:install x64 server edition install x32 one What additional software, besides Samba and printer/scanner drivers, I will need to handle both architectures? I have rather basic understanding of how servers work, i.e. I run samba, apt-cacher, torrents on my home network.

I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.
I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.

I tried uninstalling it and installing open office and also in the soft center open office is more than once, but I tried the different versions and I still get the same problem.
Gnome 2.30.0 (Ubuntu 10.04) I wish to create a launcher to a particular subdirectory.- right click on Panel and select Add to Panel- choose Custom Application Launcher- Set Type to Location- input desired NameNext to the Location text box is a Browse... button. I would expect to be able to browse to the subdirectory which I wish to access with my launcher. However, the Browse... button brings up a window which is titled "Choose a file..." and which will only "Open" a file, not a subdirectory. Is this a bug I should report or just an example of poor user interface design? If the latter, is the issue with the Create Launcher program (for bringing up a file locater) or with the File Locater program (which should have the option of selecting a location as well as a file?
