View 1 Repliesextended sata partition shrunk at 15 partition limit, how to re-enlarge i hit the 15 partition limit, forgetting it now exists for sata drives, thinking i would add more. upon creation of the 15th, it squished the end of the extended partition to meet the last logical partition, leaving a large unallocated portion after the extended partition, which seemingly nothing can be done with, just sat being wasted space. i have since deleted a few of those partitions, but so far have still failed to find a way to recoup the unallocated space back into the extended partition.

if necessary, i'll do it the painful long winded way of backing up and starting the extended partition again from scratch, but i really rather wouldnt have to do that. i'm sure there must be a way of telling the extended partition to once again reach the end of the drive.

I ran a program under WINE and when it terminated, suddenly lots of programs were running with tiny fonts, including Google Chrome, Unison, and PLT Scheme. I think what these programs have in common is they all use GTK. I am running Debian Linux without a Gnome desktop. As suggested on the web, I put this text in ~/.gtkrc-2.0:

Unfortunately this change has had no discernible effect.
How can I escape the land of tiny-fonted ones?
I want to increase the size of my Linux partition (yellow and highlighted in image), which is situated in an extended partition, along with my biggest partition.
When I try to select the options from any partitioning software (EASUS, Paragon, Gparted) the option to resize is not available (or can't enlarge).
For example in the Paragon Hard Disk Manager, I can't add free space before the partition, even if I first shrink the "G:" partition, then try to enlarge the one with Linux.
Do you know what's happening here? Why am I not allowed to resize the partition?
I noticed today I downloaded the amd64 netinst ISO for 'testing' and during the installation, it warned me of a the fact that I was installing using the 2.6.30.x kernel and I am now attempting to install a 2.6.32.x kernel. Is this is a common warning because I have never seen it before. I got it with both the netist & the businesscard image. Has anyone seen this before and is this a problem? Just trying to understand whats going on under the hood. I don't have the error in front of me since I am on my phone away from the office.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the full desktop .iso and burnt it to a pen-drive. Firstly I installed it on my main laptop and it runs flawlessly. With the Aspire One however, though it boots into live mode and works well, after installing and rebooting all I am left with is a flashing prompt in the top left hand corner. I left it for up to an hour thinking it may be slow to boot as its a fresh install but nothing. I booted again into the live distro and checked my hard drive. As far as I can tell everything is there. So Ubuntu installed which made me think the problem was with grub. From the live cd I installed grub using the commands:

>sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/0d104aff-... /dev/sda
I rebooted but now I only have the grub prompt. When I type boot I get a warning saying that the kernel needs to be installed first. So why is 10.10 not booting? What else can I do to fix this problem?
I am an old Debian user, ho just reinstalled it again to see how it evolved since my las version (3.2). I am sharing it with Arch Linux, And decided to let bot of them. I am using GDM compiled and configured in Arch, and removed GDM2 from Debian (i just like the easy menu.list from the old GDM). The problem is that when i update the kernel, it didn't fing GDM and drops an error message. I tried removing the distro-preconfigured Kernels, as i compiled my own 3.0.0-rc2 Kerenel, but i cant delete the previous ones. Now everytime i do an install or uptgrade, apt-get drops wastes some time, and drops an error message:

What can i do? i googled some similar errors, but where just messed up mirror.lists, or similar, i know it isnt the cause of fail.

Reboot to old kernel 2.6.26-1 the said warning doesn't popup. Reboot again to kernel 2.6.26-2 and after login no kernel failure warning popup. I did it twice. IIRC I encountered this problem before.
I recently did a fresh install of current and once I had it up and running I compiled a fresh 2.6.33 kernel using my old config file, but now I get this warning durning boot, specifically during module loading WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/sound, it will be ignored in a future release. This doesn't seem to be causing any problems but I am curious to know what the message meams? I checked /etc/modprobe but everything looks normal.

I have a VPS server with 512 MB memory. The php.ini is set so script memory limit = 16 MB. However, I have noticed in my top report, instances like the following:

The bold number of 6.4 is the % of sever memory this process is using. 6.4 % of 512 MB of memory is about 32 MB of memory, so it appears that this isn't being limited by php.ini. Am I correct? This leads to the next question: Is there some way to limit the amount of memory a single suphp process can use? (Basically, something like the setting in php.ini which limits suphp processes in the same way.)
I do not know if this is really something I should worry about. I am running Debian testing on my laptop (HP Pavillon dv6). Today, the aptitude update---aptitude upgrade gave me a new kernel (2.6.39). However, if I boot with that kernel, I get a warning (do not know if that is the way I should call this) telling me that the machine failed to get the i915 symbols so turbo graphics will be disabled.I have not done any serious test, but at first sight I do not notice any difference performance-wise with respect to the previous kernel. what am I supposed to do to fix this?

I used mkinitrd to build an initrd from the slackware 2.6.37.6 sources. Lilo throws the following: "Warning: The initial RAM disk is too big to fit between the kernel a the 15M-16M memory hole. It will be loaded in the highest memory as though the configuration file specified "large-memory" and it will be assumed that the BIOS supports memory moves above 16M."
Also, I am running swap, / and home on an encrypted volume group. When the initrd boots (but prior to mounting the encrypted vg) I get a message saying that no modules are found-sounds like a daft question but is this expected? I expect that this is because initrd is looking for modules, but can't find them because the relevant partition isn't mounted.
I recently enlarged my Root and Home partitions and in the process was left with 1.69 GB of unallocated space next to Swap(see image). Not quite sure how it happened this way but for some reason I was unable to grab all the unallocated space available when enlarging either Home or Root. What I am wondering is there any reason why I couldn't enlarge Swap and thereby use up that unused 1.69 GB? Would there be any minor advantage to this? Also if I did this would it simply be a matter of booting from Live Disc and running GParted with Swap off and grabbing that space?

View 6 Replies View RelatedFirst thing I do is double click the top of the window to enlarge it and when I do that the window enlarges correctly, but it also lunches an app like the double click lags behind to click on an app after the window enlages, im using the 64bit version.
If u dnt knw wat I mean please try it out and tell me how I can fix this, just double click a sized window to make it fullscreen and tell me wat happens.
I also would like to knw if maybe its the fact that im using the 64bit version and that its glitchy.
The one thing that I can't learn to do is to expand the canvas size. So if the ratio is 3x2, I want to add extra white space to make it 3x3. If I use the -geometry function, it enlarges the image to the proportions I want, but it loses the aspect ratio.
If you turn to page 377 (or 388 in PDF) of the User Manual, under "Montage", you'll see that ImageMagic can do what I want. The thumbnails in the example image are all of different proportions but the alloted space is 1x1 for all.
However the documentation on this function is pretty bad! Does anyone know how to do this?
I am trying to grow my array to make full use of my drives. I have a raid 6 using mdadm on my home server. The array used to consist of 6 1.5TB drives when it was created. Since then I've been replacing the 1.5TB drives with new 2TB drives. And now I have replaced the last 2 drives.
When I added the first 3 disks I did not use the whole disk for the raid partition but rather made it the same size as the 1.5 partitions. As it turns out this may have been a bad idea. (But it gave me another 3 partitions of 500GB that I turned into 1 disk using mhddfs.)
Now I'm trying to grow the array. I've been testing in a virtual enviroment on how to do it but I cannot find another method than this :
1) fail 1 disk.
2) re-partition the disk with the size of the whole disk.
3) re-add the drive as a spare.
4) start the now degraded array to let it resync.
5) wait quite a while. (aprox 5 hours)
6) start again from step 1 for the other disks.
7) use mdadm with grow command to enlarge the array
use resize2fs to fill array to max size
Now although since this is a raid 6, I keep some redundancy but I still worry about degrading the array so manny times and rebuilding the whole thing. I mean I read the thing out 3 or 4 times over doing this.
