I have installed Linux on separate drive.
And XP on another drive.
By mistake I deleted the Linux Drive from Disk Management.
Now the message is like this
Please Insert Bootable CD(some thing like this)
Press any key to restart.
I installed ubuntu using wubi and then I tried installing grub 2 but it failed. I need a way to reinstall the mbr sp it will load the windows 7 loader from the first partition.

Any ides how to make it work?
EDIT: I tried the suggested approach to add a new file to /etc/grub.d, which generated an entry in grub.cfg, but it does not appear in the grub menu on boot :(

I'm trying to install MS Windows from my Linux box. Because I have no CD drives nor USB ports, I can't use any live media to boot the computer and install Windows from the installation disk. So I've created a FAT partition and copy DOS files on that, so that I can boot this partition and install Windows from there. But the problem is I still haven't able to get it to boot.
Here's the output of fdisk -l code...
I created the partition by using cfdisk to format it as type 0B: WIN95 FAT32, and made dos filesystem on it using:

But when I reboot and select the DOS entry in GRUB, it tells me that:
"This is not a bootable disk. Please insert a bootable floppy and press any key to try again."
what I'm missing or doing wrong here? Do I need to change something on the MBR of hda1 etc...

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running a dual-boot with Ubuntu (10.10) and Windows 7. Recently I edited my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file to only show one version of Ubuntu (as opposed to several kernel versions) and Windows, simply by commenting out all other menu entries. My question is if I can edit GRUB to just boot a specific entry automatically.
I tried removing all other menu entries, but GRUB still showed the menu with only one entry. I've also considered just setting the timeout to either 0 or 1 second, as this would basically achieve the same thing.
As part of instructions from Slackware Installation site, I am trying to make a boot file from the ISO (10.2VER). The command given: 'dd if=[image file name] of=/dev/fd0'
Tried image file 'bare.i' and also 'pportide.i'
Error from Red Hat OS: "opening 'pportide.i' no such file, directory" Also tried 'C:>RAWRITE bare.i a:' from WinXP command line with negative result.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI dual-boot my machine and I want it to default to boot into windows so that whenever I restart the machine remotely from my home it will be able to get back into Windows (instead of Ubuntu).
The problem is that every time Ubuntu upgrades the kernel, I have to reset the default boot item of grub back to windows. This is because the grub menu loader uses positions i.e. 6 for default OS to boot. And when Ubuntu installs a new kernel it changes that order.
I am looking for a way to configure grub to remember its default boot item under kernel updates.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am setting up a thin client boot (over NFS) with x2go thinclient. So far everything works, the client boots over PXE, mounts the NFS dir on the server. But the x2go thinclient system does not install properly. I end up with a CLI prompt, to log in. It does not start X, not does it start the x2go client in a window managerless X session.
X2go is, in case you don't know it yet, a cool Linux X terminal session system, very much like Nomachines NXserver. I like it very much, since my experience, especially with freenx has not been good.
Now I am missing some Linux knowhow here: I know that after startup (the CLI part), the display manager is started (GDM or KDM), which starts the X server and shows the graphical login. Now since X2go does not properly setup and there is no documentation about the thinclient part, I will set it up myself.
I need the system to boot up, startx and then immediately start an X program (x2goclient), without having to log in before.
I found that putting a .xsession file in to the users home dir causes that script to be run when you invoke startx.But when I put startx in a script that runs as the last one in the runlevel (as in S05startx), it does not run at all.
What is the proper way to run X and a program on it directly, right at startup?

I have Windows 7 and Fedora 14 both on my laptop in dual boot configuration. When my computer starts up it shows a screen that says press any button to select another operating system to start, then I can make Windows 7 start. But after 2 seconds, if I DON'T press any button then Fedora starts automatically. How can I change this so Windows starts automatically when I don't press any button?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from earlier versions. I have a dual boot system with Windows 7. Grub was set to boot Windows by default Things were working fine. I decided to upgrade to Grub2. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Now when booting up,the name at the top of the Grub menu is 1.98, which is Grub 2. When I run grub-install -v, it comes back grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97) which is not Grub2. Now when I boot up, Ubuntu 10.04 is the default. I have to manually choose Windows if I want to use that system. I have been unable to change the boot order following instructions from this site. Any Way changing the boot order to make Windows 7 the default. I am using a Toshiba Satellite.

I installed Windows XP Pro and RedHat Linux Enterprise 5 on my PC for my purpose. The PC is used by other family members too and they need only Windows OS for browsing. It is becoming problem for them to reboot after the PC enters into Linux by default. I am still learning Linux and I want to edit the /boot/grub.conf file to make Windows as default OS to boot. The following is the content of my grub.conf file (FYI):

My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.
Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?
I have a USB drive on which I want to install Arch Linux (using the installer, not unetbootin or something similar, as I want the drive to be persistent.) The computer from which I want to boot this USB supports booting from a USB floppy, not a normal drive. Is there any way for me to make a USB floppy on another drive and use that to boot the normal USB drive?

I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?

I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10.
