General :: Enter The Boot Prompt For Red Hat 5.3 Kick Start?

Apr 5, 2010

I have ks.cfg and file.iso burned to a DVD. Both files are at the root of the DVD. Besides that, I also created a folder and keep some drivers in the folder.

I inserted the CD and reboot the server ( which already has a red hat 5.3 that I installed before, I want to erase it using kick start ).

Howver, I just can't get into the much said "boot prompt".

Do we need to press certain hot key during certain stage of reboot?

General :: No Prompt For Root Password After Attempting To Enter Single User Mode?

Jul 13, 2011

I followed instructions to enter single user mode by adding single at the end of kernel line but after that it doesn't ask for root password but brings up the sh# prompt. Isn't that supposed to be insecure? I understand for this the grub password can be applied but even after adding "single" it should ask for root password..or it should not..??

Server :: Kick Start Inastallation In Rhel 5

Jan 18, 2010

I have problem while configuring kickstart installation in rhel 5.2 .

I have followed bellow listed steps.

i, Copied iso.img into my server

ii, # mount o loop iso.img /tmp/iso # cp -a /tmp/iso/* /tmp/iso_new/ # system-config-kickstart - - generate ks.cfg ( creating kickstart configuration file) # cp /root/ks.cf /tmp/iso_new/isolinux/ ( As suggested by red hat I have copied ks.cgf file into /isolinux/ folder.

iii) mkisofs -R -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o /tmp/new_1.iso /tmp/ iso_new # to create bootable disk

iv) Then started the system using this newly created iso image through HP ILO console and the system got booted successfully with boot prompt.

v) After executing the linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg from the boot prompt, we got a error by saying there is no CDROM deducted in your Machine and the installation got terminated .

vi) As per my understanding the ISO image is mounted as Virtual CD-ROM (/dev/scd0) in HP ILO.

Why the we are getting CD-ROM related Error ? How we can avoid this error? Is there any other set of configuration to achieve this ?

Slackware :: New 13.1 Install The System Boot To A Command Prompt And Then Run /etc/rc.d/rc.4 To Start X?

Jul 9, 2010

2nd and 3rd might be linux kernel problems but may help someone else so I included here.1st -- run level 4, /etc/rc.d/rc.4 and xdm -nodaemonJust installed 13.1 on an odd system, including building a new kernel. One thing I do is have the system boot to a command prompt and then run /etc/rc.d/rc.4 to start XBut I found that the rc.4 uses xdm -nodaemon flag and it was causing problems so I removed and all is pretty good. I still see some odd behavior with the virtual ttys sometimes.2nd -- when building a new kernel, I found I need the device-mapper butcouldn't tell if that was a linux kernel issue or something to do with lilo, I didn't want and don't need multiple disk devices like for LVM or MD so I didn't plan to have this enabled.3rd -- CONFIG_EXT4_USE_FOR_EXT23 When that kernel config option was selected and I have only an EXT4 filesystem, the filesystem was mounted as an EXT2, even though the kernel had no EXT2 feature. /etc/fstab specified EXT4 but the mount command showed EXT2. A silent problem that could leave an unpleasant surprise since EXT2 hos no journaling.4th -- I had to run lilo -C by hand in a virtual tty before finishing the install. This was what I had to do when installing 13.0 on different hardware. It seems that the lilo part of the install needs some sorting out.

Ubuntu :: Could Not Log In After Crash (no Prompt To Enter Password)

May 11, 2011

My Ubuntu desktop crashed last night after I accidentally bumped into the CPU box. Right after I bumped into it, it restarted automatically ... then it ran disk integrity check, also automatically ...

The issue is that I can NOT log into it. There is no way that I could enter my password. Though I could telnet into it using my laptop (I have set up telnetd into this desktop before).

I am trying to search for similar issues in this forum but I could not find one that is really like this.I have all 5 years of work in the hard drive.

The two images below shows the issue it had done.

This is my login screen (note: whenever I click "nd-desktop", it doesn't give me prompt for password.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

This is just the screen it gives me when I click "nd-desktop" above. Also, take note there are no usual options below that could change my preferred desktop etc.

OpenSUSE Install :: Start A Browser It Asks To Enter Root Password?

Sep 7, 2011

Whenever I start a browser, it asks me to enter my root password because of some pgp keyring issue. I set my password as standard in seahorse, but no change.

The Gnome3 interface sometimes lags very noticeably.

Packagekit constantly blocks my zypper use, and it won't shut down. Not even after I log out and log in again. I tried just removing everything related to packagekit, but that just breaks everything.

Searching for repositories is a pain and there are too many different ones and I never know which one is the latest and how these will be upgraded in the future. Zypper itself is awesome, everything else about package and repo management is not.

I can't uninstall applications properly. I remove them via zypper, and when I do a distro update they get added back in. (gnome games for example)

Whenever I install or search for anything in zypper, I get hundreds of these errors: GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: The connection is closed)..but it still finds something.

Debian Installation :: No Network-Manager - Pull Up The Terminal And Enter A Command To Start?

Sep 1, 2011

I downloaded Debian Stable last night, and everything appear to go smoothly. Today, I booted up the new OS to try it out for the first time. As I was exploring a few of the features, I decided to pull up a web browser. No internet connection.

No big deal, I thought, as I searched around for a way to connect wirelessly. I couldn't find a way to do so. I consulted one of my more Linux savvy friends, who advised me to pull up the terminal and enter a command to start the network-manager. According to the terminal, no such file currently exists on my system.

This is a bit of a conundrum for me, since I am on my university campus with no ethernet cord to attempt a direct connection. Is there any way to get the network-manager onto my computer? Also, did I mess up somewhere in the installation, or did someone not package the file with CD1 for some unknown reason?

Ubuntu Installation :: Server Won't Start Properly - Goes To Initramfs Prompt

May 31, 2010

I'm trying to install ubuntu-10.04-server-i386 in Virtualbox on Windows XP Home (for use as a Drupal development server) using the instructions here [URL]... the Ubuntu server will not start properly. Instead it goes to an initramfs prompt as follows

[code]...

Another thread suggested typing 'exit' after a while but it just repeats the same output. It seems the root disk doesn't exist. I allowed the installer to set up partitions to its own recommendation (Guided?) although I'm not entirely sure what it did - I think there are two partitions but you guys will know that. The host disk is SATA. The CPU is a dualcore but I've only enabled one CPU on the guest within Virtualbox. Also, I had to enable PAE mode as without it Virtualbox crashed every time I started the guest. PAE wasn't mentioned in the instructions mentioned above. I've tried changing the various other disk parameters in Virtualbox (without fully understanding them) but no luck. I also ran run the boot info script from a desktop LiveCD and the results are given below.

Ubuntu :: Enter 3G PIN At Every Boot?

Nov 3, 2010

I have several pc's with Lucid and Maverick many of them with onboard 3G modems. They all function excellent. On my Lenovo X301 i have installed Maverick from scratch. After install I have to enter the PIN to my 3G modem at every login or wakeup from hibernation/sleep. I have to enter this even if i have disabled the 3G radio in NetworkManager

In NetworkManager i have entered the correct information for my 3G supplier as well as the PIN for my 3G access. I have not marked automatic start to my 3G connection in NetworkManager I rarely use the 3G as i'm normally connected through WiFi so it is a bit annoying. When i had lucid installed on the same pc i didn't have this problem. How do i turn this PIN entering behavior off?

Slackware :: No Way To Enter Extra Boot Options

Mar 11, 2011

I used btrfs, but my Slackware root is really a subvolume named system and not the root of btrfs. I do a similar setup of having the OS's root in it's own filesystem on FreeBSD+ZFS.Anyways, my problem lies in mkinitrd. There's no way to enter extra boot options, as I require subvol=system to be added to mount -o ro -t $ROOTFS $ROOTDEV /mnt.in the init script of /boot/initrd.gz. I don't reboot often and it's easy to manually remount /mnt with the correct options, however, is there another way of passing boot options to mkinitrd?

I see Patrick is the author of mkinitrd, so maybe this kind of option could, or maybe should, be added? I'm sure most people wouldn't make a subvolume for the OS's root, but I've been use to it with ZFS and prefer it for some reason.
