View 37 Replies View RelatedI started to work on building a ftp by vsftpd in our lab (that's only for our lab members). I am going to setup some the virtual users for each of the member. We have a CentOS5 (without upgrade after the fresh installation). I try several ways to setup the vsftpd for virtual users. 1) with db4 2) with mysql 3) without database and use htpasswd. But all fails. Actually, I don't want to use database, so I am going to find out the reason of failure on 'htpasswd' method
My vsftpd is installed in /etc/vsftpd (for only using ftp account, it is no problem to login).
1) I setup an account called vftpuser and build the corresponding home (/home/vftpuser), and then I setup another account call usera and also create a directory within /home/vftpuser.
2) I use htpasswd to add passwd to usera and store the passwd in /etc/vsftpd/passwd.
3) I added the name of usera to /etc/vsftpd/user_list
4) I create a directory /etc/vsftpd/user to store a unique conf for each user (for usera, the conf named usera) which contains the local root for users, which is

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have used for a long time Filezilla FTP Server on a windows server, for multiple users in my company around the country.Lately the windows box died and I said let's try ubuntu server 9.10. I configured to my best as a Samba file server and from a speed point of view it works even faster than the Winbox. Now getting to FTP setup, I had the following problem when setting vsftpd. How can I enable more directories for the user, each with its own rights. By example, in Filezilla I had two folders for each user: one was a specific folder in which he could also write, and the other was read-only. They were setup with aliases, so that when user login, he sees one continous list of folders.I tried with symlink, but couldn't do it. Also I searched through the man page but also did not find something specific for this task I would appreciate any help you guys could give me in order to solve this issue, using the best practice for vsftpd. Also note that I am open to other FTP servers as well.

I just installed Wordpress and i am delighted of it, nice peace of software. Even so I have to get running a FTP or SFTP server on my localhost machine. I did installed in my Ubuntu 10.10 the VSFTPD server and generated a RSA certificate file (vsftpd.pem). Strange it is that there is no vsftpd folder under /etc, instead vsftpd.conf file is directly into /etc ... so I have generated also my .pem file into /etc. Anyway I have a lot of trouble adding new users to access this server. I use Filezilla as SFTP client. Please let me know if you encountered such an issue, and what is the solution for it. Downwards is my vsftpd.conf file.
# Example config file /etc/vsftpd.conf

# The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file
# loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable.

I'm using Slackware 13.0 on my server and am going to be employing a file-sharing service for a client. I was able to enable a quota, but my problem now is keeping the user inside their home directory. I've searched around and found an old thread on here (from 2003) that gave me some ideas, but it still isn't working. Should I be running vsftpd standalone or leave it on the inetd? If I set the shell to /sbin/nologin or /bin/false, the user can't log in through FTP, even.

I am attempting to configure vsftpd to allow anonymous users to PUT files into a shared incoming directory. This would be like a dropbox for my customers. Ideally, the incoming directory's contents would not be viewable by the users.
I believe that refused connection is due to the PAM configuration for vsftpd.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to configure an access to folder
/fileserver
for two services : Samba and VSFTPD
How to do it ? How to create folder rights that samba and ftp user will have an access (read/write/delete) to all directories in /fileserver.

I have a quick questions about MD5-sums in the /etc/shadow file:

I installed vsftpd server in one of my servers using "yum install vsftpd" command. NFS server is running in the other server and mounted as "/data" in this FTP server. root in FTP server has also root authority in NFS server. All the files and sub-folders under "/data" in FTP server have 755 or 766 mode. Even I modified vsftpd setting to allow root login.
When I login as root to FTP server with FileZilla client, I can see all the file list in root home directory and move to /data directory. I can download any file in a local HDD but I can not download any file in /data directory.
How to allow a user to login without entering a password?
If my question sounds wierd then check out m-net at www.arbornet.org/m-net.php and see how it works.
Telnet / SSH to m-net.arbornet.org and type in newuser and it won't prompt for a password.

But while i am trying this through a windows machine by ftp://192.168.5.20 it gets directly accessed without prompting me any User and Password.
I need to have FTP environment same like windows. where it must prompt me user name and password, and i must be able to upload and download data from my windows clients.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy goal is this: Allow a user to connect to a server via SSH with any login name or password without checking to see if that account exists on that server. Their account would be captured by a universal account say, 'generic_user', and then they would be directed to one of my python scripts with the username and password they supplied for initial login. At this point my script would capture their SSHD process ID and allow/deny their existence based upon a MySQL/Subscription check.
The part I'm having trouble with is with PAM and allowing the user to login with any credentials and be successfully authenticated under the generic account. Beyond that, everything is great.
I have configured LDAP Server on RHEL 5.2 successfully and client can login to the server. But I do no how a client can change its LDAP password on his client machine.

I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible. My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet. The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).
I setup openldap and samba on 9.10. The ubuntu desktop client gets authenticated successfully with the server.
But when I do a passwd on the client, only the ldap passwd is getting changed but not in the samba and the unix user account.

I have got a running mail server on CentOS5.4 Final using Zimbra free edition. . Assume that domain is organization.com.local And it is running fine with users created and bugzilla running on the same machine can send mails using this server. But it can obviously send messages to the internal users. There is this option to configure it to use external mail server to send mails outside the network but my external smtp server needs an authentication. Is it possible to configure it this way to use my external server to send mails from internal domain to say gmail?
