Ubuntu :: After Reinstall/upgrade No Touchpad - No Wireless?
Jun 22, 2011
This may actually (likely is) be two issues. But since both are happening since I did a reinstall (my term I think you all call it a upgrade 11.04-11.04) I thought I'd lump them together first.
My dell Inspiron mini has (of course) a touchpad and the wireless adapter is AR9285. The touchpad is not being recognized (although in a brief boot up into windows 7 it is fine there). I've tried adding backports, as I found in the documentation, but I'm lost. The wireless adaptor is being identified but the network is being shown as unclaimed. It too worked in Windows, so I'm fairly sure that although both worked fine after initial install, something was lost in the recent upgrade.
My problem is I don't know what to do for either issue next. Most of the documentation is on earlier Ubuntu releases (not 11.04) and I am not ready to backup in order to do a clean install right now. I have a new install I'm cleaning up and a clean reinstall that I just finished and am reloading backed up files onto. I'm hoping I'm missing something simple on this one...just once that would be really nice! So any quick answers? Do I need to split them into 2 issues and post elsewhere?

I recently upgraded Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 and my wireless stopped working. It can detect that there are networks around, what their signal strength is, and then try to connect to one, but it just keeps connecting. After around 5 minutes, this stops and nm-applet says no network connection.
After I try to connect, dmesg is spammed with hundreds of the same message. I can not post these here, as I am writing from a different computer and I have no internet access from my main computer. Also, there is nothing in interfaces.conf other than lo. For some reason, my card is referred to as both wlan0 and wmaster0, with this changing depending upon where I look. Most interesting of all is that, even after I reinstalled 9.10, wireless is still broken, even though it wasn't before. It also used to work under liveCD.

This weekend I did a distribution upgrade to Karmic, but it didn't go very well. Upon reboot, I see a white ubuntu logo on a black screen. I hear the speakers pop, and the screen flashes several times, sorta like the blank screen is maybe changing video modes. After a while I see what I think is garbled text but is unreadable, and it looks like I can log on even though I can't read anything. Now, booting into recovery mode gets me to a readable prompt. There are no upgrades to apply. Typing gdm from here gets me to the desktop just fine. Also when booting, if I choose an earlier kernel the system boots fine also, except the touchpad doesn't work.

After upgrading to -current (using slackpkg), my touchpad scrolling won't work.I remember that this had solved my problem previous time and in fact, after upgrade I have changed nothing (since this file already existed there). When I check the /usr/share/hal/fdi/ policy/ 10osvendor/ directory, I see that no "11-x11-synaptics.fdi" file was present. I just copied the file from /etc/hal/fdi/policy into this directory, but this did not help. Can somebody guide me through this?

Should I upgrade from 8.09 to 9.10 or does this require a clean reinstall? If the latter, then how do I go about doing this as I dual boot Win XP and Ubuntu?

obviously natty is flawed. I upgraded as an option in ubuntu studio's update manager. not sure if studio was ment to be upgraded to natty but it was in the manager, as studio is still 10.10 maverick. regardless the results have been disastrous. i am running into problem after problem as apparently many users are.
i had recently done a fresh install of ubuntu studio maverick which seemed perfect. as i was still setting up and restoring until i noticed the option for natty. so while i'm still at it i think i'm going to reinstall 10.10 this is the first imperfect ubuntu upgrade i've experienced but linux still rules.

My Dell Latitude 2100 worked fine with the pre-installed Ubuntu 9.04. I upgraded to 9.10 and the touchpad stopped working. Restored to factory condition and it again worked fine. I re-did the upgrade, this time asking it not to delete the obsolete items.

on my netbook I have a Debian unstable/sid system. A few days ago I did an apt-get (dist-)upgrade which I think also updated the X-Server. Since then my netbooks keyboard and touchpad are not working as soon as the desktop is started (I think gdm).
The Keyboard works during the Grub selection and also in recovery mode (Root Terminal), so I'm sure its not a hardware problem. Could it be that the X-Server unloads the kernel modules for those two devices? Also if I plug in a USB keyboard or mouce they are working.

I'm using debian testing with cinnamon. After upgrading the kernel to version 3.17.2 (but I've also tried the 3.17.3 and 4) the synaptics touchpad died, as if it doesn't exist. I can't go back to the old kernel because the new one has solved a problem about freeze during the shutdown process, so I need it. Note that even with Mint 17, after upgrading the kernel, the touchpad stopped working in the same way.I believe that the touchpad is not seen , rather than loaded .xserver-xorg-input-synaptics and multitouch are installed.$ synclient
Code: Select allCouldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?

I initially had W7 starter on this netbook, changed to linux mint 8 very quickly (as fedora seems to have bricked my old laptop ), and eventually decided to try fedora again. However, unlike on LM8, the touchpad and Wireless LAN do not work.
Netbook Model- Acer Aspire One D250-1515
Wireless Card- Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter
Touchpad- unknown (how can I find this out?)
These two issues kind of make the netbook rather useless as a mobile device.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS. My laptop is an HP Pavilion TX1210AU (TX1000 series). After disabling the touchpad using the toggle button and reenabling it again, it stopped working. I tried restarting my laptop and the mouse worked again only up to the Login Screen. After logging in to my account, the mouse froze again. I tried making a new account and tried logging into it (I'm using it now) and it's now fixed. Does Ubuntu change any user settings everytime the touchpad toggle (on/off) button is switched? Maybe I could just reenable it myself.

I wanted to upgrade qbittorrent to the newest version. So I went to the official website and followed the steps of typing some commands in the terminal. However, it said missing libtorrent-rasterbar5. I went to Synaptic and checked, showing "libtorrent-rasterbar6". Does this mean my version of libtorrent-rasterbar is too new?
And I've removed something regarding qbittorrent because I wanted to install rasterbar5. I searched for rasterbar5 in the Net and downloaded it. It connected to the Ubuntu Software Centre automatically but it showed unable to install.
So I thought I failed to upgrade qbittorrent. I just wanted to install the original version (v2.4.0). I did it like the first time I downloaded qbittorrent. Open the Ubuntu Software Centre and search for it and press "install". It failed! Because a type of repositories named "qbittorrent" showing conflict.
I've dealt with a similar problem regarding GIMP successfully before. But I can't remember.

I have a home server running Ubuntu 10.04. I want to replace the motherboard and CPU without reinstalling the OS. I read a long time ago that this would sort of work on Windows XP, but with stability issues. However, I have a hunch that on a modern Linux there shouldn't be any problems.

Had a working WinXp/Karmic dual boot system. Tried to upgrade Karmic to Lucid and my daughter rebooted the system during the upgrade. I decided to do a fresh install of ubuntu, leaving Windows in place and it succeeded until the end when it said it could install the bootloader, so I proceeded without. I meant to say "it said it couldn't install the bootloader, so I proceeded without.
On booting, Grub drops to the command line.
I get grub>, not grub-rescue>
I did ls in grub and it showed the partitions I expected
/sda5 is /boot
/sda6 is /swap
/sda7 is /
/sda8 is /home
I tried to follow the grub2 command line manual by entering
Code:
set root=(hd0,7) (success)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic root=/dev/sda7 ro (failed - couldn't find file)
so I'm now a bit stuck.
Here are my bootinfo_script results (by the way, sdb is just an e-SATA hard disc with nothing installed on it, I don't know why bootinfo thinks Windows is there. Windows is on /sda2 with some sort of backup/recovery partition on /sda1)
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
Boot Info Summary:
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
partition #7 for /boot/grub.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb .....

I gave up trying to figure out the problem and just reinstalled 10.10. Anyways, did the reinstall, installed all proprietary drivers and STILL NO WIRELESS. Seriously, what the heck is going on? Again, computer is HP Pavillion dv2500, using 10.10, and the wireless driver is the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver. I previously had access to the Internet, so I really don't know what could have changed.

I upgrade to fedora 9 from fedora 8. After upgrading I still gets F8 modules appear when I used system update. It seem that my Fedora 8 installation has a know bug that updates are halted, and this problem is not resolved during OS update. Since I have not install any other software yet I would like to make a clean installation of fedora 9. How can I remove the fedora 9 from my hard drive and make a fresh installation?
I use GRUB as a boot loader and have window install as well.

I have a Fedora Core 6 web server I've been testing. Everything was working fine(http, mysql, etc) until I installed Shorewall. After a reboot, now I get "(NONE): LOGIN" From what I've googled on this, this isn't an uncommon error, but I don't see any consistent way to correct this issue. Everyone just says boot single user and change roots pw. But thats where I run into problems. When I log in single user mode and try to run "passwd" to change root pw, I get "module not found". I've tried running vi(vim) to edit /etc/passwd but I also get an error about a library file missing. So, I'm at the point of thinking about reinstalling FC6. I'm assuming I should upgrade to a new version of FC. If I do this, will it "break" http and mysql? What version would be safest to upgrade to from FC6? Would it be better to just reinstall FC6 on top of whats there?

I will be version-upgrading a friends (Ubuntu only) laptop very soon. It is 9.04 now and the new version will be (ideally) 10.04.1 The machine has a large unused area on the hard drive and who has known this situation was to use the uncommitted area to do a complete new install of 10.04.1, leaving the 9.04 unchanged (useful insurance). Then, copy, paste (?) the /home directory from the 9.04 into the newly completed installed 10.04.1 overwriting the installed directory.
Opinions seem to support the notion that such a paste into 10.04.1 is likely to be successful and trouble free as long as the 10.04.1 installing username is the same as the 9.04 username with same privilege level. I would be grateful for comments here, particularly with any details, gotchas, you can see.

I did a few things to the drivers and the wireless aspect of my ubuntu system and I'd like to know how would I reset everything back to as if it was a fresh install (but only regarding my wireless drivers and all that jazz)?
I'll have to purge it and then reinstall it over a wired network.

Buying a media pc to attach to LCD TV and want to install Linux and not Windows7 on it. I also want to purchase the Rapoo 2900 Touch Slim Wireless Keyboard with TouchPad to use on this system. Any recommendations or opinions with this type of wifi keyboard using any Linux distro? I was thinking of using a Debian based distro (aptosid, Ubuntu) but not sure what the wifi/hardware support is like when it comes to drivers?

I've been searching forums like for 2 days, but couldn't find any similar problem.
First of all im running Ubuntu 10.04 desktop version on my netbook Acer aspire one (AOD150)
Every time i turn off my netbook and after turn it on, in "Hardware drivers" it says that driver for wifi is not in use, also button for switching on/off wifi is not working.
So everytime i start up i have to go into "Hardware drivers", remove driver for wifi, and then activate it again. And everything is working gr8 after. Its just too annoying to do it everytime.

Nothing when I try to use the wireless though.

Are there any minimalistic virtualisation solutions available at the moment for this sort of purpose? Or even better a linux distro just for this?
