I burned about 5 different CDs and could not load Ubuntu onto my computer. I would get error messages. I then took the CD and tried it on my wife's computer. Instant success. My present computer has Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. The optical drive is relatively new and has been used rarely.

My computer(win xp) crashed. When I turn it on I get the flickering line. If I press F2 while the BIOS is loading I can access the BIOS setup, but no operating system will load. I am not very familiar with BIOS. I put a cd in the cd drive that contained the latest download of Ubuntu and told it to reboot. Nothing happened. Setup says my CD-drive is set to a secondary drive. I looked in the CD files and I saw the windows installer (wubi). Is there a way I can boot linux?
View 13 Replies View RelatedMy computer was built by a small, local business. This past spring, I wiped the computer and reinstalled Windows 7 Pro from a 64 disk. It has worked well. I wanted to play with Ubuntu, so I set up a dual-boot. When I first installed Ubuntu last week, I had issues with Java. After countless failures from Google, I installed a new Ubuntu partition without deleting the old one. The other day, I got curious and wanted to try Mint. This went on yet another partition. Yesterday I wanted to organize this out better, so I formatted the Mint partition and it's swap. The computer functioned just fine until I tried to reboot. It starts out with normal BIOS(?) stuff, "Loading Operating System..." for a bit... and then breaks. It says something about not being able to find device, shows a UUID, then goes into grub rescue.
I spent around an hour or so Googling about this and have come up with nothing. Internet tells me to do this, I do, nothing happens. Internet tells me to do that, the file does not exist, nothing happens. I was Googling via my mom's laptop, and I am currently posting this from Firefox on the LiveCD (demo). I still have my Windows 7 install disk, although finding it is a different story.
How do I fix my booting issue, preferably without losing any data from my second Ubuntu install (I do not care about the first one - on sdb5?) or Windows 7.

After normal use the computer was turned on and would not load (10.04) and the error message on the screen was :

Anyways, I put the hard drive in an external unit, and I ran fsck. Many errors came up and they were all fixed. I was able to mount the drive on my other computer and back up files in the home directory.
If I try to select recovery mode and the same error appears.
What can I do in this case? Can I somehow get into a recovery-like mode off of the livecd to maybe fix the packages that might be "messed up"?
I just added a 3rd hard drive, but now when I boot my computer grub doesn't load at all, it just boots to Windows. I've tried holding down Shift, and I've tried holding down ESC but it didn't work. I believe I have grub2.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having problems with getting the drivers to work for a geforce 9500gt.To get started Im working with a fresh install of 8.10, and I have successfully installed the driver package for this card from nvidia's site, version 260.The problem comes after I restart the computer. It fails to load. I am able to install the driver and start X and it works greatI can even restart x and it still works. but as soon as I restart the computer it doesn't load. I then need to reinstall the driver. I am curious if anyone has an idea of whats wrong here? I am wondering if it's a possible xorg.conf problem so I will post that below.

If a site reaches a point where 1 machine simply isn't enough to handle it, what exactly is done? I've heard of "round robin DNS load balancing", but that's obviously not going to work if the site has CGI scripts/a substantial backend of any kind as that data will have to be copied over to every server, and I'd guess that that's not feasible. If the site uses a MYSQL server, and a second web server to take over the extra traffic from the first is put up (how would traffic be redirected to it?), when it makes a database query, it still has to connect to the 1st server, so, we're not really solving the problem at all, it remains just the same.
So - how is it done, for large, high traffic sites? (possibly like LQ itself?)
I am unable to load Ubuntu onto computer as dual boot or inside windows. Thus scanned the CD and found it has 23 errors.Are these files suppose to be on the CD?casper, .disk, install, install, isolinux, pics, pool, pressed, autorun, md5sum.

I boot linux from a usb drive so I can carry my distro wherever I go - I've been doing it for quite some time now and it's always worked wonderfully. Problem: This morning my little cousin unplugged the computer WHILE I was booting into linux. Power loss has happened before, but with no ill effects. This time however, it's decided it won't boot. The screen clears, and just as GRUB is about to load, it freezes and the computer reboots over and over.
I booted to a LiveCD of Ubuntu to try and fsck the drive, but it won't mount the volume. I've worked with this install so long, and have customized it so much I **really** don't want to do a reinstall.. What can I do?
I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network.My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

When i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox,epiphany,opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows.Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success.The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

I have found that APACHE or 'httpd' is installed in my machine. But the problem is I can start or stop the httpd but whenever I load the url http://localhost in Mozilla it shows a page load error.I have done this ,

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.
I noticed my Firefox loading rather slow (took around 5 - 7 seconds to load and navigate pages, even google, and it would sometimes become unresponsive), I thought it may have been a addon problem, so I opened up a new Firefox profile with no addons but the browser crashed upon loading the certain page I was trying to view, and I figured I'd look into it later and use Chromium for a while (I'll be open, I was trying to watch an pron tube site, and when your, you know, you don't really feel like stopping to go technical and try to fix it or whatever), but Chromium said that the flash player wasn't installed. I thought it was kinda odd, but then again I didn't want to go technical and thought maybe since mozilla firefoxs engine loaded the flash, I'd use Mozilla Seamonkey which uses the same gecko engine. The flash wasn't working either on there.
I tried looking up to see if there was a 64bit deb package for flash, but they didn't have it, and I seen someone mention that doing the 'apt-get upgrade' upgrades it, so I did that, and it also said it installed some extra packages when doing it, but I figured it was just that getlibs grabbing the extra dependencies and went along with installing them (after all there shouldnt be much to lose since its from the repository, right?)
I restarted the computer to give the updates a chance to take effect (it didn't mention to restart, but I thought I'd go ahead and do it anyways to ensure it updated okay).
This is where the booting problem comes in: When my laptop restarted, the loading was going across very slowly (I have ubuntu studio installed through regular ubuntu, so it was showing the text filling up), normally it would just fill a little bit of the first "U" in "Ubuntu Studio" and then be done quickly, but now it goes slowly all the way, and when it fills "Ubuntu Studio", it stills stays there, it doesn't load on.

Here's the situation:
I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.
so here's my problem. I am trying to install windows xp on my computer in virtual machine so i can watch netflix on my computer. The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem
I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

i have 2 computers.both have pidgin messenger with the same accounts (yahoo, msn, aim, facebook...). both can connect at the same time. both connect at startup.both work well.some of the chat protocols disconnect upon sensing multiple connections (as in, when one account signs in from two places).good.others don't.bad.
is there a way to remotely disconnect the OTHER computer's pidgin while using the current computer? while both instances of pidgin are running, the OTHER computer will see all incoming messages on pidgin. anyone at that computer will see a one-sided conversation.simple solution would be to stop them from connecting at startup. that still doesn't solves the problem of "what if i forgot to turn one off" or "what if someone runs pidgin on the other computer."
My wifes networked computer connected to the network just fine when it was Win XP. Now that Ive converted it to 10.04 (completely) it can see the network, but it just wont connect to it. I had no problem converting my computer to Ubuntu and it sees the network and accesses it great. Files, folders and hard drives are all shared.
