General :: Xorg - Possible To Have HW Acceleration

Oct 6, 2010

What means there exists to have three monitors, all controlled by Xmonad and have hardware 3D acceleration as well? I had the pleasure of using three monitors earlier this year, and while Xmonad and Xinerama handle three monitors easily, I had to throw in an extra display driver, and also let go of Nvidia's own TwinView (which is a hack on Xinerama). This left me with no HW acceleration and some flickering as double buffering wouldn't work with certain applications. However, the three monitors handle so beautifully that I had hard time coming back to two. I understand the easiest way to achieve HW-accelerated tri-head combo is to split into two Xorgs.

I wouldn't be able to switch windows between the Xorgs, so I'm not really into this solution. What's more, having a cheap and old PCI card along with even slightly better PCIe seemed to slow things down. Even if I occasionally disabled the third monitor from Xorg configure, I couldn't get HW acceleration to work. Only after I physically disconnected the old PCI card, I could get the games back in business. Would a Matrox Dual/Tri-head2go and a powerful Nvidia GPU do the trick? I understand Xmonad can be configured to "believe" that a "single" (as Dualhead2Go will merge) 3360x1050 display is actually two different ones? So that Xmonad's Mod-w and Mod-e would work properly there.

Software :: Getting 3D Acceleration Working On Intel 82865G - No Xorg.conf?

Mar 8, 2010

I'm trying to get full 3D acceleration working with an Intel 82865G Integrated Graphics chipset on my Arch install. I'm wondering if it's possible to get it to work with xf86-video-intel, as I can't seem to get the Intel-provided drivers to compile. As also stated, I have to xorg.conf to speak of, so I can't exactly go in and simple edit lines, unless I wrote it from scratch, which I'd really rather not do, LOL. I've tried Google (including their special Linux search mode), and LQ Search, and I can't seem to find information that's relevant enough to me that I can use. Here's glxinfo (only the (hopefully) relevant portions):

Code:

[root@archie mrcode]# glxinfo | grep -i "direct rendering"
direct rendering: Yes
[root@archie mrcode]# glxinfo | grep -i "renderer"

General :: Get 3D Acceleration With A Nvidia Card Without X?

Mar 2, 2010

I like Linux.

I like OpenGL.

I don't like X.

On Linux, is there anyway to get 3D acceleration from my Nvidia card without X? Ideally, I'd have the kernel boot, get to a console, then somehow get into a "graphics mode", where my entire monitor is just a single OpenGL screen ... and I draw stuff to it with OpenGL. Without X.

General :: Ubuntu - Disabling Mouse Acceleration In X.Org?

Mar 18, 2011

This is the Linux version of my Disabling mouse acceleration in Mac OS X question. Hopefully I'll get an answer this time.I am tired of mouse acceleration and want to have a completely linear mouse response. This is easily achievable through any of the 5 or so methods (some subtly implied) on the X.Org wiki page on pointer acceleration. However, they also disable velocity scaling.I don't want a 1:1 mapping between device and screen coordinates. I want a 1:N mapping where N is a constant.

General :: Windows - Linux Virtualization Choices With Graphic Acceleration / Video Card Support

Jun 5, 2011

I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments.

From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup.

So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments?

Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's?

Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.

Software :: Xorg-server-1.7.1 Shows Only Blank Screen After Update From Xorg-server-1.6.3?

Jan 5, 2010

my laptop is running Slackware64 13.0. Today I tried to update to X.org 7.5 (version 1.7.1) from version 1.6.3 shipped with Slackware. I downloaded the relevant source tarballs from www.x.org and compiled them with no errors. The compiled packages are:

xorg-server-1.7.1
xf86-input-synaptics-1.2.0
xextproto-7.1.1
xcmiscproto-1.2.0

[code]....

My laptop has an NVIDIA graphics card and I'm using the proprietary driver from NVIDIA. Thus I reinstalled the driver after the update and tried to launch X.org with "startx". After a short while the NVIDIA logo appears for some hundred milliseconds and disappears then. But now the screen is blank and it is not possible to switch to another VT via Ctrl+Alt+Fx. But it is possible to login from another computer and restart everything, so that I conclude that the system does not hang.

It is even possible to do work normally with the laptop from remote. If I try to kill the X-server, it ignores SIGTERM and has to be terminated by SIGKILL. But the laptop's screen stays black and empty and does not allow to switch to another VT (chvt terminates with "interrupted system call."). dmesg does not give any errors.

Ubuntu :: Sudo Xorg -configure" And "sudo Xorg --configure" Both Return "xorg Command Not Found

Mar 28, 2011

Alright setting up a friends netbook, display has been a little iffy (slow. glxgears is giving like 100fps). Couple issues: xorg.conf doesn't exist (i know thats typically not an issue) and "sudo xorg -configure" and "sudo xorg --configure" both return "xorg command not found."

glxinfo say that its using Mesa for the software rasterizer and that the driver is from mesa. lspci says the VGA controller is from Intel. I'm thinking xorg is defaulting to vesa for drivers, but I need to know how to change that to the open source intel driver

Hardware :: Xorg.conf Is Replaced With A Default Xorg.conf After Reboot ?

Apr 9, 2010

I have installed Kubuntu 8.04.2 on a USB stick with persistence to keep any changes I make after a reboot and it works fine. I then installed the 185 Nvidia driver to give me higher resolutions and it works fine.

But each time I reboot, my updated xorg.conf is replaced with the default xorg.conf that ships with that version of Kubuntu and a backup is made of my updated xorg.conf (the correct one) which looks like xorg.conf.20100409135913. I have to put the backup xorg.conf back in place to get my Nvidia driver to work with the correct screen resolutions again. Otherwise my screen resolution is too low.

What could be causing this behavor? I'm sure it not the persistence feature of the USB stick failing since a backup is made of my original xorg.conf.

I might add more information. The xorg.conf that gets changed after a reboot says "This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database." #

After researching I found a thread that posibly has exact same problem and seem to have found a solution with a modified xorg.conf (link included bellow for refrence). Any how I can realy use this fix yet because I dont seem to have access to download forum attachments.

To be more of a constructive post though, any other resources or information that can help me with this problem? Short of that post I have found very little other than just playing around with xorg.conf configurations Also while im at is there any recomendations for a lightweight window manager that would work well for this old system when I do fix this display problem? The labtop is 500 MHz with 64 megs of ram. My current plan is to install Xfce but im quite open to other recomendations. [URL]..

OpenSUSE Install :: Precedence Of Xorg.conf Over Xorg.conf.d?

Jan 26, 2011

I've read the how-tos (thank you oldcpu!) and wikis about how xorg.conf take precedence over the section configuration files in etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, if it exist. I also understand that the xorg.conf can be partial. If it is missing some sections, these will be taken from the corresponding xorg.conf.d section config file. Currently I'm using a xorg.conf generated by nvidia-settings in one of my home machines, due to a dual-monitor setup. After generating xorg.conf, the device sections are:

in xorg.conf:

Code:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"

[code]....

My question is if the Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "True" will be used or not. In other words, if a section exist in xorg.conf then it's correspondent in xorg.conf.d/ will be completely ignored *or* only the lines in xorg.conf.d/ that already exist in xorg.conf will be ignored?

General :: Connect To Virtual KVM Machine/VNC From Xorg?

Aug 24, 2010

I have a main Ubuntu system and a virtual Windows system, set up using QEMU/KVM. So, I can start Windows using virt-manager and connect to it using a VNC client. But what I really want to have is a new Xorg display that is connected to this Windows system, so that e.g. CTRL-ALT-F8 shows Ubuntu, CTRL-ALT-F9 shows Windows. That'd be a real alternative to a Linux/Windows dual-boot setup.

I know that GDM had some option to connect to another X server (XDMCP), but I couldn't get this to work with GDM2/Ubuntu 10.4. Would this somehow also work to connect to a VNC server (like the virtual Windows system)? how to make Xorg provide a display for incoming VNC connections, but nothing on how to do the opposite.

General :: Xorg Configuration For External Monitor?

Oct 15, 2010

A few days ago I installed browserlinux onto my AspireOne netbook whilst connected to a 15" external monitor of 1024x768 at 60Hz. During installation I ran the Puppy Xorg Wizard with the netbook's monitor (1024x600) switched off. It selected the optimum resolution of my external monitor correctly as 1024x768 and the 'intel' driver for the Intel 945 Express chipset. However when I ran programs and maximised their windows they would cut off about a third from the bottom. I ran the Xorg Resolution Wizard which showed a resolution of 1024x600 despite xorg.conf only showing an option of 1024x768. I tried to copy a xorg.conf from Linpus (Fedora 8) which had required some altering in the past to run the external monitor at the correct resolution but X failed to start (possibly because Xorg in browserlinux is a newer release). Would it be possible for someone to upload a xorg.conf file which would enable display the external monitor at the correct resolution (and ideally allow switching between the two monitors - under Linpus the hotkey is Fn + 4) or suggest alterations to the current file?

General :: Xorg DPMS Off: Keep VT From Turning Screen Back On

Mar 19, 2010

I have an embedded board with a small UPS. When AC power goes down, I need to turn off all power hungry devices in order to have a clean shutdown. First thing I do, is set DPMS to force powerdown, then go through the usual SIGTERM/SIGKILL/umount sequence. I have an Intel i915 Display adapter connected to an LVDS LCD panel.

Unfortunately, when Xorg dies, Xserver or the VT code turn the LCD panel back on.

I even tried working around it by directly poking the panel enable register in the Display chip, so that X doesn't know about it, but the panel goes back on when the VT comes back.

Is there any "legal" way of keeping the display off?
