CentOS 5 Server :: Vsftpd Using Virtual Users And Encrypting It?
Aug 10, 2011Using THIS I was able to get virtual users working via standard ftp. After wrestling with selinux and such I'm able to log in as a user defined in the virtual-users file.
At the bottom is the vsftpd.conf. I can start the server no problem. I've been making edits to it so I'm not sure what's right/wrong at this point in it. I have a snapshot I keep reverting to where ftp works with virtual users and then I start monkeying with it again.
First problem I have is I'm not exactly sure how to test it. If I use WinSCP, I try SFTP and in the vsftpd.log I see:

I have set chmod to 733 and chown to another user on the upload folder so that the different clients do not see each others files,
but that also causes the client to not see their own files after they are uploaded or not being able to resume broken uploads.
I would like the different user log in with their own username and password but all upload to the same directory and not see each others files, but just their own. Is this possible? Or does anyone have a tip how to achieve something similar?

Jan 18, 2009Vsftpd virtual users, when a user connects via of ftp they can view all files in the file system. Have a virtual web server and vsftpd working, each user's username is their domain name. FTP works, but not the way I wish for it to work. I only wish for a user to be able to view the files under their username, not the entire Fedora file system and limit changes to files ONLY under their domain name.

Jul 3, 2009I'm testing a Debian Lenny virtual machine to simulate my ideal setup for FTP server (with vsftpd): I want all internal users (corporation users with Active Directory accounts) to ftp into the same directory (i.e. /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN/) and external users (customers) to ftp into their home directories (created manually on request).
I added user_config_dir=/etc/vsftpd_user_conf option in /etc/vsftpd.conf file and I've created /etc/vsftpd_user_conf/domain-user1 with local_root=/var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN
I have setup vsftp so I can ftp with every external and internal user chrooted and is working properly. AD validation for internal users and "normal" validation (via /etc/passwd) for external users work perfect.
I can FTP this server into /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN with any AD user with its home directory created (i.e. /home/AD-DOMAIN/domain-user1/) but if I try to ftp with any AD user without its home directory created I get the error "500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/home/AD-DOMAIN/domain-user2"
I have found some references (http://wiki.flexion.org/FtpServer.html and http://howto.gumph.org/content/setup...ies-in-vsftpd/) about vsftp PAM authentication so I would supposedly get rid of the error message and the user would log into /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN without problems, but I can't figure out how to setup my FTP server.

I configured to my best as a Samba file server and from a speed point of view it works even faster than the Winbox.Now getting to FTP setup, I had the following problem when setting vsftpd.How can I enable more directories for the user, each with its own rights. By example, in Filezilla I had two folders for each user: one was a specific folder in which he could also write, and the other was read-only. They were setup with aliases, so that when user login, he sees one continous list of folders.I tried with symlink, but couldn't do it. Also I searched through the man page but also did not find something specific for this task I would appreciate any help you guys could give me in order to solve this issue, using the best practice for vsftpd. Also note that I am open to other FTP servers as well.

I've installed and configured OpenLdap on a virtual machine with ip 192.168.39.134. I've added 2 users via LAM. In the ou WikiUsers and the domain is wiki.local.
I've then created another host with ip 192.168.39.133 with mediawiki installed on it. Then I added the extension LDAPAuthenthication. In the LdapAuthentication file I added this code (only the last paragraph is mine, I added the others to show it's location in the script):

This is indeed all just to test and get to know how LDAP works. That's why it's all virtual in VMWare. I did not really configure anything on the LDAP, i just installed it and chose a domain (wiki.local).

Mar 3, 2011I have Apache up and running and have a few virtual sites enabled. All these sites belong to the same user and group and the directory root for each site is in /home/{same-user}/www/{site-name}/htdocs/
I use Samba to connect from Windows to these directories and by default, files and directories are saved as the {same-user} and {same-group}. My question is, would it cause a problem if I changed the user and group in the virtual server directives in /etc/apache2/sites-available/site.conf files, giving apache permission to write to these files and directories. In the past I have changed the user and group to www-data (the default) but this seems inefficient an cumbersome compared to what I intend to do.
I use the server mostly for development, although at times I have a small site or two available to the public. Before I do this I want to be sure I'm not leaving a gaping security hole by changing these things. If this is all wrong, what is the standard way of running virtual hosts from apache and what is the standard document root for virtual sites?

When they create folder they cant make another in than folder, or for example they cant see files they upload in that directory...That write permision i try to change in their config file, with every combination of local_umask and file_open mode values. How can I handle that. I want that virtual user who creates directory (in their root directory) have all privilages to that folder and all content in that folder.

Now this installs the guest OS virtual harddrives to a folder in my home directory. How do I get other users on the same host machine access to those virtual machines within VB? Currently logging in as another user and going to Applications/Accessories/VirtualBox OSE ... the list of guest machines is empty save of course on my login.
