General :: Set Default Permissions For New Folders On Mounted Samba Volume?

Feb 1, 2010

I have mounted samba volume and I need to have write permissions for every new folder that's being created (currently, by default, on every newly created folder i have only read and execute permissions).I tried changing umask, but with no effect on mounted folder, umask changed only for local filesystem. I tried mounting with umask option, but with no effect again.I'm using ArchLinux on this machine, and I installed samba using default package manager (pacman).

Debian :: No Write Access To Mounted Volume (over Samba)

Aug 10, 2011

I have recently installed Debian on my NAS server. I have also configured Samba for sharing the home directory of a nas user i.e. /home/nas To this directory I have read/write from a windows machine using the nas user credentials.

When I mount my RAID partition /dev/md0p1 to the /home/nas directory, I then realize that all content in this directory (files and subfolders) is only owned by the root user. When trying to access from the windows machine the /home/nas directory, I do not have any write access, only read. I have tried both the nas and the root user credentials.

I have also attempted the change the ownership of the mounted RAID partition to the nas user with the -R recursive option, but I get for the internal files/subfolders an error "operation not supported".

How can I overcome this problem?

- Is there something not done properly in the /dev/md0 array definition (i.e. ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=bddf8b69:c97967b5:cb104784:7fef7cc3 )?

- Is there something not done properly in the /dev/md0p1 mounting (i.e. mount /dev/md0p1 /home/nas)?

- Should I do any extra configuration before the mounting etc?

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Sharing Of A Mounted Remote Volume?

Apr 21, 2011

I'm running 10.04 server on a Mac G5 with 2 network interfaces, one pointing to my network (192.168.0.x) and the other to a local partner network (192.9.100.x) with which we share a network volume to give/take PDF files. My client environment is MAC OS X (from 10.4 to 10.6) and until now only one client (with 2 nics) was connected to that volume: we don't have layer3 switches to do static routes over the two networks, so I decided to use my Ubuntu Server Mac to do this (it's also my new syslog server...).

Nics are configured correctly, and the local share (192.168.0.x) is well seen by everybody. But, when I mount the remote volume (192.9.100.x) to THAT shared folder, nobody is able to connect to the samba share (that now lists the remote volume directory...). The MAC OS X tells "unable to unmount the volume". IP forwarding is also activated on /etc/sysctl.confHere is a part of my smb.conf file

Ubuntu :: Change Default Permissions Of Removable Media Mounted Via Nautilus?

May 2, 2010

behavior in 9.04:plugged in a disk, mounted it and it as readable to the world.this is intended because it is shared via samba.behavior in 10.04:the disks have 700, meaning, they are not readable by samba.this is a problem.this is the best solution I've found so far:http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-u.../msg10951.htmlexcept, that the mentioned means to fix this are gone.(gconf-editor -> ..., storage and preferences -> removable media)after 3 hours of googleing and reading I'm rather upset about this bug.so please, if you are thinking of suggesting fixed entries in the fstab or anything else that will not work with every media that is plugged into this box, just close this tab.

Ubuntu Servers :: Default File Permissions For System Folders

May 5, 2010

I had a major raid event recently which caused my Ubuntu 9.04 server to recover part of its file journal on the system partition. This caused some of the file permissions to go all funny and I now need to change them manually.

What the file permissions should for the following folders:
/etc/
/home/
/lost+found/
/mnt/
/root/
/sbin/
/srv/
/tmp/

The server is running and I fixed the some of the ownership issues already. I use a basic LAMP setup with samba, and proftp.

Debian :: Default Ownership Of Folders And Files - Should Own By A User Without Root Permissions

Feb 12, 2011

Being new to Linux, i've just about got used to the Debian setup procedure now, but had a quick question on the default ownership of files and folders. On my default Debian installation, almost all the folders and files are owned by root:root. Is this the correct advised configuration or should the folders and files be owned by a user without root permissions - eg user:user?

Ubuntu :: SAMBA Default File Create Permissions?

Files saved on our ubuntu server via samba server are all being created/saved as read only (-rwxr--r--). The users are MAC Users who are connecting via finder.I have taken 2 steps:First I added the lines "umask 0000" to the .bashrc files in the users' home directories.Second, I have modified the /etc/samba/smb.conf file such that I set "create mask = 0000" and also "directory mask = 0000" but the files are still being created as "-rwxr--r--".

Ubuntu :: Samba - Get The Correct Default Permissions When Users Create Directories Through Windows?

Apr 1, 2010

I've got a small issue that when a Windows user creates a new folder through Windows Explorer (from the menu or by right clicking) the new folder is only accessible to that particular user. Example: user SABKAR (member of the HR group) creates a new folder called MarcTestMenu in a shared Samba directory through Windows Explorer:

[Code]....

At this point user MORAMY cannot copy a file or open the directory MarcTestMenu. MORAMY gets a 'not accessible' error message in Windows. If I su to the Samba box and issue this command:

how I can get the correct default permissions when users create directories through Windows?

Following are extracts of the /etc/samba/smb.conf file :

Even with the above entries, sometimes there are files and directories created by the windows clients having permission

Probably my lack of understanding in ACLS.

General :: Setting Up Group Permissions For A Mounted Share?

Jul 6, 2010

Sorry if this is the wrong section for this type of question. Anyway, I have two servers running Ubuntu 10.04. Server A has an NFS share that is mounted on server B, and the former has this share set up with specific permissions for a group called netusers. This group basically grants its users read/write permissions, and blocking all of files from anyone who's not part of the group. My question is this: how can I set up the permissions on server B, such that if I was to add a new user on server B, he would have read/write access to the share? I tried adding a counterpart group called netusers with the same permissions on B, but that didn't work.

General :: Some Folders Inherit Its Permissions Some Don't

Jan 7, 2010

I've a problem on one of my servers with file permissions. Quite simply , when I run chmod 777 -R against a folder , it seems to be inconsistent on making that particular folders permissions trickle down to the folders beneath. Some folders inherit its permissions , some don't. For example...

/projects
Contains
/Jan /Feb /Mar /April

They all in turn contain folders marked /1 , /2 , /3 , up to /10, these folders all contain more folders , running to a depth of 6.

However , depending on what folder our users save their files into , some are saved with rwxrwxr-- , some get saved with rwxrwxrx. Forgive my lack of understanding but if I run the above command against the top level folder will this not make every folder and file below it inherit its permissions of 777 ?? Or is there something else that I need to do?

General :: Resolving Symlinks Mounted Via Samba On Windows?

Feb 11, 2010

I have a samba mount in Windows, mounted from a local Linux devbox. The projects on this mount contain a lot of symlinked directories. They all work fine and look like normal directories to Windows. What I'd like to do is figure out for a given file what its real UNIX path is.The context is: in my editor I have a script that runs the Perforce open command, to which I pass the file location.p4.exe edit FILE_LOCATION

However, perforce will not understand this FILE_LOCATION, if on the Linux side part of the path is a symlink. It needs to know the real path. What I need is something along the lines of the Linux readlink command, which resolves symlinks in paths.

I just recently built a new linux server Redhat Enterprise Linux 6 and installed Samba version 3.5.4-68.el6.I copied a configuration file from an old Linux Server (Redhat Enterprise Linux 3.0AS) with a properly running Samba version 3.07131 . To make sure that everything will be ok, I created the same group and added the users on that group and created the same directories with the file name and attributes as that of the old server. Evrything seems fine as I can see all the shared folders on the windows XP and windows 7 Machines until I tried to write something on those folder. I keep getting the message that the action is denied and I need permission to perform that action. I do not know what to do next, hence this post.Below is the copy of my configuration file.

General :: Samba File Permissions For Multiple Groups In The Same General Path?

Nov 4, 2009

I'm using my Linux (SLES 10) server as a File Server at this point. I need to set File Permissions to nested folders differently to different groups. For example:

homesharedengineering* should be read only for groupA
homesharedengineeringadmin should be read & write for groupB Plus read only for groupA
homesharedengineeringautocad should be read & write for groupC Plus read only for groupA

I've been using Webmin and Putty to set permissions but Putty only allows me the Default Group, it won't allow me to set several groups on the same directory. Webmin seems to allow me to add multiple groups (Webmin --> Others --> File Manager --> Info & ACL tab will provide extended abilities) but when I add multiple groups, they don't seem to take effect? I'm wondering if my setup at the 'Share' level or at the hierarchy of my folder structure (unix based) needs to be set specifically?

General :: Cannot Change File Permissions On A Mounted File System

Apr 6, 2010

I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

Code:

/dev/sda3 /windows ntfs-3g defaults,nosuid,nodev,umask=000 1 0

Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.
