I have a MacbookPro 5,1 with 2GBRAM, which successfully dual-boots with Ubuntu 9.04 since a year. I wish to urgently install ubuntustudio, and also wish to have one or perhaps two more partitions, where I may install the latest Ubuntu as well as another Linux distro.
Typically, think of a multi-boot scenario:
Mac OSX 10.5.x
Ubuntu 9.04 <<--working production install, not to be messed.
UbuntuStudio 10.4
Ubuntu 10.10 [just a few days left!]
Fedora or Knoppix or Debian.
if possible, i'd also like to keep one partition free and unallocated, or reformat a partition, if i ever need to install windows. any thing i'd need to watch out for in this? I've got no extra or free partitions, only free space on the mac partition, that i'd like to carve out and allocate to partitions. Also, before i begin, is there a way I can clone my entire mac+linux hard-disk so in the event of a failure i can get *everything* back, mac as well as ubuntu? I bought a hd of an identical size, but use it with Time Machine. I'd rather use it to clone the entire hd.

Thinking of installing Kimpanel plasmoid for Japanese input as an alternative to Skim due to it's unstable / incompatibility with KDE4. Anybody have any experience with it? Which anthy backend works best? scim-anthy or ibus-anthy? Install instructions at all or does it drag in all its own dependencies?

I have used the following
Code: #Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: none# title Ubuntu 10.04 booting via symlinks kernel (hd0,6)/vmlinuz root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST9500325AS_6VE3ZHX6-part7 ro quiet splash initrd (hd0,6)/initrd.img for Ubuntu for some time. Can this symlinks-booting technique (with the appropriate partition numbers/names) be used for LinuxMint and/or Fedora ?
Currently, I have one PC with Ubuntu's GRUB2 managing multiple distros (openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Fedora) with Windows 7. I would like to replace it with the openSUSE GRUB, and the Ubuntu, LinuxMint and Fedora are rarely used.

I'm trying to install OpenSuse 11.2. During installation there's a problem. It offers to create an LVM with encryption. That's fine. The problem is: it only uses 15GB of my 250GB hard drive. When I try to alter the partitions, I can't. When I try to remove the partitions and create new partitions myself it seems OK but a few minutes later the installation quits with 0333. I googled on resizing the LVM, but it brought me nowhere. There seems to be no working manual on how to do that. How do I install my system without having over 90% of my disk unused?

1. I have dual booted Suse and Win Xp in past. Can idea be applied to different versions of Suse? I have a working Suse11.2 , and I have a spare partition (15GB) which can be re-formated.
2. Can i do a clean new install to the spare partition? Thus ending with two working Suse versions? ( Separate /home partitions). This would allow a) reserve of a working system while checking that 11.3 works. Then remove 11.2 later , and how to do that.

I want to do something that would make my life easier. Problem:
1. I use OpenSUSE as my main OS for over 2 years now. BUT I like playing with a flavor of the month OS.
2. Virtual OS installs are not my cup of tea. a) You don't get a "true" feeling for the OS without it being installed on metal. b) I have a OLD cpu and virtual anything is painfully slow.
Solution: Split the /home directory into three partitions.
1. Shared /home partition holding all visible data files
2. OpenSUSE /home partition having all the hidden .files and .directories for its configuration.
3. Flavor of the month OS /home partition having all the hidden .files and .directories for its configuration.
Reasoning:
I can therefore install another OS or Distro and just format and install to 2 partitions. I still have all my documents and files in a separate shared partition.
Issues:
1. I understand why they made the configuration files in /home for multiple users, but when someone wants to keep trying out different things it causes problems. 2. I don't want to place my files on my NAS. I have the same issue. My config files are saved in the NAS/home/and I can't share it without headaches. Doesn't solve my issue. 3. A symbolic link (soft) won't work since it will not update itself if files are moved.
4. Drop Box won't solve my issue and just take up space. 5. Syncing the /home/ folders between the two would take double the space. Just an issue with videos music and pictures. 6. If I make any changes won't this causes issues with the operating system and applications placing .config and defaults to the wrong place?
Solution I can't figure out how to process:
1. Save my .config files on a separate partition.
2. Making a link for each folder from the SUSE or Flavor of the month's /home folder to the storage /home folder located on a separate partition.

I tried to install on an Armari Gravistar machine Open Suse 11.3 and 11.2 at 64 bit but both haven't worked, after the welcome I press install, it loads something and then the computer is on the screen black and nothing happens. The 11.3 at 32 bit installs but in this manner I cannot use the 16GB RAM of the machine.

I've got some old drives using pre-LUKS loopback encryption, and I'm having problems mounting them on OpenSUSE 11.3. What I expected to work, based on past experiences with other distributions, is something along the lines of:
mount -t ext3 /dev/sdc11 tmp -o loop=/dev/loop1,encryption=AES256. When I try this I'm asked for the password, but then get the message "ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument". Anyone have a clue what could be going wrong, or how I can best access these drives from OpenSUSE?

that's it! I got OpenSuse 11.2 and the size of the Repo has exceeded the 4 GB limit. This means that the mirror doesn't fit on my USB-stick anymore, nor would it fit on aDVD-RAM/RW (thus I can't distribute the updates anymore). Yes, there are bigger USB-sticks and BR-RWs, but in the end it is pure insanity!

I'm having trouble installing the latest openSuSE 11.2 32bit using NFS. The issue appears during the text-interface, before switching to the GUI. The first strange thing I noticed after mounting the ISO is the change in User/Group-IDs. Earlier versions don't do this:
Code:
# mount ./openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586.iso /images/suse11.2 -o loop
# ls -lah /images
dr-xr-xr-x 7 root root 6.0K Dec 1 2006 suse10.2/
dr-xr-xr-x 8 root root 6.0K Jun 10 2008 suse11/
drwxr-xr-x 8 98 98 6.0K Nov 6 16:21 suse11.2/
drwxr-xr-x 8 98 98 6.0K Nov 6 14:14 suse11.2_x64/
When starting the installation process on the client system I get a "No repository found" message. Checking the error console (Alt+F4) shows:
Code:
SQUASHFS error: Minor/Major mismatch, trying to mount a newer 4.0 filesystem
SQUASHFS error: Please update your kernel
Older Versions (11.0, 11.1) are working OK. This error is suspicious since it remains after deactivating the NFSv4 in /etc/sysconfig/nfs and commenting out the NFSv4 export lines in /etc/exports.
Here's my /etc/exports:
Code:
/images/suse11 *(ro,root_squash,async,subtree_check)
/images/suse11_x64 *(ro,root_squash,async,subtree_check)
/images/suse11.2 *(ro,root_squash,async,subtree_check)
/images/suse11.2_x64 *(ro,root_squash,async,subtree_check)

I just installed openSuse 11.2. I added extra repo's like packman and Mozilla. I gave them priority level 80. The normal openSuse repo's have priority level 99.Still, Yast does not show newer versions from Packman or Mozilla.Yast completely ignores the prioritylevels of the repo's.The only time Yast shows packages from other repo's, is when they are not in the default repo's, like XMMS,w32codec-all, etc.So the repo's are added in the right way,but something strange happens in software management.
When I search for firefox, it shows the old version 3.5.6-1.1.1.When I click on the tab versions, I see that version 3.6.0-1.2 is there from openSuse buildservice. Why is Yast not showing the higher version (available) in the mainscreen? When I select it manually, Yast complains about dependancies because it is not aware of newer versions of mozilla xulrunner.

Trying to encrypt my partitions for swap, root and /home directories. However, when I go to partitioner and select the drives as sdb1, sbd2 or sbd3 and click on the encryption. It errors with a -3016 error. Can't find anything in the release notes or the security documentation that would lead me to why this screen is popping.

I really do not know how to phrase this question properly. I am quite unaware of the PC jargon. But I have Ubuntu as the main OS and Mandriva is the second OS on the same hard disk. The boot loader is the Ubuntu. When I want to switch to Mandriva, on boot up I press Shift and then select the kernel. However, if I am on Ubuntu and want to run an application which resides on Mandriva, how do I do that? My fstab file does not even mention Mandriva. However, the file system does show up that file and I can open any files I need by clicking on GUI "Places". But when I try to run any of its applications by clicking the appropriate file on its /bin file nothing happens. A pop-up window briefly flashes and disappears. So my questions are:
1. First how can I change directory so that I am on Mandriva. Can' cd ...something' take me to that file because I see it in "Places" as a 36Gb file system?
2. How can I run an application which resides on that file system e.g., R or Octave which I do not have installed on Ubuntu, without rebooting into Mandriva.
3. Can I do this from command line.
4. And finally, can I do the same from Mandriva i.e., access Ubuntu from it.
I did read quite a bit about mounting files and fstab, but the fstab does not show the file system I am talking about. These are the outputs from Ubuntu os.

I'm wondering how I would go about dual-booting Ubuntu with openSUSE installed first?
I'm just a little bit concerned about the versions of Grub overwriting the openSUSE version or theme or something.
Would it work okay if I just shrink my openSUSE partition and then set the Ubuntu installer to install Ubuntu to the free space only or do I need to edit the grub file and stuff?

I know it's possible to to have multiple distros on one hard disk, and set it up so you can just have one /home partition and use it for all of the distros on that system. My question is, how efficient is that? Does it bloat the /home out with a whole bunch of stuff that might slow a particular distro down because it's filled with stuff from another? (I.e configs). And let's say I have two distros that are of different bases, say ubuntu and arch, does this make a difference? I know obviously that my personal files will all be accessible and not matter which distro they are being read from, but I'm talking more about the hidden stuff.

1. Fedora 14 has a user friendly disk encryption setup. However, there doesn't seem to be an option to change the encryption parameters during setup. Since I can handle the overhead, I would like to change the encryption algorithm and the key length for the default install.
2. I have created an additional encrypted drive (the entire HD) which claims to have its own encryption functionality (Seagate Constellation 1TB). Does Fedora use the built-in encryption mechanism by default? Is there any way to tell?
3. I can't seem to find any utility to tell me what the actual key size is for different HD's I have encrypted. "cryptsetup --help" seems to print out only the information for the default encrypted O/S which is the default 256 bit.
My problem is whether the -s option work when set to a 2,048 bit key length? Or, does it fall back to a 256 bit key length if it fails to do so? Or, does it automatically use the built-in encryption of the hardware? If the -s option doesn't work with a 2,048 bit key setting, can the kernel be recompiled to do so?

Quote: The importance of security should never be underestimated. The consequences of losing data can be disastrous for any organisation. For example, the loss of a single unencrypted laptop may have huge repercussions. This could include breaching data protection legislation with the risk of a significant fine, a loss in the confidence of an organisation, as well as the risk that sensitive data may fall into the hands of a competitor or third party with malicious intent.
