General :: Old HDD Attacked By Virus XP Pro OS And Avast Anti-spyware Didn't Protect
Oct 5, 2010
Advised on another forum to install XP pro then Linux on HD. Decided to try it. Not that savy with computers and have a mini-laptop in addition to desktop that was attacked. Virus
cause most programs to fail. Disc was nearly full (250GB) so I'm buying a refurbed Seagate (500GB) and need to learn to back up files onto flash drive or something. Lost a lot of photos and emails that were good reference material. Heard a lot about Linux so I'm going to give it a try.
My Ubuntu 9.10 is intalled on a partition on my computer HDD. The other partition OS is Windows XP. My Windows uses McAfee as the antiviral program. Granted that linux is at a much less risk for viruses, some still apparently can slide through on incoming emails from Windows computers.
1) Will my Windows partition McAfee protect the entire computer? 2) If not, suggestions for an anti-viral program?

I want to setup a Linux Fedora based Anti-Virus & Anti-Spam Server on my LAN. I have more than 60 Windows users with Proxy Squid running on LAN. Our Email server is hosted on the Internet. Because of virus/spam generate problem, emails are worst affected & the users have a lot of problem on Email, as the outlook gives error. It happens when a PC generates Spam & our IP gets blocked by the ISP for some time. Thats why I want to setup an Anti VIRUS/SPAM Firewall on my LAN (before the Squid), so these spams do not go past the Internet Gateway.Hope u guys understand my problem & suggest some useful links, software & documentations.
I'm looking for a bootable (livecd) cd that will perform an antivirus scan on a computer without needing an internet connection. It should have its latest virus signatures included so I can simply download and burn it. I've seen [URL].. suggested in various questions asked here, but that post is from 2008.
I tried:
Bitdefender rescue cd Trinity rescue kit (TRK) Panda SafeCD
I want to make a anti-virus Linux to put on a USB drive for use with other computers that have viruses. The only problem is I have no idea how to do this. CLI-only should be fine (if there are any CLI anti-virus programs). So is there something I can get that's already made for this or should I get a regular distro and remove everything I don't want and install what I do? What tools should I get.? Also, a link to instructions on installing on a USB drive would be helpful (I also plan on putting some LiveUSB's on the same drive,
This might be a very stupid questions, but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any antivirus software for Linux?I know that it normally is not something that is needed, but in the company where I work they have a policy saying that every OS must have a realtime anti virus program installed on the pc's with automatic updates.
I am brand new to Linux.I was wondering if there is an anti-virus software that runs under Linux (Ubuntu Live), that can scan Windows files and get rid of the viruses?I ask this as I had a trojan that was detected, but could not be deleted under Windows; I had to us Ubuntu live to delete it, which seemed to have worked.
I am running Windows XP in VirtualBox. I generally only use it for iTunes and some light browsing occassionally. Downloads only occur on iTunes, but it does have internet access. And my wife will still only use Windows, so if she uses this particular machine it is available to her, and she occassionally goes to facebook on this machine.
Should I install an anti-virus? Is it really necessary? I am pretty certain my Linux install would be unaffected even if a virus or other malware did occur in VirtualBox.
I tried to ask this question in the other thread but the admin was saying to me that my other thread here [URL]..( it was not very much the subject of the thread ) People that use Unix,Mac OSX or any Linux OS all none windows do you need anti-virus program like Norton or Kaspersky? And same with firewall like ZoneAlarm and Comodo ?
Some people say you do not need a anti-virus program like Norton or Kaspersky or any firewall.Other people say you do and some say that Unix and Mac OSX have built in firewall.
And if on uses windows use ZoneAlarm or Comodo has it does alot more than windows firewall and router firewall. Note the admin saying the other thread was why windows get more malware and not very much the subject of the thread to post there.
I am trying to find a PCI compliant anti-virus that will scan uploads automatically for the debian lenny operating system. We are running the OS as a server with kernel 2.6.24 I am trying to avoid ClamAV as it is a pretty big system hog.

As a completely new user of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, I will no doubt be asking some pretty basic questions, first. in Evolution Mail I am unable to get in or out it merely shows waiting, as Firefox is workingI am connected to the net (hard-wired to broadband wireless router), suspect I put dud info. in the initial set-up, but cannot find how to edit or re-enter these parameters.
Secondly on looking for AVG anti-virus progs on the internet, I find that there are several prefixes which one is for this version?
I have a Cent OS dedicated server, not sure what version though as I'm new to Linux. How do I find out what version I have? Is there an anti virus or security package that I can install on my server which can use Cron Jobs to do a scan every 12 hours.
I have a Western Digital Pasport 320 GB hard drive. I wanted to create a live installation on it like a USB stick. I wanted it to serve as a portable OS that I could use to boot any other computer off of, and use it for diagnostics and anti-virus scanning on Windows based computers. The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place. What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.
Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.
I have a server Linux/Centos 5.3 who I have formed it like server of data with samba for a network with 5 Windows XP terminals; desire to know if it is also possible to form this equipment like server anti-virus multiplatform so that it can look for virus (and clean) to the terminals win xp.
I was looking for by the network on this subject, but I have not had favorable results, please if somebody could help with some Link or tutorial me that has found.
I would like to use Linux in a VMWare Player window within Windows 7 to circumvent spyware infections. Is this a feasable idea or should I just dual boot?
I am using Avast anti-virus for my linux machine. On internet, I found that it has good user interface. After installing avast I can't get the interface. I've to use Avast via terminal. How can I get the user interface??
I loaded Avast anti virus into Ubuntu 10.10 this morning. It seemed to go okay and uploaded the updates. But then it stopped. Now when I try to start it I get the following error message. 'An error occurred in avast! engine: Invalid argument'
Had a couple of problems with one of my leased web/mail servers, including mail was having trouble and it was reporting disk full (when a df showed it wasn't). I did a chkrootkit and got this:
[URL] This web page says: "The team set up weak security on four Linux computers with Internet access, then recorded what happened as the individual machines were attacked. They discovered the vast majority of attacks came from relatively unsophisticated hackers using "dictionary scripts," a type of software that runs through lists of common usernames and passwords attempting to break into a computer."
How did they "record what happened as the individual machines were attacked"? How did they figure out that "the vast majority of attacks came from relatively unsophisticated hackers using 'dictionary scripts'"? What I am really getting at is that I've searched the net and found lots of advice on how to detect if your computer has been hacked but I haven't found ways to know if your computer is being attacked. Obviously, this group did that.
How does one know if an intruder had secretly accessed one's system? Does system log help? It seems it does but I am yet to figure out how to understand those files. Can anybody please help? Or are there other ways to confirm that. It may happen that the intruder had accessed some vital information but so far had not done anything malicious.
I've fedora 11/12 in my desktop in home- some other members in the house also the desktop for various reasons. I noticed that there have been a lot PORNO site visits from the desktop. The computer kinda running slow- Although I tried to scan - avg and f-prot- somehow I don't see theme scanning my pc - so I can't find any kind of spyware or virus- which I think impossible since there have 100 s of visits on those free adult sites and I am sure they would leave some footprints on my machine.
I have a dual boot computer. The WindowsXP "side" has been infected with a rootkit virus. So far UBUNTU has not been affected to my knowledge. I have not yet removed the virus from the WindowsXP "side". I am thinking of deleting the NTFS partition and have the computer fully dedicated to UBUNTU. Now for my question. Is there a possibility that the virus resides in the MBR and that I need to "rebuild" the MBR to actually remove the virus?
Even more extreme, should I totally re-install UBUNTU in the name of safety and precaution.
