General :: Won't Load OS - Can I Boot System Onto My Computer

My computer(win xp) crashed. When I turn it on I get the flickering line. If I press F2 while the BIOS is loading I can access the BIOS setup, but no operating system will load. I am not very familiar with BIOS. I put a cd in the cd drive that contained the latest download of Ubuntu and told it to reboot. Nothing happened. Setup says my CD-drive is set to a secondary drive. I looked in the CD files and I saw the windows installer (wubi). Is there a way I can boot linux?
My computer was built by a small, local business. This past spring, I wiped the computer and reinstalled Windows 7 Pro from a 64 disk. It has worked well. I wanted to play with Ubuntu, so I set up a dual-boot. When I first installed Ubuntu last week, I had issues with Java. After countless failures from Google, I installed a new Ubuntu partition without deleting the old one. The other day, I got curious and wanted to try Mint. This went on yet another partition. Yesterday I wanted to organize this out better, so I formatted the Mint partition and it's swap. The computer functioned just fine until I tried to reboot. It starts out with normal BIOS(?) stuff, "Loading Operating System..." for a bit... and then breaks. It says something about not being able to find device, shows a UUID, then goes into grub rescue.
I spent around an hour or so Googling about this and have come up with nothing. Internet tells me to do this, I do, nothing happens. Internet tells me to do that, the file does not exist, nothing happens. I was Googling via my mom's laptop, and I am currently posting this from Firefox on the LiveCD (demo). I still have my Windows 7 install disk, although finding it is a different story.
How do I fix my booting issue, preferably without losing any data from my second Ubuntu install (I do not care about the first one - on sdb5?) or Windows 7.
I just added a 3rd hard drive, but now when I boot my computer grub doesn't load at all, it just boots to Windows. I've tried holding down Shift, and I've tried holding down ESC but it didn't work. I believe I have grub2.
I am unable to load Ubuntu onto computer as dual boot or inside windows. Thus scanned the CD and found it has 23 errors.Are these files suppose to be on the CD?casper, .disk, install, install, isolinux, pics, pool, pressed, autorun, md5sum.
I burned about 5 different CDs and could not load Ubuntu onto my computer. I would get error messages. I then took the CD and tried it on my wife's computer. Instant success. My present computer has Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. The optical drive is relatively new and has been used rarely.
I'm trying to install OpenSUSE 11.4 (64bit with the server options included) on my Mac (Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz with 2 GB memory). So I have sda2 the OSX, sda1 swap, sda3 is the bootcamp (windows), sda4 (ext4) and sda5(ext5). I installed rEFIt 0.14 first, then I reboot with DVD on. The installation setup resized the Windows partition from Bootcamp, and create 3 other partitions (the sda1,4 and 5). At the installation I choos MBR enable and "/" as home enable.
At the end of the installation I have the error about MBR, that can't mount, or create the mount point? I'll double check the exact message. Anyway, when I try to load OpenSUSE, is not working: can not load the system. I tried to find on the installation menu a repair (I thought that I can find an utility to fix the MBR). I don't want to choose other distribution, because I used SuSE before, and I really like it, and of course this way I can learn more about troubleshooting a Linux installation on different environment
I'm wondering where the services order is read from during boot. For some reason the system trys to mount my NFS files BEFORE it starts networking. This results in log delays during the boot process.
I have upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 but now can't boot into win vista, ubuntu and vista are on grub but vista will not load, I have tried sudo upgrade-grub which seemed to work but had no effect on loading windows. I did think of using win dvd to fixmbr but only as last resort, I entered the commands suggested by nitstorm and got "command not found". Followed link to source forge.net and test disk, followed the instructions to install and run test disk which repaired the boot sector in the vista partition, I can now choose to boot into win or ubuntu.
I just installed CentOS 5.5 on my machine and the installation appeared to complete successfully (it said it was successful). When I rebooted and tried to get into my new CentOS, my system completely locked up during the startup. According to the progress bar, it got stuck on the first-run configuration. I have not yet been able to boot into the OS. I am attempting to create a dual-boot system. I already have Windows XP installed on a separate hard drive. The GRUB loader works fine and I can choose either OS to boot into, it's just the CentOS won't finish booting. Windows is completely unaffected.Since I'm assuming the problem stems from the installation, I'll list the steps I followed.
1. Obtained the .iso image from a network drive at work (I am installing on my work machine). The image is dated May 17, 2010.
2. Burned the image to a DVD.
3. Booted from the DVD and chose to install using the graphical interface.
4. Checked the DVD. The installer verified that CentOS could be installed from it.
5. Picked my installation and keyboard languages.
6. Chose to create a custom layout for my partitions. On my second hard drive, I created the following partitions:
- Swap (8196MB, twice my system RAM) - ext3 (100MB, mounted to /boot) - ext3 (remaining drive space, mounted to /)
7. Picked my timezone (did not use UTC since Windows will handle setting the system time)
8. Set my root password. You don't get to know ;)
9. Did not choose to install any additional packages besides the KDE desktop. I wasn't sure what I'd need so I checked the option to customize later.
10. The installation than started and 15 minutes later, it told me it had succeeded and to remove the DVD and reboot.
11. Upon rebooting, I let the GRUB loader boot into CentOS (side note, I'd prefer if Windows was the default OS but that's something I should be able to Google on my own).
12. The startup looks like it's going fine until it gets to the first-run configuration, at which point the entire system locks up and requires a hard reboot. I've tried several times since and it always locks up at the same point.
I've been using Ubuntu Netbook edition on my Asus eee pc 1005HA, dual-booting with Windows 7.Things have been fine with it for a month or two. However, I've now run into some trouble with Grub2 and the MBR, and I cannot get my computer to boot into ANY operating system. Right now I'm booting from the Ubuntu installation CD to "try Ubuntu" -- it's the only way I can use my computer at all.
I have looked through the forums and googled, and already tried several methods of fixing Grub2, none of which have worked so far. Here's the situation: I wanted to disable / uninstall Grub2, so that the computer would boot as normal into Windows 7, to fix some problems and then reinstall Grub2 later. To do this I just went to the Windows System Repair environment, opened the command prompt, and entered the two commands "bootrec /fixmbr" and "bootrec /fixboot" with the understanding that this would reset the Windows control of booting, and remove Grub2's control. The result was that my computer cannot boot properly at all. No Windows and no Grub2.
So far I've tried to fix this by using the Super Grub Disk to try to use the auto-repair feature, which failed. I've also tried in various ways to reinstall / repair / update Grub by using the Terminal in Ubuntu (through the "try Ubuntu" CD), but so far none of the methods I've found have worked. If anyone could explain or direct me to a step-by-step of how to repair the MBR and install Grub2 from scratch,
I just upgraded to F15 and it went well. But at the next and each subsequent cold boot the BIOS reports "Your system last boot fail or post interrupted Please enter setup to load default and reboot". The board is an asus P5N-D. I press F1 to blow past the error and all is well until the next cold boot. Restarts are fine, no errors at all.
I am trying to setup a ventrilo server. I want it to load the server automatically on system boot so it is running at all times. I have downloaded the server files and can manually start it, but I do not know where/how to make it start automatically.
I currently have an old powermac 7220/200 with all ehe origanl stuff except for the hard drive which is now a slightly larger one. I was wondering if it was possible to set up a ubuntu installation on it using a 20g hard drive (I have got one of these going on a 486 running win98, just) and be able to run mac os as a dual boot system, possibly with 9.1 and the origanal mac os that come with it? Unfortunantly I cannot connect this computer to any internet even if I had a card that was compatible with mac os.
I installed Win7 after Ubuntu (10.10). I attempted to reload grub so that I would be able to run them dual boot and now I can't load anything.
I followed the guide here: [url] and went threw it a couple of times now to make sure it wasn't user error.
I am using a live cd from 10.04 because it's the only one I have. Any chance that's why it isn't working properly? I wouldn't think so, but I assume that it's possible.
If that is the case; Any way to solve it without using the live cd? I cannot burn a new disk because I have to boot from disk to use my computer right now.
I just get a flashing cursor on a blank screen when I try to load.
A colleague of mine was studying at the University of Vienna and saw an application which was based on linux whereby other pc's booted from it and if on the server they had set it to force a clean install on that PC it would download and install a windows image. Does anyone know of the app or could point me in the direction of a similar app.
I just recently installed ubuntu 9.10 in my upstairs computer. It is a single boot system.Downstairs I have a dual boot system. I have windows vista and ubuntu 9.10 installed. It worked fine. I wanted to make this a single boot system and uninstall ubuntu 9.10. I cannot get rid of the grub bootloade
I generate more than 50GB of cache files on my RHEL server (and typical file size is 200kb so no of files is huge). When I try to delete these files it takes 8-10 hours. However, the bigger issue is that the system load goes to critical for these 8-10 hours. Is there anyway where I can keep the system load under control during the deletion.I tried using
my data resides in a partition sda2 - in a logical volume lv_root.unless I'm wrong lv_root contains the information on how to load the partition.so superficially it seems the partition must be loaded bofore we get the info on how to load it.
Whenever someone copies a data Our system get very slow. Load average of system starts increasing. How would i find which process is causing the same. I have tried following top 10 CPU utilizing process command but it didn't help much.

just wanted to know if you can load more than one linux operating system on one hard drive? is it just like having windows and linux? I'm using ubuntu now but I really like opensuse as well.
I am in the beginning stages of building an LFS (http://linuxfromscratch.org) system, but the thing is I don't have any space on my laptop to build it on. However, recently the GPU on my desktop went down and I have been unwilling to take the steps to have it fixed (variety of reasons). My main worry about building an LFS system was about rendering the computer unusable, but since this machine was already broken...I am looking at this as an opportunity.
I had two hard-drives on the desktop, one with linux (ssh enabled) and the other had windows which I subsequently deleted. Since I can't use the desktop directly because of the broken GPU, I am thinking of using ssh to connect and build the rest from there. So far, everything seems to be going according to plan, but I am just beginning the build, so thus far I have only partitioned and built the filesystems.
I want to measure the system load on my Ubuntu media center computer. What commands and utilities are available? I've explored the w, top, iostat, and uptime commands. Anything else I could use?
After changing servers and moving things around, I have one system which serves the /home directories, and for some reason, it is extremely slow. I've looked for duplicate IPs, signs of a HW problem, etc. and cannot figure out why the system is running with a high load, high iowaits, and low responsiveness. The servers and clients are slackware 12.2 and 13.1 respectively.
I have a computer running Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit with Gnome and another computer running Windows 7 64-bit. How can I share folders between these? I can use Samba to view my Windows shares, if I specify the IP address by going to the "Connect to Server..." option in the Places menu. Going to "Network" in Nautilus and trying to open "Windows Network" fails because it could not retrieve the share list from the server.
MY question, though, is how can I set up Samba (or some other software) such that my Windows box will be able to see my shared folders? And also, what is the difference between Samba and Samba4 (because both are in the repositories).
I want to copy a file (home/remote_computer_user/Desktop/test1.txt) from my remote office computer (a permanent URL + open port) to my home computer (home/home_computer_user/Downloads/).
How can I do this with shell commands in Linux?
My current thoughts:
ssh <user>@<computer1address> -p <port> - gives me a shell on the remote computer (I think I should use scp, but I dont how exactly how in my case)
I installed ubuntu using wubi and then I tried installing grub 2 but it failed. I need a way to reinstall the mbr sp it will load the windows 7 loader from the first partition.
Ubuntu 9.1 is installed in sda1, however, while creating a separate boot partition an error occurred and now I can not boot sda1. I get the message load kernel first. I have tried without success to learn to load a kernel.
