I am a happy user of Slackware 13, but there is an annoying problem with ALSA (or anything else??) on my system.Sometimes (rather often) only one speaker of my system plays music.I use plain Slackware 13, without /etc/asound.conf and ~/.asoundrc-- ALSA restart /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa doesn`t help-- muting/unmuting the mixer doesn`t help-- Rebooting the PC helps - most of the times1. )My Card is

Yet another Linux newbie with wireless problems I'm afraid. I saw some postings that appear very similar but I don't have any Linux experience and don'h to make uncontrolled changes to the environment without expert advice. Background: I have an old laptop (HP Pavilion dv9000) with Vista installed and a troubled history (overheating motherboard failure), so I put it on the shelf and replaced it with a new Windows 7 laptop (Dell Studio 1555). But I have been intrigued by the Ubuntu reviews and thought I would dig out the old laptop and install Kubuntu 11.04 (replacing the 2 Vista partitions with a single Kubuntu partition).
Kubuntu installation was easy and I am impressed by the Kubuntu interface, but I soon noticed that it was not detecting my wireless router, which works fine for everything else (Dell, Sony Bravia TV and also an internet radio). The wired connection is okay (using it now) so I guessed the problem was Kubuntu notognising the Broadcom BCM4311.The network interface tool shows the wired connection but the Wireless tab is greyed out.I also installed Wicd Network Manager but that just confirmed what I knew.I noticed other threads have asked for the lspci and lsusb details so here they are:

My audio is working, but when i put my usb speaker in it, it doesnt redirect sound to the speaker, just continues to play from the laptop.
In gnome, System->Prefernence->Sound shows the following:
Device: HDA ATI SB
Device: Logitech USB speaker (Alsa Mixer)
lsusb shows:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:0a04 Logitech, Inc. V20 portable speakers (USB powered)
dmesg shows:
[ 1530.060050] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
[ 1530.229080] usb 2-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=0a04
[Code]....
my usb speaker has volume control-up/down, mute, that seems to work, just no sound coming out of it. I am running Squeeze 6.01, kernel 2.6.32-5-686 Also I have 2 computers with squeeze 6.01 installed, both doesnt output usb sound, but the speaker works fine with winXp and ubuntu.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10. everything is ok except with internal speaker in my HP Compaq dc7900 Convertible Minitower PC. audio is coming through headset but not through internal speaker. what might have gone wrong with my system. but it is working with windows 7 ultimate. i'm using dual boot. i have installed the same ubuntu 10.10 64 bit in my laptop DELL Inspiron N4010, with this everything is fine. but i have problem with hp desktop internal speaker. what should i do?
I have observed one thing that in SYSTEM >SOUND > OUTPUT Connector has only two options 1. Analog Headphones 2. Analog output.but in my DELL Inspiron N4010 one more option is there "Analog Speakers".

I recently installed Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. It is working well, but Movie Player does not work, and Dragon Player plays videos/movies but with no audio. VLC works fine. how to either remove Movie Player and Dragon Player or make them work. I tried apt-get remove mplayer but that doesn't work. If not that, I wonder if the default media player can be changed to VLC, e.g., when you click any video it will start to play using VLC?

This may seem like a stupid question (if not completely ridiculous ), but I was wondering if there's a way to configure audio events so that I can use a wav/ogg sound instead of the PC speaker's default beep for small events like hitting backspace in a text editor when it's the beginning of the document (or any other illegal keyboard action), or in Wine applications when it calls for an "asterisk" sound (it just beeps the PC speaker).
I've looked at similar threads, but they mainly just talk about either the beeps that the machine does when it boots up, or simply turning off the beeping completely. What I want to do is substitute the beeps (that are caused by the OS) for an actual sound that's played through the ALSA/OSS/whatever audio device.

My workstation has a built-in speaker that, surprisingly, plays audio very well. I also have external speakers hooked up to the audio out jack which are easier to hear. Unfortunately, when I try to play some audio material, sound comes out of both the external speakers and the built-in speaker on the workstation.
I'd like to disable the speaker inside the machine, and just plug in head-phones to the external speaker so I can listen to training material at work without bothering my office mate. I'm not sure how to do this in Linux (Suse Enterprise Desktop 11). Fiddling around with the Gnome audio tools doesn't list two different audio devices on the machine.
From what I can tell, sound is played through the ALSA system. I looked in my home directory and there is no .asoundrc controlling configuration.
I should also add that I check in the BIOS for a way to disable the built-in speaker, but I could not find such a setting.

My university uses 802.1x Dynamic WEP, with PEAP, MSCHAPv2, and no CA certificate. Our IT department actually provides instructions for Ubuntu, and they work, but I can't get it to work in Kubuntu. Here's the instructions using the Gnome Network Manager applet:
- Change the LEAP setting to Dynamic WEP (802.1x).
- Change the Authentication setting from TLS to Protected EAP (PEAP).
- Leave the Anonymous Identity option blank.
- Leave the CA certificate setting to None.
- Change the PEAP version to version 0 if running 8.10, or Automatic if running 9.04+.
- Leave the inner authentication setting to MSCHAPv2.
- Enter your username.
- Enter your password.
- Select OK. A warning message will appear about having no certificate; click Ignore.
- Click Connect.
I'm using Kubuntu 10.10. All the same settings are there for the KDE plasma network manager applet, but the connection always fails immediately. How do I go about debugging this? Is there a way to test this out from the command line? (WiFi in general works fine, on regular WEP and WPA secured networks; just having trouble with this one).

I usually use Ubuntu, but installed Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Fedora (xfce). However, none of these three will boot into the desktop! Xubuntu and Fedora-xfce seem to boot, but before it loads the desktop the screen stays black and nothing happends. With Kubuntu, it loads the login screen but every time I try to log in the screen goes black, then it returns to the login screen again. It will just keep doing this until you reboot or shutdown.
I cant see any type of error messages come up and my current install of Ubuntu (11.04) seems unaffected.Does anybody know what is happening here? is it a common bug/problem or something no one has really heard of before? Im just really stumped and cant seem to get anywhere with it,

I have bought a laptop 2 months ago with pre installed windows7 and installed Ubuntu 10.04 64bit but still didnt get sound from the speakers. With headphones everything is OK . I have unmuted everything and searched forums but nothing so far. In windows I get speaker sound so it is not hardware problem. In alsamixer it appears I have 2 soundcards, one HDA -intel (chip Realtek ALC272) and a second one HDA nvidia ( a virtual one propably from my nvidia VGA ) that lacks controls . With lspci -v , it appears both use the same driver :Kernel driver in use: HDA IKernel modules: snd-hda-intel . Tried to disable the first one from bios but it didnt help I also tried sound adjustment in preferences -> sound and gnome-alsamixer, nothing. From gnome alsamixer, when I mute speakers, the headphones also get mute so may be the system doesnt recognize speakers and headphones separately? May be it has to do with config files but my linux knowledge is low.

I installed kubuntu over ubuntu (both 9.10) this morning. in the past have had problems with suspending my laptop on ubuntu, so i tried on my new kubuntu. it entered suspension, but when i came back, all i saw was the login screen and the mouse. But nothing worked. It was just frozen. So i did a forced shutdown (held the power button down till it cut off). When i started it up again, there was no audio, no startup jingle. I restarted about 3 times. Here is the output of lspci:
Code:

I'm building a new system, and yesterday I tried to install kubuntu, but could only get it running using the nolapic option (noapic is not nescessary, and noapic without nolapic won't work). Now I have the system installed but can only get it running using nolapic and therefore without SMP (which is a no go for most people, including me).
When I try to boot without nolapic, the system goes just fine through loading the kernel and kubuntu (that is, until the end of kubuntu's loading screen), but when it's done with loading it displays the login screen and freezes completely. No input or activity whatsoever. Sysrq keys seem not to work either.
I've searched for similar problems but had little luck so far. I'm using a ga-p55m-ud2 mobo, core i3 530 (2 cores with HT) and an HD5770 (if this is relevant at all). I was hoping some of you experienced users could suggest some kind of workaround to the problem (maybe the kernel is configuring the lapics towards a lockup?) or instruct me as to how could I know what the system was doing right before stopping, in order to locate more specifically what's the problem.
I've never used linux as my main operating system (trying to migrate to it now), but I have some notion of it, even though I don't quite know how everything works, so I might not be familiar with some commands or parts of the system operation.

I am running Kubuntu 10.04 with KDE 4.2.2. I have a problem with "BackingStore", which does not preserve the contents of a window created by another program (actually PAW, producing a histogram). I have created a small xorg.conf, just containing this code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "VMware SVGA"
Driver "vmware"
Option "BackingStore" "true"
EndSection
The contents of the created window is indeed preserved when putting other widows over it and removing them again. This was not the case without the xorg.conf above. Without this file the content covered by another window is not redrawn after shifting the obscuring window.
However, the content is cleared when I switch to different virtual screen and then coming back to the original one. So Backingstore is not working between virtual windows.
In my old 8.04 installation (with KDE 3) everything was fine with the backingstore: Switching between virtual windows did not clear the contents!

I've just completed switching both my laptop and desktop from Ubuntu 10.04 to Kubuntu 10.04, all seems to be working well, except that I can't get my Virgin Mobile HUAWEI E160E wireless broadband modem working. I used to have it working flawlessly in Ubuntu, I've used the smae step as described in this post: [URL] that worked for me with Ubuntu, but the Wireless Broadband tab is greyed out under the manage connections dialog. I'm running the 64-bit version of Kubuntu BTW.

Until 10.10 the NetworkManager applet/widget has not been able to:
- edit the default "auto eth0" network profile
- create/edit system wide network profiles (wired, wireless, mobile broadband)
The networkmanager itself can do it, of course, since long. The GNOME/XFCE counterpart also used to work flawlessly since long.
