General :: Chainload Into A System In A Fully Loaded Windows Desktop?

May 4, 2010

Out of curiosity, can you chainload a Linux system via a Windows executable within Windows at the ordinary desktop?Knowing windows there would be enough holes to write at any memory address without "permission", but can it be done with a humble executable? Or is Windows just too active, without the chance of nothing happening at any one pointo that everything can be exited cleanly non-existent?I'm not asking for a program or guide to do this and neither do I aim to do it. As I've stated it is all out of curiosity on whether or not some sort of protection is in place to stop this kind of thing

Ubuntu :: Grub2 - Chainload EZBoot - Windows PE And Add A Menuentry For ISO?

Mar 20, 2011

I've long been looking for a way to make an ISO out of a CD I have, write it to a partition and boot it with grub2. I understand that doing that is non-trivial so I decided to go a different route (for now). I extracted the contents of the CD (iso9660) onto a NTFS partition (/dev/sda6). The CD has several things on it, it first loads a text-based screen that has options to either boot the first HDD, boot to a Windows PE environment, or boot some isolinux-based utlities. I've observed the following on in its root directory:

/boot/BCD
/boot/bootsec.exe (and others)
/ezboot/*.ezb
/isolinux/isolinux.bin (and others)
/bootmgr

So based on what I see when I boot the CD, and the files I'm seeing on it, the EZboot loads first, then either the Windows PE bootloader or ISOLinux depending on what you pick. I have grub installed onto it's own dir and it works fine for linux. When I ran grub-mkconfig it found a Windows Bootloader on /dev/sda6 but when booting to it the machine resets. So the Question is: Can I chainload EZBoot? If not, can I chainload Windows PE and add a menuentry for ISOLinux?

General :: Disable 3G USB Modem Internal Storage From Being Loaded By System Kernel?

Mar 1, 2011

I've got a problem with my 3G modem [Huawei E122].
It has internal storage and kernel assigns a device [/dev/sdX] to it.
Because of that, every second time my machine will not boot - kernel panic - as my usb hdd gets assigned /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda.
I cannot use LABEL nor UUID in root= kernel parameter, as it is only available when using initrd, and I can't use it - I am using Debian on my router - mips architecture machine.
I have to prevent this from happening, as my router has to start everyday and I have to be sure it works ok. I don't have physical access to restart it when something goes wrong.
I don't use my modem internal storage, there's no SD card inserted. However kernel detects the reader and loads it.
I can not prevent loading od usb drivers since my hdd is on USB as well.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Not Fully Loading KDE Desktop?

Feb 25, 2010

This has happened to me twice in a row while installing kubuntu 9.10 on the same machine:I get the OS installed and it prompts me to reboot the machine. I do so. On the first reboot, the KDE login screen never loads, and I just get a blank black screen.I then do a hard reset. From there, everything appears to work. I use the machine for awhile and all is well. For whatever reason, I end up rebooting, and when I log back in to KDE, not only do I not get my custom wallpaper, but I also don't get any desktop icons, a taskbar, etc.Right-clicks don't even work. The only thing that was loaded both times was the terminal that I had left open the last time.

Fedora :: 11, Unable To Fully Login To Desktop?

Sep 11, 2009

I'm running a Dell D630 laptop that uses the onboard intel i915 chipset for both audio and video. This is in a docking station that's connected up to a larger monitor. The laptop boots just fine as it has been for quite a while now. I get to the login prompt, enter my credentials and then after pressing enter and it looks like it's going to load my profile, the wallpaper updates but then the screen goes black for a moment and I'm then brought back to the login prompt again. The system is up on the network so I was able to ssh into it and capture the following from the logs during a login attempt.

Fedora :: Desktop Won't Fully Load After Install

Jan 29, 2011

When I load a fresh install of Fedora 14 on my system that the desktop doesn't load completely? It goes as far as giving me the desktop with a background, the icons and status bar do not appear. I am able to right click and open a konsle terminal but only when I am in KDE (failsafe)

What is weird is initially I had no problem. But when I switched to a different monitor the desktop would not load correctly. I have reinstalled the OS since then and still have the same issue.

Ubuntu :: Get A Fully Functional Desktop At Work Without A Dual Boot Setup?

Apr 6, 2011

I am once again trying to get a fully functional desktop at work without a dual boot setup. One issue is file searching. I have looked at beagle, tracker and Google Desktop. I am currently testing Google Desktop and it appears to work well, but it is not integrated into nautilus and it appears to not index my email in evolution that is accessed via an exchange server.

Beagle appears dead. Tracker looks promising, but I can't tell if it integrates into Nautilus currently without rebuilding Nautilus. If you use Tracker, can you tell me how it works with Nautilus, mapped cifs drives on windows servers and evolution in exchange mode. Also, the current version of tracker is 0.10.6, but on 10.04 only 0.6.X is available and Natty looks poised to ship with 0.8.X. Is there any advantage to compiling it? Are there Ubuntu specific tweaks that are lost if you go with source?

OpenSUSE :: Plasma Desktop Is Loaded Automatically After KDE 3.5 Has Started?

I just updated both my KDE 3.5.10 and KDE 4.5 today (OpenSuse 1.11). The problem that I have now is that the Plasma Desktop is loaded automatically after KDE 3.5 has started. So, depending on where I click or what I do, plasma and kdesktop fight for the control of my desktop.

I searched in every corners of my KDE 3.5 --and a bit in KDE 4 since somebody forced kdm4 on me-- but I haven't found who or what starts "plasma-desktop". Definitively not me! I can kill it safely but that's very irritating.

Ubuntu :: Get Studio Version Loaded Up Once Access To Desktop?

Mar 25, 2010

I performed a fresh install on my computer and everything seemed to work just fine. I then rebooted the machine and the first thing the comp asked for was a username and password in a command prompt. I entered my info and then the comp just sat there showing my username and @ubuntu (or something that i can't remember right now - I am at work). What command do i need to enter to get to the installed desktop. I actually wanted to install Ubuntu Studio but the computer i was on had an old DVD drive that was not working well and would not allow itself to be detected. Then I tried loading the ISO data on a USB but that did not fly either. I ended up using unetbootin to load the data my usb but then the install wanted to download data from the web rather than my thumbdrive. how to A) get in to my Ubuntu desktop and B)get the studio version loaded up once i have access to the desktop?

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Get The System To Shutdown Or Fully Poweroff Using The Installed OS?

Jan 10, 2011

Built new system and installed openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 with Gnome desktop about 6 weeks ago. Have never been able to get the system to shutdown or fully poweroff using the installed OS. If I use the Knoppix live CD - no problem. System boots up fine and shuts down and powers off correctly. With the installed OS, it originally crashed on shutdown and had to power off using the power button. After trying many things, the OS shuts down, powers off the fans etc, but the keyboard is still lit. I cannot restart the system without turning off power at the power supply. Starting my computer by turning off the power supply switch, waiting
10-12 seconds, turning on the power supply switch and then hitting the power button gets to be very annoying after a few weeks.

Installed KDE and switched to that to see what difference it might make. System does not shutdown, but reboots instead. Switched back to Gnome. Have tried sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now and poweroff. Identical behaviour. System is completely up-to-date. BIOS, kernel, video drivers.

Software :: Program To Full Remote Desktop From Windows To System?

Apr 6, 2010

I'm a student and I'm already able to access the university's Linux machines from Windows using a combination of Putty and Xwindows with Cygwin. The computers I'm ssh-ing into have Ubuntu on them. Is there a way to remote access them to get the entire desktop? Like having a virtual OS window, but be using a remotely accessed computer. Is there anyway to do this or should I just settle with the X11 forwarding through Putty? Thanks!

EDIT - Just wanted to mention that these are public lab computers so I can't just have myself logged in with a remote desktop set up and waiting. I'd need something that allows me to log in remotely as well on the server without needing to to change what's on the computer there.

OpenSUSE Install :: Where Is Grub Loaded On Dual-boot System

Jan 24, 2010

I am currently rebuilding a couple laptops and a desktop to dual boot Windows and Suse 11.2. Windows is installed on partition 1. On the laptops, the build goes fine and dual boot with grub is OK. No issues. But on the desktop, the exact same build (after all the on-line updates, etc) fails with "Operating system not found" on the final (and first) boot. It seems that the Suse 11.2 build is somehow resetting the active partition and the boot does not see grub or Windows. When I reset partition #1 back to "active, only Windows loads. So I guess I need to fix this by reinstalling grub. Or use the Windows boot loader.

(1) Where is grub located on my system?

(2) What partiton is the Linux master Boot record If I wanted to use the Windows boot loader and do the following command to grab the 512 bytes I need:

dd if=/dev/sna? of=grub.bin bs=512 count=1

My partition layout is below. This is output from gdisk.exe in DOS7. It's an 80gig drive.

1 = Windows-7
2 = /boot
3 = swap
