I've fedora 11/12 in my desktop in home- some other members in the house also the desktop for various reasons. I noticed that there have been a lot PORNO site visits from the desktop. The computer kinda running slow- Although I tried to scan - avg and f-prot- somehow I don't see theme scanning my pc - so I can't find any kind of spyware or virus- which I think impossible since there have 100 s of visits on those free adult sites and I am sure they would leave some footprints on my machine.

I'm running Jaunty. For some reason, I cannot run Pogo games when the firewall is enabled. I've tried allowed "direct play gaming", thinking that might help, but it didn't. So i guess I need a custom protocol. What ports does Pogo use so I can allow them? Hopefully someone knows... and yes, I do have java. Pogo works if I turn the firewall off. Also, Ktorrent does not work either. I happen to know the ports this one uses, but when I make the protocol, it still doesn't allow torrents to run. The ports I'm trying are 6881 and UDP 4444.

I am establishing ad hoc connection between two PCs
1. LAPTOP: WIFI adapter OS: Ubuntu 9.10 Connection name: trial Address: 192.168.1.36 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1
2. PC with wired Internet connection + WIFI adapter OS: Windows XP Connection name and parameters same as above except ip: 192.168.1.40
I can see trial is getting connected with excellent strength. When i try to run an Internet on Ubuntu it is not working. Firewall is not active and Router is enabled.

When I enable my ufw it completely shuts me out and I have no internet connection. When I do:
Code:
sudo ufw status numbered
I get:
Status: active
To Action From
-- ------ ----
[ 1] 80 ALLOW IN Anywhere
[ 2] 80 ALLOW OUT Anywhere (out)
But I need to disable my ufw in order to reconnect back to the internet. Why is that? Doesn't the above rules indicate that I should have inbound and outbound traffic even if my firewall is up?

i am using 9.10 karmic. Firewall is enabled. added ports with ufw allow [portnumber], and i still cannot connect to a port number. iv tryed ufw allow ssh/tcp but that does not work. the ports work when i disable the firewall and i dont want to do that.
ufw is available in all new installations of Ubuntu since 8.04 LTS, but is disabled by default. The standard Ubuntu installation has a no open service ports policy, so enabling the firewall by default doesn't gain any extra security in the default installation, but could provide confusion for people new to Ubuntu when new software that is installed does not work because of restrictive firewall rules. As a result, when first adding ufw to Ubuntu it was decided that users must 'opt-in' to using the firewall. In Ubuntu 9.04 and later, you can enable ufw during installation using preseeding. See /usr/share/doc/ufw/README.Debian for details.

I have installed the graphic user interface for IPtables and enabled this firewall. However, I find it a bit strange. What is the difference between rejecting and denying the traffic? If I want to configure IPtables as two-way, how can I define which of my apps can connect to the internet and which can't? If this firewall is enabled, does it really run in the background, protecting the user,or does it run only when its GUI is opened?

Today I stumbled upon Magic_SysRq_key. Basically, it's allows the user to perform various low level commands regardless of the system's statee.g.Alt+SysRq+b will reboot the system without syncing or unmounting.(SysRq is Print on most systems.)I see the point the use for kernel hackers and such, which compile their own kernels anyway, but why is this enabled by default?

This page [URL] shows how to enable apparmor firefox profile. Why isnt apparmor firefox profile enabled by default? I would postulate that this would be because there must be some limitation by having the profile enabled. If so, what would the limitation be?

I really think that Ubuntu Server should by default have SMART monitoring enabled, and possibly prompt for a notification e-mail address (and SMTP server details if required) for SMART notifications to be sent to.

I just set up a test CentOS 5.4 host to run the Freeswitch IP PBX. Although the process is up and running and I can connect to the host through SSH, none of the IP phones can connect to Freeswitch:
Does someone know if CentOS comes with a firewall by default that would allow SSH connections but nothing else? "ps aux" returned nothing that looked like a firewall process.

Been thinking about changing over to 64 bit, but I was just curious about whether or not I'll have to worry about incompatibility with a few 32bit-only applications I use, once I've set up multilib. I'll test it out in vbox when I get home but I wanted to check here to see if I could maybe get a solid yes/no/maybe answer.

What is a good IP filter/firewall program? Seeing as how I like free softwares, I download a lot of torrents. When I was using Windows, I used PeerBlock (the newer fork of PeerGuardian), however, it's not available for Linux. What would be a good alternative for this in Linux? I tried iplist as it has a GUI, and it was extremely buggy and blocked random web pages even after I put them on the exceptions list. And MoBlock has no GUI from I understand, nor has it been updated in years.

I have to make my final exam on network & security, my task is to compare Iptables and a firewall program, yeah not a distribution. I use Archlinux so I'd like to continue use it for my project! Anyway my question is: which Network firewall could be the best one? I need this features:
- packet filtering
- HA (High Availability)
- Live (active) connection migration (if one fails...)
- Load balancing (not really important but...)
I know "many" firewalls but they all are distro. I need something to install on a linux machine (as said... better if I can run it directly on Archlinux!)

I tried to ask this question in the other thread but the admin was saying to me that my other thread here [URL]..( it was not very much the subject of the thread ) People that use Unix,Mac OSX or any Linux OS all none windows do you need anti-virus program like Norton or Kaspersky? And same with firewall like ZoneAlarm and Comodo ?
Some people say you do not need a anti-virus program like Norton or Kaspersky or any firewall.Other people say you do and some say that Unix and Mac OSX have built in firewall.
And if on uses windows use ZoneAlarm or Comodo has it does alot more than windows firewall and router firewall. Note the admin saying the other thread was why windows get more malware and not very much the subject of the thread to post there.

Recently, I've been contacted through AIM by a showgirl who wants me to watch her webcam. I found it very unusual that I was contacted about this, especially through AIM. Now, I don't actively give out my AIM screen name. The only place I am aware of it being posted up is on Facebook, and even I have my privacy on Friends so no one outside my network could see it... and even then my birthday on Facebook is underaged for this scandalous activity.
So I don't believe my screen name was gathered from Facebook in its use in this.Is it possible that I am infected some data mining spyware? How does Ubuntu deal with tracking cookies? I also consider that my screen name was mined from someone else's AIM account by which I was then contacted.

I know Slackware probably doesn't require too much protection from viruses or spyware, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to help protect it (other than Common Sense).
I ask this for 2 reasons:
1. I'm Paranoid
2. Every now and then I mistype a website I go to and it takes me to a completely different website which frightens me because of my paranoia.
So is there anything I can do to help protect Slackware, and in the rare case I get a virus is there a way to remove it directly?
Is it also possible to use Slackware (currently Master drive) to remove a virus on Windows (slave drive)?

I have a dual monitor setup in Ubuntu, with my main monitor on the right and the monitor I want to extend to on the left monitor, but I can't seem to get it to do this, it always has the 'desktop' on the left monitor and then extends onto what I want to be my main monitor. I have an ATI Radeon 4350 Graphics card.
