The only remaining issue is that the 3D acceleration on the NVIDIA (GeForce 8600 GT) card will not activateURL]hich I have done many times now. I am now on the nvidia-173 driver as that one seems to be working the best. Even the nvidia-settings is having trouble and crashes when I try to look at the OPENGL/GLX information.I have found many instances of jockey showing that the driver is "active but not in use" which is what I am seeing. The problem is that the 3D acceleration is not working and the issue seems to be the driver.

I am sure I missing something from my xorg.conf but at this point I am not sure what I have been searching on this for days to no avail. From the log the only thing that looks like is a problem is it doesn't load the keyboard and mouse but it gets loaded later on in the file.
I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhile installing XBMC, which was working with my standard Ubuntu install, I accidentally installed NVidia hardware acceleration (sudo apt-get install libvdpau1 nvidia-185-libvdpau) on a notebook with ATI video.
Now XBMC does not work and says it requires OpenGL. apt-get remove does not work for that package because it's transitional. how I can get my stuff working like it was?
After having some trouble with Intel graphics I decided to pick up a PCI Nvidia graphics card. Now I am wondering what driver to use. Is the open source drive good enough to use or should I install the Nvidia driver? I know that things are generally easier with the default driver, especially for support on older cards, but I would like to get the best performance I can. This is for my Dad's computer, so he won't be playing any games, but if it will help with 2D and video that would be great.
The card is an Geforce FX5200 fanless card, I've heard they are well supported in Linux.The computer is a P4 Dell 3000 with Ubuntu desktop 10.04 32bit.
I am having problems installing the graphics driver (from the Nvidia website) for my Nvidia Vanta card on Ubuntu 10.04. I disabled X via terminal and then I ran a Virtual Console. With the virtual console I ran the chmod command and the went through the installation. It did bring up a message with something about my distro not having a pre-configured script (or something like that) and asked me if I would like to continue anyway. I choose Yes and the installation failed.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI made the mistake of trying to install an nvidia graphics driver from the download.nvidia.com/opensuse11.2 repository. My card is a PCI quadro nvs 295 so looks like it should be supported. The installation and update of the kernel seemed to be successful, but for some reason sax2 doesn't seem to recognise the nvidia card, even when I run "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" and I'm stuck with the VESA framebuffer graphics default in /etc/X11/xorg.conf code...
I've found tons of threads on this kind of thing but I only seem to be making things worse trying to fix it. If anyone can give me a hint and fix my pathetic-looking desktop I'd be very grateful!!! At the moment nothing that uses opengl will work either

View 4 Replies View RelatedI revived my old desktop (failed psu), and installed debian squeeze using netinst. It has a nvidia geForce 7600GT card. The driver in squeeze does not work very well, so I downloaded nvidia driver-installer. When I run it, it comes back with an error saying the kernel (I assume the nvidia graphics kernel) is compiled with gcc4.3, but the system is using gcc4.4. Using synaptic manager, I installed gcc3.3, but same error.
Next I tried to uninstall gcc4.4 and it gave a warning the system might not be usable. I did not understand it, but I went ahead and uninstalled gcc4.4 and guess what, the system is not usable, and I have to re-install squeeze. Not a big loss, since I do not have much in it. How to install this nvidia driver, specifically, how do I get switch to gcc4.3 from gcc4.3? Also, the squeeze install gave me 2.6.33-trunk-amd64, and 2.6.33-3-amd64. How do I get rid of ...trunk-amd64? Do I just delete it from grub?
I am using fedora10 in my notebook. I installed nvidia-graphics driver as follows.

For some reason after updating, somewhere my system is messed up where my 3d acceleration doesn't work. I found a workaround though, I can get it to work when I reboot, and manually select my OS at the grub2 menu by pressing enter. It doesn't work all the time this way, but most the time it does allow 3d acceleration to work almost normal. If I let the grub2 timer count down to auto select it will never be 3d accelerated, and prompts me it's going to run in low-graphics mode and I'm given an option to Restart X. Ok that's one part of it...
Now with my workaround say I got 3d acceleration to work, when I go to System > Preferences > Appearance : and for Visual Effects I select "Normal" (was on none). It will apply fine, until I reboot it gets set back to none. So I'm having to manually put everything back (graphics) every time I boot, this is a horrible bug. Then onto another aspect of this wonderful update. All my letters and numbers on the keyboard are normal, except when I use control and ALT, they don't seem to be mapped correctly because I can't use any of my Keyboard Shortcuts.
When I was 12 fedora with graphics acceleration worked well and without problems but now I installed fedora 13 dvd compatible with everything when I installed it and no problem only in go to System> Preferences> Desktop Effects I came with a message.

I initially installed Debian Lenny on my system but couldn't get sound to work so I upgraded to squeeze hoping that the newer kernel would somehow fix that. Unfortunately, the update caused the screen to flash on and off starting at the login screen - I'd get a split second with the screen on and then it would go off for a second or two. The boot screen still allows me to boot from Lenny's linux kernel, and that still works. I also had this problem when I installed ubuntu on this computer so after some searching around I remembered that adding radeon.modeset=0 as a boot option fixed this. Now the screen no longer flashes, but everything is really slow - I think that disabled graphics acceleration? After some searching around it seems that these problems are probably caused by something called KMS in newer linux kernels but I don't really know.
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas as to how I could turn on graphics acceleration again without having the screen flashing on and off? Or suggestions for making sound work? I think in the past (on ubuntu) I ended up having to enable the proprietary graphics driver, but on the other linux distros i've tried I used proprietary graphics and flash and my computer got slower and slower and started to crash, so I'd rather stick to the open source driver if possible - i don't need really need 3d acceleration. Stability is the reason I switched to debian. On Linux, is there anyway to get 3D acceleration from my Nvidia card without X? Ideally, I'd have the kernel boot, get to a console, then somehow get into a "graphics mode", where my entire monitor is just a single OpenGL screen ... and I draw stuff to it with OpenGL. Without X.
I'm running hardware already considered legacy and I was made painfully aware that those drivers, for ATI cards, are only available from Jessie repositories; yet, somehow I was able to have my system configured to run not the stock drivers the system used for installation but, allegedly, proprietary drivers.
I did notice an overall improvement on how the system displays everything on the screen but after fumbling around the system trying to install a game I had a message warning that only software acceleration was activated and not full hardware acceleration, which was what I was aiming at.
After going through a lot of guides on the web I was able to:
a) discover the system is running MESA drivers (or so I have understood)
b) install headers for my system but somehow along the way I fumbled whatever I was doing and I probably now have a lot of loose ends in the system
Being Debian (and rock solid) the system is still running smoothly but I really want to clean up after myself and correct what I can and improve where is possible.
I am installing the Nvidia proprietary module to get 3D acceleration. The system boots into gnome (fedora 11) nicely. When I go to console init 3 (shutdown X) to install the Nvidia native driver the console is all garbled. the monitor is fully polluted with random alphanumeric characters, different colors, quite pretty actually but cannot get out of it.. The fedora driver is nouveau. GPU is GeForce 8500. I get the same from a fedora dist. (2.6.30-10-105.2.23.fc11.i586) and linux distrbution (2.6.32.13)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running a three-monitor setup, two of the monitors being connected to an NVIDIA card, and the third being connected to the motherboard's onboard ATI adapter. This works, and it actually works quite well, but after installing the nvidia-current drivers (using the GNOME dialog), I am unable to get any video acceleration going. The GLX module doesn't seem to want to load, and while I'm actually quite impressed with the video performance I'm getting with the open-source drivers, I'd really like to have the OpenGL capability, as it does make things look prettier.

I should clarify - I don't care about the 3rd monitor on the ATI adapter; I'm only concerned with getting OpenGL working on the two on the NVIDIA - if that's possible, which it may not be...

I have a Packard Bell Imedia desktop with on-board ATI graphics. I also have a spare Nvidia PCI card. Is there a way I could use the Nvidia to run a second screen, if so how as the Nvidia and fglrx drivers seem to collide in a show stopping way!!I am running Kubuntu Intrepid, but have resorted to Gnome as KDE4 went spectacularly wrong on me.

I've tried using the ATI Catalyst 9.12 drivers, and they work ok with 2D/3D DECCELERATION. 3D works but it's extremely slow, maximizing a window takes 10secs, videos skip when played in fullscreen. Disabling Compiz doesn't help much, in 2D mode, windows redraw slowly.
I'm trying to install the open radeonhd drivers, and so far, it's booting into gnome, but it's barely usable. There is no 2D acceleration (log says ShadowFB only) and glxinfo reports:

I installed Suse 11.4 and have a couple of questions.
I installed the newest Nvidea driver for linux but when I look under system info it sais 3D driver: swrast (No 3D Acceleration) (7.10)) How can I turn this on?
Also under CPU info the speed switches between 800MHz, 1400MHz and the normal 2.6Ghz (x4 for the Quad Core). Is something wrong or does it shows how much the system is using current?
Lastly my pc shows the following:
