I want to configure file printer (print to file) on my rhel-5 machine in such a way that if users fire print command from windows xp it should create an individual computer wise txt file on my linux machine. File name should be different for each printer.

i have custom programs written in Basis pro5. Standard output to a pdf virtual printer works fine. Using pdftk to overlay on to a form is hit or miss.... There are products out there like Unform that are just too expensive for my company. i have purchased another product from a company that prints the forms to the laser perfectly but i am incapable of capturing them and saving them as pdf's for archiving/emailing/faxing and i don't much care for this company.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy HP Deskjet D-2660 will not print. I can print to file but not the printer. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and have no other problems. I have installed hpip and hpijs form HP and cups was made available via and upgrade. I have a lot of data from var/log/cups/error_log but don't know what it is supposed to say.
I can print to file and everything else I check seems to say that all is right. Is there any glaring faults that I should look for?? As I stated on the other post I get a message that the print job has been sent to the printer and then another message stating that the print job has completed. In system/administration/printing, the printer shows up properly and has a green check mark on it. Connected to localhost shows at the bottom of the little window. Under /printer it shows shared and enabled Then under printer/properties, it shows as the HP Deskjet D2600 series the location is given as john-desktop It defines the Device URI: hp:/usb/Deskjet_D2600_series?serial=CN9ANDF0ZT05C9 shows the Make and Model HP Deskjet d2600 Series hpijs,.. printer state: idle
Across the bottom it theoretically allows you to print a test page or clean the print heads. (won't print) On the printing-local host small page that opens under system/administration/printing there is no group under that heading only new group or new group from selection. I never named a group since I am the only user.
I have shut the printer down and disconnected the USB and rebooted. Then connect the power and plug in the USB cable I get all the same answers nothing appears to change. Here is some of the var/log/cups/error_log file. It does this over and over every minute same thing. The print que is empty from both administration and applications.

I have Windows XP running on Virtualbox and I want to be able to generate PDF files using this printer but there appear to be no Printers configured.
We are using lpr as a print server. What I want to do is, configure the lpd print server so that before it accepts any print job for some printer, it checks if the printer is available or not. If the printer is available, then only it is supposed to accept print jobs...if not, it should not accept the print jobs at all. How do I accomplish this feature?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a print server in Fedora 13. I've made it using CUPS and when I send something to print from a Windows PC it goes ok. My main concern is to know where is the spool file stored when a file is sent to print. I've seen in many forums that it is stored in /var/spools/cups. What I only see here is a file name c000XXX with some information about the printing job. I'm using hold print for this printer and before printing out anything I can't find the spool. I've tried cups-pdf and it stores a pdf file in a route but this is not enough for me. I need to know where the spool data is stored in order to know from who is the job being send.

I have a spare machine that has windows XP installed on it and pretty much sits there doing nothing. Both myself and my GF have laptops that we use as our primary machines so I figured I'd just use the spare machine as a file and print share.
Now, I know that I can simply keep XP on there and enable what I need, but Im wondering if I might be better of wiping the thing and installing a linux based os instead.
There's no real reason for me to do this (except that I want to play with linux) so I guess my questions are, is there any point in me doing this? If so what can I do with this machine other than filesharing and what do you reccomend as a fairly light linux installation? Also what else could I use this spare machine for?

So I appended this output into a file using shellscript. But now my requirement is changed. The part of output like Fund name and 1234 should be in bold. How can I do this using shell script.
I like to redirect the print output to a file for later analysis and I was able to do this in an old Fedora 9 but with the new installation of Fedora 13 or Ubuntu 10 it is not working! I always get an error when selecting a directory/filename like file:///tmp/output.prn.
How can I fix this problem?
I have installed centos 5 and can print small to medium lpr files using cups fine (1 to 20 pages), but when i tried to print a file of 95 pages the printer just stops, I have to power off the printer and turn it back on and it will start printing again. It looks like some data is lost in this process. It may print 20 pages and stop. When restarted it may print 20 or 40 or complete the report.I can print to the devicectly and it works fine. It is only when the large print jobs are run through the spooler.I have tried on different printers and the same results, that's what makes me think it is a spooler problem.

From the help desk they told me that i need to configure a file to fit with my system. I just changed operation system to CYGWIN_NT-6.0 (instead of the command uname -s ; set opsys=$1. this was the only way i had an idea to do it, so i tell the programm that my sytem is a 6.0 but it isn't

I've tried to copy different tutorials so that I can put on paper everything prints except the important things(commands & script examples. Is this some kind of copy-right? If not issue with copy-right is it possible to have complete copy. Also I haven't seen in PDF form, I just need to copy so I can reference without having to be on computer.
