Software :: ALSA - Sometimes Only One Speaker Working?
Oct 18, 2009
I am a happy user of Slackware 13, but there is an annoying problem with ALSA (or anything else??) on my system.Sometimes (rather often) only one speaker of my system plays music.I use plain Slackware 13, without /etc/asound.conf and ~/.asoundrc-- ALSA restart /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa doesn`t help-- muting/unmuting the mixer doesn`t help-- Rebooting the PC helps - most of the times1. )My Card is
I'm running Fedora 12 and at some point about a year ago my ALSA just stopped working. After posts, trials, etc, no joy. Now, after a few more months, and further F12 updates, I'm trying to get back to it.I have:
Code: [root@DadPC ~]# cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.
I would like your input please. I'm using an HP DV7 laptop and the sound works under Opensuse 11.2 but without base. I have therefore updated ALSA to version 1.0.22.1 to make use of the introduced base switch for DV7 (ALSA changelog here)
I have tried these ALSA options but without any change / improvement to the base sound. options snd-hda-intel=hp-dv5 and also hp-dv7 and hp_dv7 options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 Any ideas?
The second line stops the sound from "stuttering" but the first seem to have no effect.
Every time I boot into my laptop, there is no sound. Going to alsamixer in a terminal shows that the "Speaker" volume is constantly getting reset to 0, and bringing it back up fixes the problem. How can I get Alsa to remember to keep the speaker volume above 0?
I have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it's called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it "resets" all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned. For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome's panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. How to prevent this? Do you have any clue? I had not any problems with this in openSUSE 11.1. Alt+F2 not working with Emerald decorator Screens go black after 10 minutes or so in openSUSE 11.2
We have a target board with intel atom processor(COM). OS : Ubuntu 9.04 But I am not able to hear the Internal speaker sound. ->pcspkr driver is present. ->Different tests were conducted inclding echo -e "a" , console-beep package ,writing to the port etc. ->Sound is not heard during system startup also.
I just install Kubuntu 9.10 everything is work find but my logeitech usb speaker. It says its on defualt and it not muted. I can also see the volume go up and down when I press the buttons on my speakers.this is what I get when I
aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1
My audio is working, but when i put my usb speaker in it, it doesnt redirect sound to the speaker, just continues to play from the laptop.
In gnome, System->Prefernence->Sound shows the following: Device: HDA ATI SB Device: Logitech USB speaker (Alsa Mixer) lsusb shows: Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:0a04 Logitech, Inc. V20 portable speakers (USB powered) dmesg shows: [ 1530.060050] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3 [ 1530.229080] usb 2-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=0a04

my usb speaker has volume control-up/down, mute, that seems to work, just no sound coming out of it. I am running Squeeze 6.01, kernel 2.6.32-5-686 Also I have 2 computers with squeeze 6.01 installed, both doesnt output usb sound, but the speaker works fine with winXp and ubuntu.
So sound from the speakers on my laptop (hp mini 311) quit working randomly. I either installed an update or just rebooted and it quit working. The sound from the headphone port still works but that is annoying.
Here is some information about my hardware. Code: *-multimedia description: Audio device product: MCP79 High Definition Audio vendor: nVidia Corporation physical id: 8 bus info: pci@0000:00:08.0 version: b1 width: 32 bits clock: 66MHz capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0 maxlatency=5 mingnt=2 resources: irq:23 memory:d3100000-d3103fff
There is no audio output coming from the inbuilt speakers. when headphone is connected, audio is available with headphone. But not with the internal speaker when headphone is not connected.
I have installed Ubuntu 10.10. everything is ok except with internal speaker in my HP Compaq dc7900 Convertible Minitower PC. audio is coming through headset but not through internal speaker. what might have gone wrong with my system. but it is working with windows 7 ultimate. i'm using dual boot. i have installed the same ubuntu 10.10 64 bit in my laptop DELL Inspiron N4010, with this everything is fine. but i have problem with hp desktop internal speaker. what should i do?
I have observed one thing that in SYSTEM >SOUND > OUTPUT Connector has only two options 1. Analog Headphones 2. Analog output.but in my DELL Inspiron N4010 one more option is there "Analog Speakers".
Running songbird, have been just fine for months, now every time I try to play a file I get "autoaudiosink and alsasink are missing." I can cure this by following the "Getting the ALSA drivers from a *fresh* kernel" instructions in the comprehensive sound solutions guide. But I have to do this *every time* I restart my computer. How can I fix this permanently?
I have an HP-dc5800 computer, and my internal speaker was not working, no matter what i did. However, i could get sound with headphones. Here is what i did to fix it. It may work for you.
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Add options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 enable_msi=1 to the end of the file. I changed model=hp-m4 to model=hp-dc5800. So, changing the model to the model of your computer may work. Underneath that, i put in; options snd-hda-intel enable=1 enable_msi=1 single_cmd=1 power_save_controller=1 here is a list of some of the models. http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentat...dio-Models.txt
My audio was working just fine up until today, when I was working on some audio production stuff. I did QjackCtl, and also ran pulse-jack so I could use another app not in jack. Now, upon a boot up, there is no gnome-volume-control-applet or gnome-volume-control running. When I run gnome-volume-control it says there is no sound device (without Jack running). When I do it with Jack and Pulseaudio running (doing QjackCtl and pulse-jack), gnome-volume-control shows info about jack, but no hardware. I have sound, I just can't affect it volume-wise, etc. When I run pacmd I get this:
$ pacmd Daemon not responding.
When I close QjackCtl I then get an error in a window that says merely: Waiting for sound system to respond.
I was having a problem with ALSA, installed OSS, but now nothing works. I want to remove OSS, and reinstall ALSA. I am thinking about reinstalling, but I have all my stuff on here, so don't really want to.
At least, I think it was the update that broke it. Anyway, my sound was working fine yesterday. I have gone through this thread to try and fix my sound, and it appears that my sound card has been uninstalled.

Last time my sound wasn't working, I was directed to this thread. The script from this thread might work again, but if it will just be erased after every update, I'd like something a bit more permanent.
After updating my system today, sound stopped working. VLC said I should update alsa-lib. Slackbuilds had none to offer, so I got the sources from http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page. It compiled and installed without problems, but the error from VLC states the same. Is my system the only one affected by the update, and how do I fix it?
My internal mic on sony vaio was not working on karmic 64bit. After I followed these instructions [URL] (updated alsa to 1.0.22) I got the microphone working, but now mplayer does not play any sound (although it plays files), as it tries to use pulse by default. However when run with -ao alsa, it works fine.
Other than that, the volume control has not effect on the sound, so every time I need to control it using alsamix.
When I remove pulseaudio, everything seems to be working, except gnome-volume-control and gnome-volume-control-applet do not start, and the keyboard volume controls dont work.
Here are the sound cards I have:
Code: progre55@progre55:~$ aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC262 Analog [ALC262 Analog] Subdevices: 0/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with, amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.
I'm at the tail end of my upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and I think this sound issue is the last one I have. As usual I've tried hunting for some answers but it gets very confusing when people are using KDE or PulseAudio or Ubuntu or slightly different configuration to what I have.
My config: Debian Squeeze 2.6.32 Alsa (just because I was using that in Lenny and it was working, no other reason) Gnome Rhythmbox Skype
Skype is pretty good - it has the sound configuration built in, so I say ring the speakers and it does. I say talk to the headset and it does. Rhythmbox is my music player (again just because I was using it under Lenny) however it only wants to play through the headset. I can't seem to get it to play to the speakers attached to the rear port.
Summary of some settings (transposed manually) # aplay -l *** List of PLAYBACK hardware devices *** card 0: Headset (Logitech) device 0: usb audio subdevice 0/1 card 1: Intel HDA device 0: ALC883 Analog
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and I had the sound on my Toshiba satellite laptop working and everything is fine-except for the built in mic..no response at all, I had to switch to windows whenever I want to use the mic "etc, skype calls"I Googled a little bit and upon this adviseI disabled alsa drivers using the commandssudo update-rc.d -f alsa removesudo update-rc.d -f alsa-utils remove and then downloaded oss debian package and installed it, as the advise said. But the result now is that I have no sound at all !! no mice nor speakers...any clue how to fix this ? how to enable alsa drivers again and return to"speakers working-mic not working ?
Recently i put a DAC connected to the CL X-FI board via the SPDIF interface. Result is i can listen only one channel, the left one (hedaphone) while using the xmms, audacious.
The thing is that i'm able to listen both channels if i use the VLC configured with the same output, that is hw:2,4.
I'm trying to update ALSA, following the instructions here: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE.I'm not sure how to proceed at STEP THREE. There are two sets of instructions, based on whether or not the kernel has been updated. I'm not sure if it has been. How can I make sure?
in fedora 10 things were pretty simpler . all i had to do was double click the volume icon and i could change the volume of each of my speakers individually ...
in fedora 11 that was not possible , this adjustment of volume had become more complicated, however there was this "advanced volume control" or something ... i dont quite remember its name , but thanks to that i could still adjust volume of each of my speakers individually ...
in fedora 12 i m not able to find that application - "advanced volume control" ... how do i adjust the volume of my each of my 5.1 speakers in fedora 12 ?
Through the command prompt, mainly wav files, wanted to see if there is any way to get this done? That would be the pc speaker on the board, I can get it to beep at frequencies.
Everything was fine until I upgraded to the Beta 2, now the sound only comes out of my left headphone speaker and stereo speaker. My sound settings are the same and I have double checked them.Anyone else having this issue? Anyone know how to fix it?
I'm not sure what to do. I have a Vostro 1700 with ubuntu Hardy. My soundcard seems to be mal-functioning but I am not certain how to check or what to do about it. My Out jack on my Soundcard works but if i don't have speakers attacked to my laptop I will have no sounds.
I thought the message received sound was too quiet in Empathy 2.32.0.1 and figured out that it was playing the file located here:[URL]...I replaced this file with a more suitable sound file but I have since noticed that the sound is only playing through my right speaker. I don't know if this was happening from the start or if I caused it by changing the sound file.
Playing the sound file manually proves there's no issue with the file as it plays correctly, through both speakers. I have no other sound issues.
