I'd like to use one of the popular USB wireless modems for Internet access. If Linux supports this, I assume that the required driver is in the kernel, and that connection would be automatic. Has anyone had experience with this?
View 5 RepliesI created a Virtual WebServer (I used CentOS as guest) by using VirtualBox to test my website. When I typed "/sbin/ifconfig" to get "inet addr" it showed 192.168.56.101. I used a web browser from my host (Fedora 14 GNOME) to access 192.168.56.101. It was good, It displayed "Apache 2 Test Page". But I accessed 192.168.56.101/mysite it redirected to 127.0.0.1/mysite and showed error page.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a strange problem. I'm using Ubuntu server 10.04 LTS and I want to setup a system with 2 network interfaces: eth0 and eth1. However eth1 does not come up at boot I have a screenshot of my /etc/network/interfaces file I don't see what is wrong. eth0 gets it's adress from DHCP eth1 gets a static adress. When i try to restart networking it quits with this message "don't seem to be have all the variables for eth1 inet" Can anyone point out what I'm doing wrong? if i do 'sudo ifconfig eth1 192.168.3.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up' eth1 comes up

It is going to be set up next monday and I opted to not purchase their DSL modem (I wouldn't be there when it would be delivered and it would have been stolen most likely) So, anyone know of a DSL modem compatible with AT&T DSL that will work that I can pick up at a chain store? I have the following scenario:
- Two ADSL USB modem correctly recognized by Linux.
- pppd configured with two different files, one for each ADSL (even if the two ADSL have the same parameters). Those files are /etc/ppp/peers/adsl1 and /etc/ppp/peers/adsl2
If I attach only one modem and then launch "pppd debug call adsl1" or "pppd debug call adsl2" everything works fine.
If instead I attach both modem in order to have two ppp interfaces, ppp0 and ppp1 I get the following behaviour:
- When launching "pppd debug call adsl1" the first modem connects correctly.
- When launching "pppd debug call adsl2" I get:
connect(8.35): Address already in use
That's because either adsl1 and adsl2 are trying to use the same modem.
So the question more specific question is: How can I specify which USB modem to use in pppoa ADSL connections?
With dialup modem it is possible to specify /dev/ttySx in peers files, but what about ADSL USB modems?

I would like to say first and foremost that I have tried to lookup what I can find about this thing I am doing and most of the time all I have found are either un-replied posts or vaguely explained answers but here is what I want to do.I want to setup a small gateway for my new office using two 3G internet providers offering Huawei usb modems. So I would like to have two internet links active per time and have one LAN consuming from the two links. I have seen the phrase Load Balancing all over the place but they all show their examples using ethernet and static IP's. My providers give DHCP ip addresses so is there anything I need to know and can anyone point me in the direction of some tutorial or howto i can follow to do this?

When i plug in a new modem, all the attached modem is automatic go offline ( thus my connection is down), and try to redial back, sometime the redial is successful, sometime it's not.
It was working fine in ubuntu 9.10, plug in a new modem, all attached modems stay connected.

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Vostro 1520, replacing a non-functional Vista OS.
I'm currently connected via ethernet cable but would really prefer not to have to be.
My Network Manager Applet 0.8.1 when moused over displays "networking disabled". Left-click yields "No network devices are available". Right-clicking shows the option to enable networking but it's blacked out.

I moved my server and network equipment, and now the wireless works but I cannot get my server online. I host a website, so this is kind of urgent.
I have a wireless router and can access the internet fine on my laptop. My server is wired & connected to the router. It sets up the networking properly.. ifconfig has an ip address, the default gateway is present. But I cannot ping google, or even the router. It says destination host unreachable.
So I go back to the laptop to check the router settings.. sometimes it likes to assign the server the wrong internal ip. But, I can't access the router settings either! The page (192.168.1.1) times out. Same with trying to ping the router. How can the laptop be online if it can't reach the router?
Oddly, ifconfig on my laptop reports an ip address starting with 99.233. It's always given me an internal address starting with 192.168. What's going on here? Is the router not allocating an internal ip? I use wicd to connect, if it's relevant.
We have a windows laptop that can only get a "local connection". Now it does sound like the router is forwarding directly to my laptop, instead of allocating internal ips.
I have upgraded Intel Core2 Duo (Macbook Pro laptop) system to Fedora 15. I believe I have the proper firmware driver installed for my wireless network adapter. In Gnome I can click on the network status icon and select my wireless network, however nothing happens after that. Fedora does not prompt for my wireless network password, and no network connectivity is established. What can I do that would get my system to connect to the wireless network?

However when on the wireless network, i cant access the wired shares. Windows laptops can however access them, but directly entering the share name ( \share-name)

Currently I have a HP G62 Laptop and it's been great but recently I've started getting really inconsistent wireless access. When I boot up the computer - it will connect to the wireless and work for awhile but 10-15 minutes later, websites stop loading entirely so I have to restart to get it to reconnect. If I don't restart and disconnect/reconnect... it doesn't do anything, it shows it trying to connect and then a weird "hiccup" happens and it tries again until it finally decides that it cannot connect. I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu I believe.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Debian installed on my laptop. When the laptop is connected to the network via ethernet cord, I can ssh into it fine. However if I switch to wireless, I can no longer SSH in.
I have confirmed SSHD is running.
I am switching between wired/wireless by editing /etc/network/interfaces and re-booting the laptop.
The laptop can connect to the internet, and SSH into other computers on the LAN just fine with either connection. But they can't connect to it when it's wireless.
When it's wireless, the laptop can SSH into itself as well.
My iptables is set to allow everything.
They're both on the same subnet.
What is the role of the /etc/inet.d directory in a system restart.

I have my current PC connected via Ethernet directly to my house router. Now on this Motherboard, I also have a wireless nic that I have no plans on usin. Can I turn it in2 an access point/wifi for other devices like iPods, Wii, Labtops, ect?Also, how would I do it if not Wifi, use the other Ethernet port to plug up say a labtop. In which the labtop uses the net I am getting from the router?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHere's the issue: from time to time I have to take away my son's access to the internet, so I exclude his laptop from my wireless Linksys router. Works like a charm, or it did until he discovered that my neighbor also has a wireless router, and hasn't secured it.
So my son sits in the corner of the house closest to my neighbor and uses their internet.
Is there any way I can tell his laptop to NOT access a particular router? Or even better, to only access my router?
I am building a CarPC which I'd like to have wireless internet access on. I have Verizon phone service so if there is a Verizon air card (not wireless card, an air card so I can have constant access without having to search for hot spots) that would work with Fedora 10 I would be very happy. Also, I should have mentioned that @ the interface for the Sonicwall it said that "no DNS server had been specified", but I set it up for DHCP, and I thought my ISP is using PPPoE (which I also thought used DHCP).
Running Ubuntu 9.10 Ive just got my wireless connection working after first having got the wired eth0 connection working.
With the wired connection I could SSH into my server through my firewall/router (via a forward). I can run up VNC, from there firefox, browse the web - all is well.
I have now setup the wireless connection, using a static IP, and I can likewise SSH into my server. I can run up VNC. I can ping my router. I can log onto it via VNC. I can browse to my router. But I cant browse the internet.
But I cant ping google.com. The reason is there is no host lookup service. Nslookup eventually says no servers could be reached.
So specifically, if I ping www.google.com Im told "unknown host". If I do an NSlookup on it I get timeout, no servers could be reached. However if I ping 66.102.11.104 I get responses.
I see no relevant entries in my firewall log.
Unfortunately I cant traceroute because the package isnt found - and of course I cant install it because I have no internet !
Strangely (to me at least !) if I then tunnel through SSH and browse the web, I have no problems. It works ? I know I am browsing through my SSH tunnel because whatsmyip gives the IP of my router at home, not where Ive SSHd in from. I can surf just fine.
why I cant do host lookups any more (and this did work with my wired connection, but whether its related to my change to wireless, or static IPs or both I cant be sure - it certainly appeared to happen at the same time). And, more to the point, what I need to look for/do to rectify it ?
As a bonus Id be interested in why I can SSH and browse via tunnelling but not direct from my server (via VNC). Just for interests sake !
