General :: Compile Drivers To An Existing App?
Nov 13, 2010
I have found a complete guide on how to compile drivers to an existing application. I have setup a virtual machine, and already stuck at first point.
(here's the guide: http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?topic=1232.0)
would anyone be kind enough to guide me through this? I can't even get mkdir too work. lol

I want to have UNIX or Linux on my laptop but I found that the wireless did not work on all the ones I tried. I have not tried again for over 6 months but don't have the time to experiment. It took me a week straight last time, I tried PCBSD (8.1), Ubuntu, OpenSUSE (11.3), and various others. The laptop was just released then, so I can understand why all the drivers might not have been compatible then.
I am hoping someone else has successfully added a distribution and can tell me which.
LAPTOP: Dell Inspiron M5010 (15R) [not to be confused with Dell N5010, which is the Intel version]
Here is my hardware (from Speccy):

This probably isnt the correct place to put this, But I can hardly understand how this forum is organized. And forget blogging, I dont even know what that is, let alone how to make one.
Anyway i see tons of requests for installing the ATI drivers in linux, I can only help with the debian based distros.
This was originally posted here http://www.mepis.org/node/13647
Quote:
Finally, after many days of research on how to install Ati proprietary drivers on Mepis 6.5 with 3D and dual-monitor enabled and my Radeon x1950Pro I have come to a successful install and i will share my method below.
My system specs are below.
I read a lot of documentation and tried many guides on Ubuntu/Mepis forums with no or limited results until I found a guide on a french Ubuntu forum that guided me to success.
I had to modify the guide to my needs since it was aimed at installing on Ubunto 7.04 Feity Fawn. Since Mepis 6.5 is based in part on Ubuntu 6.06 the core parts of the guide were adequate.
If you follow every step to the letter eveything should work right away, and fast. (Make a backup of your xorg.conf before you do this!) Make sure your monitor(s) is setup or detected properly in xorg.conf
So here it is customized, adapted and translated to english:
1)Go here and download latest ati drivers: [url]
In our present case these are:
Quote:
ati-driver-installer-8.36.5-x86.x86_64.run
2) If you tried installing previous versions of fglrx Use synaptics search function and remove everything with "fglrx" in its name before we start.
3)Open a console
Here is a one liner you can use that does everything above in one shot:
4)Reboot PC (Will probalby be command line logon with no GUI (X))
Login to your user and then su to root and enter: aticonfig --initial or in my personal case
aticonfig --dtop=horizontal --overlay-on=1 --force-monitor=crt1,crt2
I noticed on some of my tests that sometimes the xorg.conf files dissapears during this process. Seems like a bug. In such a case restore your backup and repeat the aticonfig routine.
type
reboot
5)When you are rebooted you will have a working gui but no 3D acceleration yet. So open a console and su to root
kwrite /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Add:
To the end of your xorg.conf
CTRL-ALT BACKSPACE or Reboot
Test in console as root and you should have 3D
fglrxinfo

I've been running hostapd for a while in 11g mode with great success. Having upgraded the router machine to maverick today, I had a poke at getting hostapd working in 11n mode without too much fuss. From cursory reading of old forum posts, this appears to now be built in functionality without needing to compile drivers or hostapd from source - this is borne out by a few 11n-related lines in the default configuration file.
When adding those two lines to my config file, though, I get the same error message I did a few years ago when trying this out for the first time:

When I left work yesterday I left vim open with the files I was working on. I'm working from home today, so I VPN'ed in and when I go to edit those same files, I get the warning that there's another current vim session open with those files. I know I could just force logout my other user, but that would kill the existing vim session. I think my changes would all be saved in the .swp file. Instead, is it possible for me to take that existing vim session and open it with my second login? That way it would for sure preserve all my changes, and I wouldn't have to open all the same tabs again.

I recently ran across a client that wanted me to set up a new IDE Drive in his existing Red Hat Server. I reluctantly agreed to try. I am completely uneducated in Linux and could use some input. The server itself appears to be set up in text mode as all that I see is text after the initial boot up screen goes away. It, at present is set up in an old dell machine on a 3 Gig drive and all he wants is to be able to add a secondary drive to extend storage capacity. What do I need to do to prepare the drive and OS to accomplish the task? The secondary drive is 120 Gig. I reformatted the drive, as a fat 32 and installed it into the machine. The board sees it. The network does not

If I start a script that is going to take a long time, I inevitably realize it after I've started the script, and wish I had a way of doing some kind of alert once it finishes.
So, for example, if I run:
really_long_script.sh
and press enter...how can I run another command once it finishes?

I've been asked by my professor to add the list of users to a linux server (not sure of the OS type I think he said debian) but anyway. He gave me this script to add users.
Code: #!/bin/bash
# Script to add a user to Linux system
if [ $(id -u) -eq 0 ]; then
read -p "Enter username : " username
read -s -p "Enter password : " password
egrep "^$username" /etc/passwd >/dev/null
if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
echo "$username exists!"
exit 1
else
pass=$(perl -e 'print crypt($ARGV[0], "password")' $password)
useradd -m -p $pass $username
[ $? -eq 0 ] && echo "User has been added to system!" || echo "Failed to add a user!"
fi
else
echo "Only root may add a user to the system"
exit 2
fi
I need to see if I can get this script to read a file that list the usernames and their passwords using the pipe command (or some similar command) so I can just do it in one batch. I've done some searching but there are so many vairiations of the code that I've confused myself. Also, I'm not too familiar with linux, it's been a few years since I've used it but in the prior script, I need to add the users to an existing group named "forensics". Which line would I change/add in order to do this?

I have an existing Dell Precision 690 workstation setup to dual boot Windows XP and CentOS 5.5. These operating systems are installed on two separate drives. I have a grub menu on the Linux drive with it set as drive 1 and points to the windows boot info on drive 2.I tried taking the linux drive and installing it in a new HP Z800 workstation to see if I could be lucky enough to get it to boot, but it didn't. Immediately after it starts to boot I get a few errors. Here is what the system shows:Right after this message "Red Hat nash version 5.1.19.6 starting" I get the following lines:
"Unable to access resume device (LABEL=SWAP-sda2)

I administer a small network of computers connected to a windows 2003 server. The machines Dual boot Windows XP and CentOS 5.
My question is this. The machines are being upgraded to HP Z800 workstations. These workstations come with 2 1TB drives setup on a hardware RAID0. Can I install Linux on these machines, using the RAID0? Can I do an install as if it was just one hard drive? The machines came with Windows7 and I'd like to keep it intact including the RAID0. Can I do the install where it resizes the partition, adding the linux partition to the "drive".
If I can't use the existing windows RAID0 to install CentOS I was thinking of just installing another hard drive in the machines for it. This brings up another question, what would happen if I moved my Linux drive from one of the old workstations and put it in the new workstation, would it boot? I know windows wont boot like this because of the hdd controller drivers and I have a sneaky work around for this anyway but am not wanting to transfer the windows installation.

I want to move my windows XP image from my old PC's C: and put it onto my new PC, with Ubuntu 9.10 already on it. Will this procedure work?First I'll burn an iso image of the windows C: to a CD or DVD, using the Win XP computer. Then, I'll load a (live Ubuntu), from my thumb drive and boot into my new PC, and move the Ubuntu partition to another location, in order to create the partition needed to install a Windows OS. I know that Windows, God bless them, needs to be first on the HDD. This procedure will destroy the grub loader. Then rebooting should load correctly to the grub bootloader, right?

I have a 120GB HD that I installed my linux-mint distro to and have been using for a while now, maybe a year or so. However, it has been running great so I haven't paid much attention to the actual install. Recently, I have been getting notifications of very low disk space remaining. I ran gparted and discovered that there is a very large extended partition that doesn't appear to be mounted. Can I just boot into a terminal, set a mount point and be on my way or will this hurt my existing installation? What is the safest set of steps to mount this partition since it looks to be the swap space as well?
Code:
Here is output of fdisk for the drive:
Disk /dev/sdb: 122.9 GB, 122942324736 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14946 cylinders
