General :: Using A Live CD Of CrunchBang To Install Chkdsk To USB Drive?

Jan 17, 2011

My PC has been blue screening since yesterday, and I can't boot into Windows, which the rest of my family needs. I tried to repair from this live CD, but to no avail. If I had a XP Install disk, I'd be OK, but... I don't. I've read around, and it seems that I just need to run chkdsk, but that doesn't run under Linux, and there is no program to do the same under Linux. install and run chkdsk from a USB flash drive?

General :: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" R20110207 Install Hangs - Detecting Network Devices

May 3, 2011

I was wondering if anyone had any issues with this. I recently tried installing CrunchBang and it got stuck while detecting the network device. (Would not recover)I had the same issue when attempting to install the Debian Testing release. I finally got Testing up and going but I had to start with Squeeze and then upgrade. Unfortunately I don't see how I could do that with Crunch Bang.

I tried the live cd of CrunchBang and found it to be a great minimalistic approach to a desktop.

Ubuntu :: Could Not Get Actual CrunchBang Install Files

Apr 10, 2011

I had the problem: "could not download all repository indexes". On Cruncheee (An EEEPC specific Crunchbang distro), which I managed to "fix" by changing the /etc/apt/sources.list file by replacing it with stuff I found in a guide. (Shown at end). Now when I press the Reload button on Synaptic no more errors come up! But when I search for "audacious" (music player) I can only find "crunchbang-audacious-theme", and no actual crunchbang installing things.

What have I actually done to my my sources.list file, did I tell it to look elsewhere for servers with lists of dependencies? Is a "repository" just a place on the internet which has lots of dependencies in it? If I were to just add more and more stuff to my sources.list file and kept pressing "reload" on Synaptic, would I eventually find some packages to install Audacious? What does "sudo apt-get" do? Is that exactly the same as finding something on synaptic and clicking it?

My new sources.list:
## Add comments (##) in front of any line to remove it from being checked.
## Use the following sources.list at your own risk.
deb [URL] dapper main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src [URL] dapper main restricted universe multiverse

General :: Way To Run CHKDSK From Ubuntu?

Aug 6, 2011

My computer has taken a dive and it will not boot up. I have reasons to believe that it is the hard drive. I would like to run CHKDSK but I cannot get the computer to boot up into Windows. My question is this: Is there a way to run CHKDSK from Ubuntu? I can boot into UBuntu using a USB and I can mount and see the hard drive contents (and access them). I was wondering if there is any way I can get chkdsk/r to run and see what happens. (Anyway I can get it to run inside or outside of Ubuntu)

I am trying to install Debian Live to a 4 GB flash drive. I am using UNetBootin to extract this (debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso) file to a FAT32 partition on my flash drive. It installs fine, and shows me the SysLinux menu fine, but when i choose live(or anything else) it says"Invalid or Corrupt Kernel Image". I also tryed these other installers. pendrivelinux's Universal USB Installer. It gives me the same message. win32diskimager gives me a different Debian menu, but the same problem. Does anyone know what is wrong, and how to fix it. It is driving me nuts!

OpenSUSE Install :: Error Message Trying To Run Live KDE On A USB Thumb Drive?

Sep 14, 2010

been a fan of openSUSE for years now and peridocially go back and forth between Suse and Windows. However, I'm still an enthusiastic amateur when it comes to this stuff. Well, I bought a netbook (Acer Aspire ONE) several months back and loved Win 7 (a first for me). However, like all Windows, they all go down the crapper. So I'm wanting to completely wipe out Windows and go all Suse on my netbook. So I downloaded KDE Live and "burned" it on my USB. BTW, the image writer that are in the directions only writes, .raw files not .iso. I had to use a third party software.I then went into my BIOS and put the USB drive first on the booting list, and then restarted. Right off the bat I get the error message.Could not find kernel image: gfxbootAll I want to do is install openSUSE on my netbook

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install/boot From Live Cd Or Flash Drive

Aug 17, 2010

I have made several live Cd's and img for my flash drive and tried to even preview Ubuntu before install, but nothing seems to be working. it makes it to the screen that says Ubuntu with the dots and the dots "cycle" then afew seconds later, weather cd or flash drive, everything just stops and my computer freezes. Tried nomodeset and everything i could find between here and google to no avail.

cant get past that load screen. Ive been lurking on the forum for days and finally got fed up enough to post this because im fresh and have no clue what im doing when it comes to this. all i know is i want something better than windows(lol) and Ubuntu seems like its right up my alley...user, my "skills" if you will, are better than most, but Linux.its like trying to reed Greek for me.Also, computer specs...Toshiba A505-S6025 4gb Memory Nvidia GeForce 310M (from what i read i will have trouble with this) Realtek RTL8191SE wlan (also will have problems with this)

EDIT: just ran live cd with virtual box and it started the demo of Ubuntu with no problem with no options(like nomodeset) checked off... apparently i think im doing something wrong when it comes to booting the other way...

General :: Ubuntu Live Disk Not Recognizing Internal And External Drive File Systems?

Jan 6, 2010

Im using it in an attempt to backup all of the files off of my dead Windows xp Computer. Right now I am using the 9.10 live disk of Ubuntu and cannot get the program to recognize what kind of file system my internal hard drive is using. (A western digital 320 GB hard drive with partition 1 in NTFS and part2 in FAT32) I would like to be able to back up this drive onto my 1 TB Western Digital external hard drive that is also in ntfs.

Now here comes the wierd part, it won't read or recognize my interal and external hard drives that run those file systems but it will recognize and allow me to read, edit, and access all of the ntfs hard drives on my home network. I did some lurking and tried a tutorial for creating a mount point and on how to force mount a disk, but neither of my disks would show up in Places/Computer. So then I checked the /etc/fstab file and is says,

aufs / aufs rw 0 0
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0

Which I think means that it says I have no hard drives installed or connected to the computer. Yet when I go into Disk Utility it tells me the disk is there and asks if I want to format the disk into ntfs...

Fedora :: Dualbooting - Windows 'chkdsk' Does Not Run On Reboot

Aug 25, 2010

I have been dual booting Windows 7 with Fedora for a while (using GRUB, with Fedora as the primary OS) but am running into some problems now.

When in Windows, I was notified that a folder was corrupt and was advised to run chkdsk. So I ran this in the command prompt:

Code:
chkdsk c: /F

which would run on the next reboot. When I restarted the computer, this didn't run.

I believe this problem has to do with the current MBR running GRUB, and not Windows immediately. In Windows, if I go to:Advanced system settings->Advanded->Startup and Recovery->Settings, the default OS is blank with no options available. Also, when running msconfig, under the boot tab, no OS is available.

I backed up the MBR in Linux and then tried to use the Windows recovery disk to do a repair, but no OS was found here as well.

If it helps any, here's what I get when I run 'fdisk -l'

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Ubuntu Installation :: Going From Crunchbang 9.04 Back To Lucid

Apr 28, 2010

I'm planning on going from Crunchbang 9.04 back to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. My main concern is drivers and such. I have an Asus K40 with 4 gb ram, and Nvidia graphics cards. Last time, I had a disaster with Jaunty. The suspect is Gnome, as Crunchbang works. Is there a chance that I could have issues using the 64-bit 10.04 LTS? I need a stable system. It is going to take me a while to set up the new system so I want to make sure I'm prepared for any issues. I'm doing a clean install. I can pull up hardware types, etc, if need be later tonight.
