Feb 21, 2011I have used for a long time Filezilla FTP Server on a windows server, for multiple users in my company around the country.Lately the windows box died and I said let's try ubuntu server 9.10. I configured to my best as a Samba file server and from a speed point of view it works even faster than the Winbox.Now getting to FTP setup, I had the following problem when setting vsftpd.How can I enable more directories for the user, each with its own rights. By example, in Filezilla I had two folders for each user: one was a specific folder in which he could also write, and the other was read-only. They were setup with aliases, so that when user login, he sees one continous list of folders.I tried with symlink, but couldn't do it. Also I searched through the man page but also did not find something specific for this task I would appreciate any help you guys could give me in order to solve this issue, using the best practice for vsftpd. Also note that I am open to other FTP servers as well.

Dec 18, 2010I am trying to use cron and FTP to backup files regularly from my main server to a backup server. The backup server was a "bare bones" setup with no control panel or even FTP. It is running CentOS 5.3.
I installed VSFTPD which appears to be running OK and I can connect via FTP from my other server, but when I try to run my backup script (it uses mput) I get a "553 Could not create file" error.
Some relevant info:
The user I have created for this is "ftz" with home directory /home/ftz/
Running ls -l shows: drwxrwxrwx 3 ftz ftz 4096 Dec 18 07:46 ftz
so permissions and directory ownership don't seem to be the problem.
vsftpd.conf was left in default form:

Okay samba server is configured on Ubuntu Linux machine but how to add this to the existing domain where windows machines are ? Do i have to really add this Samba server to windows Active directory or adding it in the network will do? Please also help me in configuring samba server security and the ease of user access of the data on the server.

Feb 23, 2010I currently have 4 Linux Servers installed in a test lab that I have built for my job. I am in the process of trying to get FTP to work (vsftpd is installed). I don't need an FTP GUI or anything, I can use terminal (and I don't have an internet connection, so I probably can't get one anyway). I bring up the terminal and I type FTP and I am presented with a few problems:
1. If I try to FTP to one of the other Linux Servers on the network, I get "No route to host" error.
2. If I try to FTP to the Server I am sitting on, then I am able to successfully connect, obviously. But when I do an "ls," I don't see any available files.
I am assuming this is because I have not yet set up a folder for it (i.e. Windows uses "ftproot" folder). I am running Ubuntu Gnome 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope for a GUI, and I am running Ubuntu Server underneath (Yes I need a GUI for what I am using the server for).

Nov 11, 2009I've been tasked with setting up a RHEL FTP server to mirror one we currently have. From what I've read, I need to install and configure VSFTPD and then configure IPTables. From what I've been able to come up with, I need to follow the steps in this article to install and setup VSFTPD. Is this a good complete article to follow you think?Also, how do I copy the iptables config from that server to my new one? I think that iptables on our current server only allows certain IPs or blocks certain IPs (not sure which), so I need to have it do that on my new server as well

I have tried "sudo systemctl unmask samba.service". I receive no errors however it does not actually unmask. I can't find anything online regarding a service stuck on masked status.

I installed vsftpd server in one of my servers using "yum install vsftpd" command. NFS server is running in the other server and mounted as "/data" in this FTP server. root in FTP server has also root authority in NFS server. All the files and sub-folders under "/data" in FTP server have 755 or 766 mode. Even I modified vsftpd setting to allow root login.
When I login as root to FTP server with FileZilla client, I can see all the file list in root home directory and move to /data directory. I can download any file in a local HDD but I can not download any file in /data directory.

From the help desk they told me that i need to configure a file to fit with my system.
