Ubuntu :: Locate The Error Log For Synaptic Package Manager?
Jun 3, 2010
This morning, Update manager downloaded and attempted to install linux kernel image and header files but failed with some sort of error. I'm trying to locate the error log for synaptic package manager. Anyway I rebooted and everything seems to work okay. Did anyone else have this problem? This is from the history:

whenever i tried to open Synaptic package Manager the following messages shows:
E: Type '.net/tualatrix/ppa/ubuntu' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tualatrix-ppa-maverick.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
Ubuntu Software Center, Update Manager, Synaptic package Manager all are jammed and indicates the same error. Except these everything works perfectly.

I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former.In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attachedDebian_error_msg.png? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Got Karmic Koala up on running on my main computer and have been going through Beginning Ubuntu Linux, Fourth Edition. It was printed during Jaunty Jackalope, but it looks like its information applies to most areas.
However, it says I should be able to find msttcorefonts in the Synaptic Package Manage, and it's not there. I double checked Writer and Times New Roman and the other true type staples are not there, so it's not that it was installed with the boot disk.
Has the name of the package changed?

I need some assistance on getting Synaptic Package Manager to start correctly. I can start it from the command line without any errors. When I try to use the shortcut under the /System/Administration menu it ask for the password but nothing ever opens up nor is there an error. My source list is fine. I have ran "sudo apt-get update".
