General :: Three Stage Backup With Rsync?

Jul 13, 2010

I've been trying to make a three stage backup with stage 0 being a full monthly back up, stage 1 being a weekly backup, and stage 2 being a daily backup. I've been trying very hard to use rsync for this but sorting files by date is proving to be problematic. Sometimes it seems to work from the command line directly, but the same command causes errors and warnings from a script while entirely failing to sort the correct files.

The common example I see for this involves commands like this:

Code:
rsync -Rav `find /home/ -ctime -7 -print` /path/to/home_backup The problem seems to be that since the user directories in /home contain files that have been altered within the time frame specified the whole directory is matched first which means that the whole directory is recursively archived as opposed to just the changed files.

I've also seen examples using the --files-from tag using the same find parameters and this one seems to ALMOST work but gives me strange warnings and fails to run at all when launched from a script.

Many of the things I've googled about using rsync to backup stuff by the date modified involves a rather snarky "You're missing the point of rsync!" to which I respond by yelling at my computer monitor followed by "JUST TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO KNOW!" I understand that rsync is meant to take care of incremental backups on it's own, that's why I want to use it specifically for a traditional 3 stage backup scheme.

SUSE :: Package A War File As An RPM Package - Always Giving Errors In %build Stage

Feb 14, 2011

Still I am asked to package a war file as an RPM package. That is an unusual RPM packaging(To me). If you guys could guide me I have a war file inside a folder, that folder is inside a tar file as a SOURCE for RPM package. The structure is like below.

[Code]...

I simply want that the war file from sources is transferred to the web app of my tomcat server through RPM. I try to package it as an RPM, but its always giving me errors in %build stage. When I try to remove %build from stage from the spec file, then it says command missing.

My system details are:

General :: Grub Loading Stage 1.5 Error 21 Win7 / OpenSUSE

Jul 28, 2011

A few days ago I installed openSUSE 11.4 on a 1TB HP external hard drive. I have some very important files for school and personal work on my main hard drive, running windows 7, so I made sure the installation only affected my external hard drive. With the external hard drive plugged in it boots just fine but when it is un-plugged it says Grub loading stage 1.5. Error 21 and it won't do anything. This kind of pisses me off because there were no warnings and nothing was supposed to happen to my main hard drive. But this has already happened and now I want to know if there is any way I could fix it so I can boot windows 7 normally and still boot openSUSE with the external hard drive plugged in.

Ubuntu :: Upgrade For 11.04 - System Can't Be Recovered

May 14, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 from clean and installed Gnome 3 without any errors. If you don't want to read all the chit-chat, you can just read the "Resume" paragraph. I received an Upgrade, but could only partly upgrade. I thought "Yay, updates! It can't hurt, can it?". While I upgraded, a friend of mine contacted me to tell me not upgrade, because it broke his Ubuntu. Too late, pal. When it was done upgrading, I could just sit there looking at dialog box saying: "Click restart to buy your tombstone". I finished my work and restarted to find that there was no problems what so ever. I booted up and logged in to find this message covering the entire screen: It is in Danish, so let me translate it for you:

[code]...

I then discovered something strange. I could press the Super-key and see the Gnome 3 interface. I could run programs, but as soon as I chose a desktop, the message from above would lay on top of the entire screen once again. I managed to save some screenshots by holding Enter, while clicking on the "Save screenshot" window......

Ubuntu :: Recovered Files / Folders From USB Are Locked?

Apr 15, 2010

I have recovered most of my USB drive, but a couple of folders are locked and look like files. I'm unable to change permissions on them and "You are not the owner so you cannot change these permissions." appears in the properties tab. The owner is "184444735 - user #-184444735" and the group is "17414907" which makes no sense to me. Most other folders and files are OK. The disaster I recovered from was a partition move that failed. I used fsck to get most things back. Any idea how I get these couple of folders (the most important one is one of them "Documents" of course). to be visible?

I have an 8x1TB raid6 array that I finally got back to a good state (see my other post here: [URL]..This is on a 9.04 server Now I can assemble the array no problem, but mounting is the issue. I think the reason might be because the array order changed. In the process of recovering I removed the /dev/md0 array and created a new array. In the create array command it told me:

Code:
mdadm: /dev/sdb1 appears to be part of a raid array: for each device in the array. I confirmed that I wanted to continue and the array was recreated. I think this overwrote the superblock, but I'm not sure.

After the sync I tried to mount the array using:

Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Shrunk - "hidden" Partition Might Be Recovered?

Mar 10, 2011

I decided to swap my existing small hard drive for a bigger one which went well. Then I formatted the old drive using a windows vista machine before putting it on my spares shelf. To my amazement after formatting my 20GB hard drive had become an 8GB hard drive. I fear the worst but remember that Ubuntu put a large swap file on the drive and wonder if Vista has just ignored the system partition. I tried attaching it to my Ubuntu laptop which reports a healthy 8GB hard drive even after formatting again. I don't know enough about Ubuntu to try repartitioning it in that so I tried DSKCHK in windows which reported a healthy 8 GB hard drive. Is all hope lost or is it a "hidden" partition which might be recovered under Ubuntu? If so, how?

Red Hat / Fedora :: GRUB Error 21 Loading Stage 1

Mar 27, 2010

My laptop is running Fedora 12. I installed BackTrack 4 onto an external USB hard drive using a LiveCD. Now when I boot my laptop. I get this: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, wait Error 21. I never touched anything with my internal drive. When I was reviewing what partitions the installer was going to format, the swap partition for my internal drive (Fedora) was set to be formatted even though I did not specify this. Fedora never used to show GRUB loading at all. Screen was blank until Fedora starting loading. Maybe this means that this is a copy of GRUB from my BackTrack disc? I ran 'fdisk' to look for anything suspicious and under /dev/sda1 (internal drive, boot partition) it says "Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary."

Software :: System Freezes (Sometimes) At 'Grub Loading Stage 2'

Oct 16, 2009

I'm using Arch with the latest updates and I'm pretty sure this is a software problem.Basically about one out of five times my system freezes at "Grub Loading Stage 2". Whenever this happens, I usually just reset my box with the reset button and it will boot up just fine the next time.I originally put it down to being a defect in my hard drive which is probably three years old now at least. However, last week I bought a brand new 1.5TB drive. I removed my old drive and am using only my new one. Same problem.I Googled for this problem and found a bunch of posts with the same issue as I'm having, yet all of those issues are with people that dual boot with Windows. I don't. I only have Arch and no other OS on my system. I then tried reinstalling Grub and that doesn't seem to have solved it.I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. I hope it's not a hardware problem. Any help is VERY appreciated as this problem makes me worry that something worse is going on.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Boot Into The OS - Error 25 GRUB Stage 1.5 ?

Jul 31, 2009

A few days ago I decided to ditch Windows for good. I read for hours about a Linux distro and settled on OpenSUSE.

I just need to say one thing. Linux is not for the feint of heart, and everywhere I turn (forums), I see computers riddled with error messages, frustrated people, and the list goes on.

I'm willing to work through this though since I feel that the benefits will outweigh anything that Microsoft can offer, so here goes.

Upon installing the new build of OpenSUSE, I encountered an error message that was fixed by hitting retry (I forgot the name, but I remember it being something like Etk3 or something of the sort).

My issue now is not being able to boot into the OS. I'm getting Error 25 from GRUB on stage 1.5

I've installed 11.1 over my Windows XP partition. I want XP no more. Additionally, I read the sticky and followed all the instructions. I also selected the KDE desktop (I still don't know the difference between that and GNOME despite Googling it several times).

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid 10.04 Crashes At Manual Partition Stage?

Apr 30, 2010

Installing Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid AMD64 from a live CD. During manual partition (allocating mount points to existing partitions), the installer crashes. It just vanishes and drops back to clear desktop of the live CD. The error check from the CD boot menu reports no errors. Running the installer from the CD boot menu (instead of running the live CD first) gives similar symptoms. At the same point in manual partitioning, the installer crashes to a black screen, then starts a live CD session of KDE.

This hardware installed the beta version of Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 AMD64 without error, and has run earlier versions of Kubuntu without this problem.

It looks like a bug to me, so posted on launchpad ...

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Stalled At Upgrading Stage - Hung Up ?

Oct 5, 2010

I have a little (well, don't think it's easy to solve) issue - my computer stalled at irqbalance (set up), /etc/init/irqbalance.conf (installing, but hung up).

So, my question is what to do? Should I just push the button for 6 seconds, unplug the power cord, or what? It's been like this for 5 hours, I thought it'd go away, but no. Of course, I'll leave it for night, but there has to be a way out. I don't want to reinstall the whole OS, I have lots of programs (and files, actually, too) in there. So, if you know what's the reason and how to deal with it, please tell me. Thank you. I know there are many geniuses in there. I launched updater yesterday, oct.3, and pushed install button only today.
