During booting of lupu 5.20 ,It starts searching for puppy files in computer disk drives, says boot partitions not found, dropping out to initial ram disk console then /bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off # it remains at this position for ever. I have been using lucid puppy 5.1.1 with pen drive through multibooting software of pendrivelinux. I have P2 with 256MB ram, hdd 10GB,usb pendrive 1 GB.

I have disks of Lucid Puppy 5.11 and MacPup 5.11. Both disks run very well on my laptop, an old 2001 model Sony Vaio which is already booting Ubuntu 10.04 UNE.
But neither finishes loading on my HP Pavilion a1020n desktop, which is running Windoze XP Home. They both bog down on looking for optical drives... interesting as I am loading them from CD and it reads the optical drives fine up to that point.
It's sad that a quick-loading portable Linux won't load at all on my newer, faster machine.
Maybe it's because the laptop has GRUB already? My HP chokes every time I try to modify the boot sector, lots of "wonderful" security features to keep Windoze from "getting corrupted".

I'd like to know if I could update my installation via another pc if I backup my sfs and 2fs files and load it from another pc. I wonder if Puppy includes driver files specific for the pc upon creation of the sfs and 2fs files.

When I try booting my computer under Ubuntu, it freezes whenever it gets to the part of the purple loading screen (with the Ubuntu logo and the red/white dots indicator). I won't load any further, but I can still turn it off by pressing the power button. Has someone else got this problem? Ubuntu was my main partition, and I don't have any practical way to make a hard install.

Ok, this is not a matter of life or death for me. I am just an experimental geek. I had a three partition HD originally, one blank, one with my home directory and one empty one. Then, I used unetbootin and put puppy on my empty partition. Now, puppy works, but I wantt a way to switch. I can reinstall, I just want a way of having several linux OS's on a hard drive.

I installed Puppy Linux on a partition on an older 2000-era computer. The other partition had Windows ME, which crashed and burned recently. Lately, the computer has started to open GRUB very slowly. It is also slow to boot Puppy Linux from there. I reinstalled GRUB, to no avail. I decided that the problem was probably a slow BIOS, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know of another possible problem, or of a good boot-disk BIOS diagnostic tool? I tried using a couple of the tools on the Ultimate Boot Disk, but they all got hung up, displaying: - InitDisk as the last line in the sequence.

Since puppy installs in ram, unstead of on harddrive, does that mean you could not use that computer as a dual boot one? I mean won't puppy always be wanting to run on boot up, since it's not on a seperate partitian ?

I'm very new to Linux and recently setup a desktop PC with Puppy 5.2.5. only. I chose to have a permanent install on the hard drive and loaded additional PETS and utilities as I thought needed for my use. Last night after immediately booting up the PC I had a power cut lasting a few minutes. When power returned and I repowered the PC, I found during Puppy's boot sequence it reported an error and remained in what appeared to be a console mode - did not carry through and load my desktop. So I inserted the Puppy CD and booted from that but I'm afraid I'm not familiar enough with Linux to understand how I can get back my original desktop setup and run once again from my hard drive without having to go back to scratch.

I am new to Linux and I am trying to install puppy on an old IBM thinkpad 600X (10gb hd, 196mb ram) When installing puppy from a cd, it loads up and does the kernel stuff before "Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives" - this takes about 10 minutes before saying "pup_421.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial ramdisk console" then it goes to "/bin/sh can't access tty; jon control turned off". then it stays like that and doesn't continue.

I have a question that is really probably a lilo question, but here goes. Can you use lilo to boot different linuxes on separate hard drives. Like this.
/dev/hda1 - Slackware 13 with lilo in MBR
/dev/hdb1 - Puppy linux
Here is my lilo image area:
[Code]...
Boots Slackware ok, but when booting puppy it screws up and seems to be printing the boot messages for the Slackware kernel on hda1. Now, how do I tell lilo to find the puppy kernel?

I run a dual boot Windows / Lucid on my Acer Aspire 5740-6378 laptop. I was trying to fix a problem with my backlight per a help forum on the subject and I screwed up a boot command. I rebooted and the purple Ubuntu screen goes to boxes and a black screen with only my number lock light flashing. I looked under the edit command option at boot up and this is the code that I get;
linux/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-Generic root= uuid=f8430443-1824-4965-91c8-2760449428b3 ro no modeset acpi_backlight=vendor quiet splashac pi_osi=Linux
I know that this is the problem, because I recognize the code that I entered. I would love to continue to use Ubuntu, so please help me figure out what I need to do on a command line when I boot up to fix it.

I multiboot my Lucid with Win7 and any other Linux Distro (I frequently keep changing these, presently using or trying Fedora Lovelock).I have noticed that the time between Grub Menu display and Ubuntu Splash screen has increased by a good number of seconds. I have set my Grub to select my default OS (Lucid lynx) after 3 seconds and which it does. But after that a black screen with blinking _ is displayed for sometime before Ubuntu loads with its splash screen.
I wonder what caused this? It was not the case before when ubuntu splash appeared almost immediately after Grub menu.

I am trying to install Fedora 12 x64 on my 27" iMac 10,1. I have tried both the installation dvd and the gnome live cd (both x64 i did not try the x86). On the installation dvd I get as far as the menu giving me the boot/install options - I have tried to install both with a basic video driver and the regular install/upgrade option - both times it begins loading components for the installer program (/sbin/loader) etc. After it loads sbin/loader and mounts the partitions it freezes with half the screen being the terminal txt beforehand and the other half being just a standard fedora logo w/blue background. It is not much different when I try the live-cd the only different is it does the exact same thing when the timer for automatic login is done. Any possible command line arguments that I could use to stop the graphical corruption?

I have Ubuntu 9.10, PuppyLinux431 and Windows XP on a Toshiba laptop. I like Ubuntu, but the speed of PuppyLinux is addictive, so that was my default boot until I upgraded Ubuntu which included an upgrade to Grub2.
My problem: Grub2 doesn't recognise PuppyLinux. Using information from [url] I have made an executable file named 07_Puppy in /etc/grub.d and did update-grub from root. Still no luck. I can boot PuppyLinux from the grub command line using the following commands:
Just before grub displays the boot menu, I think I see a very brief message about a syntax error, but it's gone before I can read it.
Here is the contents of my grub.cfg:

Why Grub2 doesn't see Puppy and let me boot it from the menu?

In my menu bar under Places, I could see my Windows partitions being displayed as 20 GB Filesystem and 25 GB Filesystem which are basically C drive and D drive respectively. Is there any way I could change the way the partitions are displayed under the Places menu. I want it to be displayed as C Drive and D drive instead of 20 GB, etc.

About a month ago I did a clean install of Kubuntu Lucid. I believe it was after that point I was unable to run other LiveCDs without some problems -- I first noticed that swap partitions failed or weren't detected. It appears that partition managers such as gparted, fdisk, etc cannot detect my partitions and interprets my hard drive as "unallocated" (this has been tested with multiple LiveCDs). However, as far as I can determine, all the LiveCDs with applications for mounting drives and HD backup ARE able to detect the partitions.Furthermore, when I am in Lucid, I am able to detect the partitions with gparted. It's very odd... I've only found a few situations like this on the web. Could it have something to do with the GPT?[URL]

I want to set up a web server on a PIII machine with about 800MHz processor and just under 500 megs of RAM. So how would I go about configuring Fedora 12 to do this? I've tried the small spins and I just don't know how to configure it so it will install properly. I was able to get the Gnome spin on it but when it booted I couldn't get through the log-on screen. I have an AGP NVIDIA Geoforce 6200 video card. I'm wondering it that's it. The only Linux distros I could get on the machine was Puppy and Debian. Puppy did not edit the boot record very well. Debian went on there with very minor issues, but edited the master boot record very well so that I can dual boot to WindowsXp HE. I also tried to put Centos on there but the Live CD is not installable. I have to make an installation CD from the DVD Package. Anyways, as far as Fedora is concerned, I just want a utility, light weight spin that has web-server, mail server, and eventually MySQL. Other wise I'll have to commit treason and use the horned Debian as my savior in this battle.

While I have been using Linux for many years (Slackware), I have found myself facing a special need that I can't quite figure out.I work at a club where I use iMovie on my Mac to create a DVD that plays on all of our TV's displaying our upcoming lineup of bands. In order to save on DVD's, I would like to create a very small form factor PC running Linux with the following requirements: the computer must boot into Linux and log itself in, the computer will boot up with a thumb drive attached containing a movie file of the most Linux compatible video format. After booting up and logging itself in, the video on the thumb drive must start playing automatically in full screen mode and in a continuos loop.So the whole thing needs to be automated from boot to playing movie; only the power button should ever need to be touched.

I have UBUNTU 9.10 and WIN 7 installed on my computer. I turn computer on, choose UBUNTU, do what I need and shut down computer (or reset - doesn't matter). Turn on computer again and get message:
GRUB loading.
no module name found
Aborted. Press any key to exit.
Operating System Not Found.
So I turn comp from Live CD, install GRUB and after resetting computer everything seems fine - but unfortunately not for long. Next reset and the problem is back again. The problem only occurs when I choose UBUNTU. There is no problem with WIN 7...

I installed Fedora 15 twice last night because I thought I had screwed up the installation somehow when I ran a df -h and found that it reported all my LVM partitions twice (/, /home, and /var) and it also showed /var/tmp mounted on the same logical volume that /var was mounted on (lv02 = /var AND lv02=/var/tmp). I've never seen this before and it definitely didn't appear like this in Fedora 14. Is this something new to Fedora 15?
