View 1 RepliesI have a program which mounts /dev/sdb1 for which I lack the source code. This device does not exist on my RedHat 9 system and I want to create /dev/sdb1 such that it's an alias for /dev/hdb1 Can I do this? with MAKEDEV?
I need to have an alias which will allow it to mount, not create a symbolic link to an already mounted directory. i.e. 'mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/harddrive' should actually mount /dev/hdb1
Got an external harddisk and when inserting it into my desktop running openSUSE 11.2, dolphin will recognise it as /media/testing. Wanted to rename the device label from "testing" to "Backup". Googled and understand the way to do it is to issue this command e2label device new_label Mounting the external harddisk and issuing the above command returns
e2label: Is a directory while trying to open /media/testing/
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock. Without mounting the external harddisk and issuing the above command returns
e2label: No such file or directory while trying to open /media/testing/
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock. The command lsusb returns Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1058:1010 Western Digital Technologies, Inc. How can I figure out the device name (/dev/sdx) of this external harddisk?
For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed ZTE MF 626 modem in my F10 with kernel 2.6.27.12-170, i run usb_modeswitch and so far things happened normally. Watching through /var/log/messages it says that F10 detects two port device for this modem: ttyUSB1 and ttyUSB2, and in the sequence it disable port ttyUSB1 BUT Network Manager still set this port.I mean, when i connect via wvdial appointing to ttyUSB2 i get connection, but Network Manager fails to do it appointing to ttyUSB1. How to change device port in Network Manager?
View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning Fedora 13, I cannot add my HP J4680 through the HP Device Manager. I get an error message saying that the print queue cannot be started and it asks me to restart CUPS. I tried restarting CUPS and adding the device. It did not work. The printer is on my home network wirelessly. I can add it through the CUPS web interface and print, but then I cannot access the scanner. I tried adding the device after it was already added through CUPS, but that did not work. I would like to use the scanner; I don't really care about the fax.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've always run as root on Slackware, but having done away with Ubuntu for now, all of my machines including the family desktop are running Slackware. There have been several ups and downs and the last one that I know of (for now) is the HP Device Manager. It doesn't run as root so I've never noticed that it drastically slows down printing via a shared printer. Disabled the system just sends it's requests to the samba/cups server and starts printing instantly. The HP Device Manager seems to go through an intialization step each time that takes several seconds before I can even hit the "print" button.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI got a nice Neximage webcam for my Nexstar Telescope for Xmas so I'm trying to get it working with kstars and INDI (Instrument Neutral Distributed Interface). I'm using opensuse 11.3 (tried on both 64 bit on PC and 32 bit on my laptop) and Gnome. I've installed libindi and kstars and as many dependencies as I could find but it seems that no matter what I do I can't get any telescope drivers to appear in the device manager.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed 10.04 on several machines as well as imbedded inside VISTA. All of these installs work fine except the one on my HP Pavillion dv9000. The synaptics device on these machines is very touchy in all operating systems, but caused a strange issue in ubuntu 10.10. While connected to the internet and working fine I barely touched the pad and everything quit. I rebooted and found no way to reconnect to the internet. On the panel there was a little icon about the connection manager. Hovering over this icon gave the message "Connection Manager daemon not working". The usual tab to "enable networking" was dim and could not be activated.
I searched for several hours and found no reference regarding this daemon. Is there a source of the op sys names for such daemons and what sort of terminal command would I use to restart it if I knew what it was called? I ended up scrubbing the partition and reinstalling. Even the recovery process would not get the daemon to restart.
I just brought up FC12 on our VSphere to begin testing..The nic did not configure properly for some reason.. I was able to go to command line, and do an "ifup ifcfg-eth0" and DHCP got an address. Go into GNOME - System-Administration - Network , or system-config-network the "Activate/Deactivate" is greyed out. Also, GNOME - System-Administration - Network Device Control show NO device..

I've bought an X10 Home Automation USB interface: the CM15.
This is the information lsusb gives:
skerit@KIP-DU-SKER:~$ lsusb Bus 008 Device 002: ID 0bc7:0001 X10 Wireless Technology, Inc. ActiveHome (ACPI-compliant)
But this tells me nothing about where the device file is! How can I find that, or create one myself?
Why there are two so similar command in Linux? and normally what are the circumstances to use each of them?
View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop...I just rebuilt another computer (Ubuntu 10.04-Server) and when I attempt to ssh to the box I of course have the ssh key from the old install. I get the messageQuote:Add correct host key in /home/ken/.ssh/known_hosts to get rid of this message.Offending key in /home/ken/.ssh/known_hosts:3So how do I determine which key is hosts:3? It is not the third key in the known_hosts file - I deleted that one and got the same error. As I only have 4 other computers on my network I generally just delete all entries from known_hosts when I reinstall the OS on one of the others. It is about time I learn how to do it correctly

However kfind is not returning any results either - i feel a bit stupid and I'm sure there's a simple answer to this but How do i locate files under Mandriva linux? Is there a simple KDE application for that or do i need to look at kfind settings? Does file search only work with indexed database?

However I am not sure what to fix.I had run Dmesg and it is complaining that it can not locate the Nvidia driver. I believe it mentions Nvidia.ko but will need to verify that.My thought was that if I just did an "upgrade" maybe that wold restore the GUI and I could go forward from that. I am trying to get awaay from the MS world.
