Where do I find the linux-source package and the linux-headers package? Are they on the CD that I can copy to /usr/src (is that the right place...)? Or do I need to download them from the old-releases.ubuntu.com site?
The issue now is that the nVidia installer from their website wants the source code to build the right packages for this machine, however, I do not have the src directory with the source code that it is looking for. Is there some way to give this too it now?
I am running Mythbuntu 7.10

This probably isnt the correct place to put this, But I can hardly understand how this forum is organized. And forget blogging, I dont even know what that is, let alone how to make one.
Anyway i see tons of requests for installing the ATI drivers in linux, I can only help with the debian based distros.
This was originally posted here http://www.mepis.org/node/13647
Quote:
Finally, after many days of research on how to install Ati proprietary drivers on Mepis 6.5 with 3D and dual-monitor enabled and my Radeon x1950Pro I have come to a successful install and i will share my method below.
My system specs are below.
I read a lot of documentation and tried many guides on Ubuntu/Mepis forums with no or limited results until I found a guide on a french Ubuntu forum that guided me to success.
I had to modify the guide to my needs since it was aimed at installing on Ubunto 7.04 Feity Fawn. Since Mepis 6.5 is based in part on Ubuntu 6.06 the core parts of the guide were adequate.
If you follow every step to the letter eveything should work right away, and fast. (Make a backup of your xorg.conf before you do this!) Make sure your monitor(s) is setup or detected properly in xorg.conf
So here it is customized, adapted and translated to english:
1)Go here and download latest ati drivers: [url]
In our present case these are:
Quote:
ati-driver-installer-8.36.5-x86.x86_64.run
2) If you tried installing previous versions of fglrx Use synaptics search function and remove everything with "fglrx" in its name before we start.
3)Open a console
Here is a one liner you can use that does everything above in one shot:
4)Reboot PC (Will probalby be command line logon with no GUI (X))
Login to your user and then su to root and enter: aticonfig --initial or in my personal case
aticonfig --dtop=horizontal --overlay-on=1 --force-monitor=crt1,crt2
I noticed on some of my tests that sometimes the xorg.conf files dissapears during this process. Seems like a bug. In such a case restore your backup and repeat the aticonfig routine.
type
reboot
5)When you are rebooted you will have a working gui but no 3D acceleration yet. So open a console and su to root
kwrite /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Add:
To the end of your xorg.conf
CTRL-ALT BACKSPACE or Reboot
Test in console as root and you should have 3D
fglrxinfo

Is there an easy way to update Perl from repos or do I need to compile from source to get a newer version?
Longer version
I'm trying to set-up MailScanner which requires a newer version of Perl IO than CentOS 5 appears to have in it's standard repos. I've also tried updating Perl from the rpmforge repo - but that just results in a bunch of transaction conflicts being reported by Yum. Is there another way of updating Perl from repos?

I recently migrated from Ubuntu 10.10 to Opensuse 11.3
I sometimes need lxsplit to join splitted files.
In Ubuntu I installed lxsplit from the repos but I can't find it in the Add/Remove software, here in opensuse.
Do I need to enable any additional repos to install lxsplit?

As I have 15 repo's enabled in Yast it a bit tedious changing them in the package manager, is there an easier way to bulk change them? Something like doing a kfilereplace on the /etc/zypp/repos.d/ folder and changing all occurances of 11.3 to 11.4 (in all *repo, which are all the files in the folder). Will this work?

I have used the following
Code: #Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: none# title Ubuntu 10.04 booting via symlinks kernel (hd0,6)/vmlinuz root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST9500325AS_6VE3ZHX6-part7 ro quiet splash initrd (hd0,6)/initrd.img for Ubuntu for some time. Can this symlinks-booting technique (with the appropriate partition numbers/names) be used for LinuxMint and/or Fedora ?
Currently, I have one PC with Ubuntu's GRUB2 managing multiple distros (openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Fedora) with Windows 7. I would like to replace it with the openSUSE GRUB, and the Ubuntu, LinuxMint and Fedora are rarely used.

I want to do something that would make my life easier. Problem:
1. I use OpenSUSE as my main OS for over 2 years now. BUT I like playing with a flavor of the month OS.
2. Virtual OS installs are not my cup of tea. a) You don't get a "true" feeling for the OS without it being installed on metal. b) I have a OLD cpu and virtual anything is painfully slow.
Solution: Split the /home directory into three partitions.
1. Shared /home partition holding all visible data files
2. OpenSUSE /home partition having all the hidden .files and .directories for its configuration.
3. Flavor of the month OS /home partition having all the hidden .files and .directories for its configuration.
Reasoning:
I can therefore install another OS or Distro and just format and install to 2 partitions. I still have all my documents and files in a separate shared partition.
Issues:
1. I understand why they made the configuration files in /home for multiple users, but when someone wants to keep trying out different things it causes problems. 2. I don't want to place my files on my NAS. I have the same issue. My config files are saved in the NAS/home/and I can't share it without headaches. Doesn't solve my issue. 3. A symbolic link (soft) won't work since it will not update itself if files are moved.
4. Drop Box won't solve my issue and just take up space. 5. Syncing the /home/ folders between the two would take double the space. Just an issue with videos music and pictures. 6. If I make any changes won't this causes issues with the operating system and applications placing .config and defaults to the wrong place?
Solution I can't figure out how to process:
1. Save my .config files on a separate partition.
2. Making a link for each folder from the SUSE or Flavor of the month's /home folder to the storage /home folder located on a separate partition.

I do a lot of programming and I have to compile the code quite often. It's not convenient to move to the directory that contains the source code every time I want to compile it. So is there a way to compile a code from the my current directory (say /home example) without moving to the directory that contains the source. I remember being able to do this but forgotten how.
EDIT: I'm using makefiles to compile. Lets say I'm in the home directory and when I type
make -f /code/make_file
this doesn't seem to work

i try to compile a c code which uses SSH library,but i get this error
Code:
libssh.h: No such file or directory
i searched and i found that This happens if a library used for linking is not present in the standard library directories used by gcc.
By default, gcc searches the following directories for header files:
/usr/local/include/
/usr/include/
and the following directories for libraries:
/usr/local/lib/
/usr/lib/
i update my libssh from libssh-0.4.2-1.fc13.i686 to libssh-0.4.6-1.fc13.i686, and there are files called libssh.so.4 and libssh.so.4.0.2 in /ur/lib, but i still can't compile it with this command:
gcc test.c

I have legacy fortran 77 code that used to compile seamlessly using g77 on an old machine. I've tried to recompile it on a new machine (old one is dead) using the original makefile, but the linker fails under g77, while there are persisting syntax errors using gfortran. I have two source files readmixed.f and subroutines.f. Under g77 the object files are produced using
Quote:
$ f77 -c readmixed.f -o readmixed.o
$ f77 -c subroutines.f -o subroutines.o
but the linking fails with
Quote:
$ f77 readmixed.o subroutines.o -o readmixed
subroutines.o(.text+0x0): In function `norm1_':
: multiple definition of `norm1_'
readmixed.o(.text+0x3987): first defined here

I'm trying to write a helper for the mount utility (mount.truecrypt) and there are some things in the util-linux-ng package that would be helpful. For example, in fstab.c, there is a lock_mtab() function. I want to be able to do something like:
Code:
#include "fstab.h"
int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
lock_mtab();
[code]....
But I don't know how to compile it. I was trying (naively) something like:
Code:
$ gcc mount.truecrypt.c fstab.c -o mount.truecrypt
But I guess the problem is fstab needs a whole bunch of other stuff. Should I just build the entire util-linux-ng package and then use the output somehow? If anyone is interested in mount.truecrypt (to be compatible with mount and /etc/fstab) you might be interested in giving me a little bit of guidance. I've got enough code to build the actual truecrypt command thus far. In fact, it's useable, but not robust (ie, doesn't lock the mtab, etc). You can browse the source for util-linux-ng here: [URL] and download a tagged release here:[URL]

After updating to natty I cannot compile any Gtk+ code, no matter what I do I get linker errors. This is not a problem with the way I'm building it, I'm familiar with the correct usage of pkg-config.
Even this code will fail to link:
Code:
#include <gtk/gtk.h>
int main(int argc, char** argv) {
gkt_init(&argc, &argv);
gtk_main(); }
(Compiled with the standard commands to compile Gtk+ stuff)
I always get the following output:
Code:
/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so: undefined reference to `g_source_get_time'
/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so: undefined reference to `g_get_monotonic_time'
/usr/lib/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so: undefined reference to `g_simple_async_result_take_error'

I've been trying to work out a way to stop chunks of code being compiled using a variable in my makefile but can't work it out. What I mean is for example in my code I might have.
/****output comms portdata********/
printf("
debug comms port %d",ReadPort("ttys1);
I only wish this code to be compiled when I'm debugging. What I've tried is using #ifdef with
#ifdef COMM_PORT_DEBUG
printf("
debug comms port %d",ReadPort("ttys1);
#endif
Then in my make file I set COMM_PORT_DEBUG to 1 so
DEBUG_DEFS = COMM_PORT_DEBUG=1
I then thought I could put it into my in my link line
all: $(CC) $(CPFLAGS) $(DEBUG_DEFS) $(INC_PATHS) $(SOURCE) -o $(PROGRAM) $(LIB_DIRS) $(GAME_LIBS)
but this gives a
gcc: COMM_PORT_DEBUG=1: No such file or directory
is there a way to do this sort of thing? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
