Following a re-install of Ubuntu 9.04 I now find that I am now unable to access some of the Windows folders on the "C:/> Drive" as I did before the re-install was done.
Using the access from "Places" only some of the folders are listed. I have also been trying to re-configure "Wine" to run one or two of the applications in Windows. However, I was able to configure one such application to run but from the External HDD, because I had a backup copy of the ".exe" file. I transferred this file to the Internal HDD and it now runs satisfactory. The other applications are inaccessible because of this "Access" shortcoming. Strangely, I somehow was able to get to the "Start Menu" in Windows listing all the applications' shortcut links, but sadly not the Programs Folder with the ".exe" files in Windows.
I would appreciate any help and/or advice of how I can overcome this problem to enable me to access all Folders in Windows XP.
I can ssh to the server but it wont allow me edit files, even though I have basic text editors like gedit and notepad installed on my windows computer. Anyone have an idea what the problem is? (I get an error message like this-(gedit:23978): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display

I have a virtual machine with SUSE Linux Entperise 10 SP2 (I586) installed. However, the default setting is using command line based interface.
Is it possible to change it to be GNOME or KDE based interface ?
I have a computer running Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit with Gnome and another computer running Windows 7 64-bit. How can I share folders between these? I can use Samba to view my Windows shares, if I specify the IP address by going to the "Connect to Server..." option in the Places menu. Going to "Network" in Nautilus and trying to open "Windows Network" fails because it could not retrieve the share list from the server.
MY question, though, is how can I set up Samba (or some other software) such that my Windows box will be able to see my shared folders? And also, what is the difference between Samba and Samba4 (because both are in the repositories).

I set up an apache webserver on a redhat enterprise server 6 last week. It works fine on the localhost. However, the webpage can't be accessed from the other computer. I didn't modify anything related to 'allow,deny' in httpd.conf. The only thing I've done is I added a rule in iptables to approve the access from a computer with a specific IP address. Since I am quite new to iptables, I don't know if there is anything wrong with my setting.
Even I stop iptables, the problem is still there. I don't know if my setting of iptables is correct. Or, there is anything else that I should do?
I have a bunch of files on a Ubuntu box, which have various characters in their filenames that Windows doesn't accept (mostly ":" and "*", but possibly others).What's the simplest way to get these all renamed and moved to a Windows machine? It's OK to replace these characters with something like "[colon]" and "[asterisk]".

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy company runs a Windows server. I can connect remotely via a very slow desktop emulator program in VirtualBox or I can just VPN and access whatever files I need. #2 is the preferred option.
So far I have officially setup the VPN and everything. It logs in. It gives me the little lock symbol above the Network Manger icon. I'm connected!
But...
How do I actually access the darn files available via the VPN? We keep most files on a single server for the company. Internally, it looks something like "//Bob/Folder/". At the office I have the shortcut set to the "folder" portion of the above since that's where things are located.
I'm not seeing anything related to the VPN in Nautilus, under Network... squat. I've tried several methods of using the "Places > Connect to Server" function while setting it to "Windows Share" as well. Honestly, I'm unsure if this is appropriate nor what to put in the fields (Server, Share, Folder, User Name, Domain Name) if this is the right place to be.

However if i create those shortcuts and restart computer the shortcuts are no longer valid.

Using a computer in a Internet point a downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 Live and now I'm running it in my computer. I would like to install Ubuntu definitely on my computer but before I would like to find all my old file from Windows 7. In Places/Computer has only the File System and nothing else. In System/Administration/Disk Utility I can see my 320 GB hard Disk (ATA Samsung HM3200II) but I can't do anything in that. Currently I am using rsync+cygwin, but backup is pretty slow (without shadow copy) and I hate console window appearing every day on my screen when I login.
So I am looking for something like Windows Backup but with support for SFTP. Combination of tools will work too.
I am trying to setup vpn to access folders and files from my school. VPN is connected now through networkmanager, but I don't know how to actually gain access to the folders on the school server.
Is it through nautilus? Or the "Connect to Server"? The school provides addresses that begins with \.. something, and I have tried typing it in to nautilus and the "Connect to Server" but it fails to connect.
I have googled this but all I find is how to connect to vpn manually or through networkmanager, and not how I then can access the folders on the server.
1- I've set up 3 virtual users,one of them is a system one (with a different password) and writes on his own home folder. With this one I haven't found any problems yet, but with the other 2 users I can't access files/folders created by them. It's a permissions problem for sure, but I'm not sure how to correct it.With these users I can upload files, create files and create folders. The problem is I can't access what I create (I can't enter a folder I created but it is there and I can upload files into it).
2- Whenever I turn on ssl_enable=YES I can't access the server (even from the server itself when I connect to localhost, It's a regular Ubuntu installation).Here's the config file for the users:

Install syslog server on windows machine and let windows send log files to linux, read those files Remotely access log files with wmi implementation for linux.
Does anyone know about limitations for those two approaches before I dive into implementation?

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi on an ACER Aspire 5000 XP laptop. Everything runs ok and I can access my Windows folders from Ubuntu through the host directory but only as Read Only. I have checked to make sure that the Windows folder I want to access (My Documents) is not designated as Read Only in Windows.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just downloaded a computer game which I have never done before even when I had windows and my Ubuntu ( Linux ) used "Transmission" to download it. It downloaded to my desktop and now I have a folder with two files in it on my desktop that when I open say "Write to Disk" and gives me the different options. But I read in the comments on the game I downloaded that I can access ISO and other CD-image files using a program called Daemon Tools which is a windows program used as a virtual CD-Rom Drive. How can I do something like this with Linux?
