Until 10.10 the NetworkManager applet/widget has not been able to:
- edit the default "auto eth0" network profile
- create/edit system wide network profiles (wired, wireless, mobile broadband)
The networkmanager itself can do it, of course, since long. The GNOME/XFCE counterpart also used to work flawlessly since long.
Is there a way of wireless networking without using the Gnome NetworkManager Applet? I want to connect to the Internet using a USB 3G modem and connect to wifi without knowing all of the details of every network.Network manager is pretty good but there seems to be no way of using it without starting an X session and it doesn't play nice with any other networking tool and reminds me too much of a Microsoft application.

I looked in the package manager and apparently I don't have the gnome applet for networkmanager...but everything else I seem to have (the git version not svc or w/e) Anyone know if installing the applet will let me choose my wireless network and connect to it? Right now I think so, but what I have to do is boot into windows, find the package on the web and download it, then boot into fedora and install it
where I can find the fedora 10 networkmanager-gnome package (git version for x86_64)? I looked around and found the svc version and a git version for i386, but my OS is x86_64 and I couldn't find any git versions of it for 64-bit fedora's. btw, I have no idea what git and svc mean, but when I tried to install the svc version, it told me I had to install svc versions for all the other networkmanager packages...
My networking seems to be OK but when any changes are made the NetworkManager Applet 0.7.996 (I think) in the panel pops up a small window ~ 300*80 pixels which displays some faint coloured lines and dotted lines where, presumably, there should be a message of some form. How can I configure it to get the message?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a FC10 installation with GNOME and NetworkManager and a wireless card. Everything works ok. However, when I try and setup gdm to do autologon I get the NetworkManager applet asking for the password for the gnome-keyring to get the wireless details. Since I want to use this machine as a sever this is unacceptable as I won't be around to type in the password. I tried the solution at [URL] but this does not work. I still get the password being requested and the keyring password is the same as the logon password. Can anyone say if there is a workaround that works to get the NetworkManager to be able to read the gnome keyring without having to prompt me for it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot).Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:
Computer: Dell Inspiron 1318 laptop
WiFi Chip: Broadcomm BCM4238
Kernel Version: 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64

I just upgraded (as a fresh install) to Fedora 13. In so doing I kept the old /home partition. My NetwokrManager Applet is missing from the top bar. But if I login instead as a different user, then it is there. When I did the install, I had to create a (new) user as part of the process. The old passwd file had two users, one called admin, and the other myself. I logged in initially as the new user, and created the admin user keeping the same home directory, user ID and group ID. I then logged out, logged in again as admin, and removed the new user. I then added myself as a user keeping the same home directory, and user and group IDs.. For some reason admin has the applet but I don't. I also don't see how to add it except as a custom laucher using nm-applet, and that didn't seem to work.

Just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and I have to say it feels great.Only gripe I currently have is the NetworkManager that is starting up very slowly. When I have logged into KDE KNetworkManager applet says that NetworkManager is not running and hence I have no network connection. This is fixed if I start NetworkManager (as root) or just wait a couple of minutes. I have one ethernet interface only, no wireless

My university uses 802.1x Dynamic WEP, with PEAP, MSCHAPv2, and no CA certificate. Our IT department actually provides instructions for Ubuntu, and they work, but I can't get it to work in Kubuntu. Here's the instructions using the Gnome Network Manager applet:
- Change the LEAP setting to Dynamic WEP (802.1x).
- Change the Authentication setting from TLS to Protected EAP (PEAP).
- Leave the Anonymous Identity option blank.
- Leave the CA certificate setting to None.
- Change the PEAP version to version 0 if running 8.10, or Automatic if running 9.04+.
- Leave the inner authentication setting to MSCHAPv2.
- Enter your username.
- Enter your password.
- Select OK. A warning message will appear about having no certificate; click Ignore.
- Click Connect.
I'm using Kubuntu 10.10. All the same settings are there for the KDE plasma network manager applet, but the connection always fails immediately. How do I go about debugging this? Is there a way to test this out from the command line? (WiFi in general works fine, on regular WEP and WPA secured networks; just having trouble with this one).
I've just completed switching both my laptop and desktop from Ubuntu 10.04 to Kubuntu 10.04, all seems to be working well, except that I can't get my Virgin Mobile HUAWEI E160E wireless broadband modem working. I used to have it working flawlessly in Ubuntu, I've used the smae step as described in this post: [URL] that worked for me with Ubuntu, but the Wireless Broadband tab is greyed out under the manage connections dialog. I'm running the 64-bit version of Kubuntu BTW.

When I add the folder view widget to the desktop again so I can see my desktop iconsthe widget doesn't show my icons unless I click on it and they drop down. Without clicking on it, the widget shows the desktop icon (similar to the "show desktop" icon)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Squeeze and I'm looking 3 days now for a solution in some weird problem. The NetworkManager Applet shows that there isn't connection although I am connected. The icon has this small "x" and when mouseover it says "No network conncection". Moreover when left clicking it, it says
"Wired Network Device not managed"
While I was looking for the solution a came across this post by an Ubuntu developer who says:network-manager-applet displays the connectivity state of network-manager's managed interfaces not every interface. So the title "network manager says disconnected but is connected and working" is actually misleading. The interface is connected and working but not from network-manager's point of view since it is not managing the interface. Additionally, in Lucid now network-manager applet displays nothing now for non-managed interfaces so is less misleading. You can check to see whether or not an interface is managed by network-manager by using the command line too nm-tool. You'll see "State: unmanaged" for unmanaged interfaces.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to natty last night, and everything is working fine except for the network manager. I can enable and configure the wireless card via bash, but the network manager widget will not manage the wireless card.
When I first boot up, the "Enable wireless" check box is greyed out. After I enable the card via the terminal, the "Enable wireless" check box becomes ungreyed, but every time I click it, it instantly unchecks itself. I feel like Currly from the Three Stoogies. Check, uncheck, Check, uncheck.. "Slaps face repeatedly."
I just updated to a new Kernel, in Squeeze. So far everything seems to be working properly but NetworkManager. It shows that I am not connected but I obviously am because I am posting this thread. When I click on the icon in the bar by the clock, with active applications, it does not show any networks available, even though I have wireless and networking enabled

There is that twisted "N" symbol: clicking on it gives no response (but the mouse cursor is changed when over the menu bar).
Sometimes (not always(!), no pattern found when) the little cell phone symbol in the tray is there although hidden in a sub menu. There I can activate networkmanager but I then get a popup saying that network is already running do I want to start it by hand or automatically? Nothing happens clicking on either choice.
Starting from command line has no visible effect and no errors printed.
How should the connection be established? Where can I enter my parameters? (This is a 3G mobile connection).
On fresh install of 11.4 everything worked fine, but after some updates networkmanager stopped working properly on my netbook (intel atom n270 based).When I log in, network manager shows that networking is disabled and I can't connect. Checking/unchecking the checkbox does nothing. All settings in Yast are OK.To make it work, run "/etc/init.d/network restart" and then plug in the wire OR (in case of wireless connection) I restart network from console, unchecck and check the checkbox in networkmanager and only then it starts to work as it should.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed Linux for the first time and I'm having some internet connection issues. I am running Linux Mint 9 on my HP 210 netbook. I am unable to connect to anything using NetworkManager 0.8's automatic configuration. I can't even ping my other computer. Both computers are connected to my cable modem by a switch. The other computer (the one I'm on right now) is running Windows Vista and is working fine.
eth0 is getting an IPv6 address assigned to it, but no IPv4 address. When I do dhclient (I'll include it at the bottom) it says no DHCPOFFERS received and then makes another adapter called eth0:avahi with an IP of 169.254.9.78, which I think I understand from what I read is just a default.
I noticed when I looked at the ipconfig results from my Windows computer that there were a number of things called tunnels on there. My ISP is cox, and I saw some other people with cox had the same setup. One of the tunnels seems to make it so IPv4 and 6 can coexist. Could that be a problem? When I asked Cox why it was set up that way they helpfully referred me to wikipedia.
Here are my ipconfig (from windows), ifconfig, and dhclient results. Let me know if I can provide any other information.

I've run into a situation where knetworkmanager tells me networking is disabled. If I switch to the ifup method in Yast then I can get online but when I switch back to user controlled knetworkmanager tells me that networking is disabled.I've actually had this happen twice.The first time I somehow managed to get it working again (I thought it was by right clicking on the icon in the system tray). This time I don't see the same option.Has anybody got any suggestions on how to get knetworkmanager working again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am currently running openSUSE 11.2, but I do not like the KDE4 interface. I downgraded everything back to KDE3, but kept the KDE4 artwork. The NetworkManager program under KDE4 works fine and can connect to my home wireless network. However, The previous of NM cannot cannot connect to any wireless network.
I find it kind of odd, since KNetworkManager is just a frontend to the real NM, with was not actually changed when I downgraded.
I managed to kill KNetworkManager today and I'm not sure what I did. This is a netbook running openSUSE 11.4 with all updates applied and KDE 3.5 (from the openSUSE repository). Normally, I use knetworkmanager to connect to the Internet. Everything was working fine this morning and today I decided to apply whole disk encryption (using cryptsetup and luks) to it.
So, I backed up the files, encrypted the partitions, made some adjustments to /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst, and copied the files back. Everything is working fine, except for knetworkmanager. When it goes to connect, it starts off with the "gray Earth" (to represent no connection) and then it switches to the "connecting" icon for a fraction of a second, and then it's back to the "gray Earth". Looking at the output of iwconfig, it hasn't connected to the router at all (the essid is blank).
The connection works fine using ifup. I tried using cnetworkmanager (the console version) and it spits out errors like this:

I thought for a second that maybe it was because i had added the unity ppa to the repository but i removed that and i still have no more dockbarx in the awn applets. i can add the applet but it won't appear in my AWN which is a shame because i was really liking the thumbnail window previews.
View 3 Replies View Relatedif there is someone who asked the same question, but I have the Ubuntu 10.10 net-book remix version, and every time that I go to try to download and install the Java applet, it will download Ok (I think), but when I try to open the file, there are no errors, but it won't open. When I try to re-download, it does nothing again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have no idea how I managed this, but I am able to connect to the internet but NetworkManager doesn't show any connection. This means that until I kill it, I cannot log in with Pidgin, because it is waiting for a connection.
Do I disable NetworkManager completely or do I try to make it recognize that I am connected to the Internet? If the latter, then how should I go about? (Please let me know which files I need to show you, because I know I've messed around with a couple).
