I am using Lenovo Laptop. Initially I had Dual boot with Windows Vista and RHEL 5. I deleted Vista Partition. If I try to install Vista using Vista Bootable DVD, The Vista Bootable DVD is not getting detected! Now I want to remove everything (RHEL 5 & Grub Boot loader) from my laptop and install fresh OS.

When i googled this message it came out that this has got to do with linux (i have never used linux and i formated my disc once or twice since i bought it so i found it very strange that this problem is related to linux).Anyway,i found out that grub is the problem and that it isnt a big deal to solve it.I downloaded Ubuntu,booted it from the cd and followed the instructions...I typed in grub (in the terminal) and it told me to download it so i typed in "get-apt grub install" or something like that and it all went well,i was now in the grub directory.Then i typed " find /boot/grub/stage1" and it told me that the file was not found.
I have tried everything,i have downloaded the super rescue cd the fix the problem but i have still the same problem.
Sup Ubuntu forums, before I begin I would like to say that I do indeed thoroughly enjoy Linux, especially Ubuntu. and I do intend on coming back to it later on down the road.
Okay, so what I want to do is completely remove Ubuntu and the Grub Bootloader and install the Windows Bootloader but I am not so sure how to accomplish said task. I bought my laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it and have since then updated to 11.04. I don't believe windows was previously installed on the laptop but I could be wrong.
I have a Ubuntu 11.04 Live CD, a Windows 7 Ultimate Installation CD, and a Windows 7 Recovery CD.
I have heard that you can remove all the necessary partitions that have Ubuntu/Grub in them through the Ubuntu Installation process but I am not sure which partitions to remove.
I installed opensuse 11.2 today on my external hard drive and everything is running great, but I want to see if I can make a modification to the way my computer boots. I share this computer with others and they are not going to be happy to have to wait for the boot menu to start when they turn on the computer in order to choose which OS to run (Especially since if they do not make a choice it auto runs opensuse after a few seconds).
What I would like is if opensuse can be "out of sight, out of mind" and only load when I put in the live cd and then choose to boot from my external...... is it possible to do this?I am not a computer wizard and do not work in the industry.
I just made my system unbootable... Here is what i did.. I have two sata HDDs

500 GB
I copied entire 160 gb as an mirrored image to 500GB HDD using Acronis Disk Director. I deleted entire 160 GB HDD.. Removed the 500 GB HDD and kept it seperate.. Installed ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Worked a little bit... The i wanted to delete ClearOS.. So i connected 500GB HDD and booted again in Acronis Disk director Formated the entire 160GB HDD.. Copied back the entire 160 from 500GB HDD.. Now my sytem refuses to boot... Just 4 letters "GRUB" appears on the screen... I tried booting using XP CD.. It gives a blue screen.. I tried Windows 7 CD.. It says unable to fix due to MBR problem..
I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.
A few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.
I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.
FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:
dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT
i have windows xp operating system yesterday i installed ubuntu9.10 dual boot when the grub gets loaded it gives me four options as follows
1) linux......
2) linux......recovery...
3) mem test...
4) windows...
when 1) linux is selected it loads ubuntu properly but. but when i select 4) windows a black page with GRUB written on the top left corner of the page is displayed and will not take any command... the only option i can do is hardboot.
I have recently purchased a new laptop, which came with Windows 7 pre-installed. I immediately installed Ubuntu alongside it with a dual boot. At first it worked fine, but when I restarted after the first time I used Windows, I ended up with an 'Operating system not found' error. I was able to reinstall the Grub bootloader using an Ubuntu Live CD, which appeared to fix the problem, but the next time I loaded Windows 7 and rebooted, the problem reappeared I think the problem is that Windows 7, for whatever reason, is somehow removing or disabling Grub.

I want to remove the 11.2 grub and make the 11.1 grub master again, but I do not know where to change this, the MBR points to the 11.2 grub and changing menu.lst probably does not have any effect.

The windows manager I am using is "gnome-shell" that comes as default with Fedora 15. However, I am wondering if I could completely remove this and install a different windows manager, such as Xfce 4.8. I am not talking about completely removing Fedora 15 and then installing Fedora 15 xfce spin. Just the window manager. How easy would it be to remove the gnome-shell windows manager and then install xfce 4.8 windows manager? Any steps to do this?

I wish to temporarily remove the ubuntu disk, however grub cannot load unless that disk is connected. It appears that grub has got to the windows disk and my system was booting from there. I wish to remove grub from all disks, (or at least the windows disk). I tried removing it from the synaptic package manager, but it's still there (but it looks different, maybe another version loaded or something). I'd like to just be able to boot from either disk using my bios boot menu.

The problem is that i have an external disk reader that is only bootable after i booted at least once into windows. So basically i can't boot using either Windows or Linux disks, nor can i boot into the os itself. When i start the computer i get something like device not fount and a long code, then a prompt shows up (Rescue GRUB). What do i need to type here to remove grub and be able to boot into windows?

i had installed linux on my 40 IDE hard disk drive now i want to install xp on then linux, but i am not able to boot any cd now, that grub problem is coming again and again.THIS IS WHAT I DID BUT COULD NOT FIND THE SOLUTION1.I formatted entire hard disk by connecting it to second computer fully formatted took me almost 1.20 minutes to format still nothing happend to that grub problemthe only way i could install xp on that 40 gb ide hd was to connect it to 2nd pc and install xp on it,but then when i connected this hd to first one i could install linux on it but xp was giving some popups windows as now the motherboard had changed on this 1st pc

I tried to reinstall windows vista with the recovery CD delivered with my laptop in order to just get rid of the old installations. The Installation was OK, however when rebooting windows doesn't come up printing the error could not load GRUB Error 22.
Now I think I should remove grub from teh master boot record, and the system will supposedly work.My question is is this a solution and how do I reformat the master boot record? Can I do it with the Ubuntu instalation CD?
Is there any way to simply remove grub? Does GRUB reside in a specific partition? Do I have to just delete the partition that has GRUB on it?The way my bootable partitions work is something like this.
1)Installed Vista
2)Installed Ubuntu
3)Thought I removed GRUB
4)Put in new HDD(1) and installed Win7 onto it
5)Put in another new HDD(2) and put another Win7 onto that (but I disconnected every other HDD so that the bootloader would be written onto the new HDD(2). When I have all my HDD's plugged in now, I get a GRUB load error (I think it's 21).
Basically, I used a USB stick to run ubuntu 9.10 live, then tried to install to an external 500gb HDD connected with a Sharkoon Drivelink USB adaptor. The installation went fine, but I get a GRUB error 21 when booting a lot of the time. I figure this is due to the way in which the drive is connected. I am a complete noob, and I want to just ove GRUB completely and restore my Vista bootloader. Unfortunately, I do not have an installation disk as my laptop didn't come with one, and none of the others I have other PC's are the same version (home premium 32-bit).If you know of a way to fix the GRUB issue/sso I can use the external drive I would love to hear them too, but the main aim of this thread is to help me remove GRUB and restore the windows bootloader. I am trying to install Linux Mint Debian to the second partition. When the installer gets to where you are asked to install GRUB the only option is to install GRUB to /dev/sda which I believe is the MBR.
I decided just not to install GRUB and proceeded with the installation.
How can I install GRUB to the bootsector of my Linux partition?
I want to install grub inside windows 7. I don't want to partition anything neither I want to remove Windows Boot Loader (BCD). I simply want to Use Grub from windows 7 boot menu. I want to do this so for frugal install of linux distros such as puppy, slitaz, etc. I have used WinGrub on Windows XP and it worked fine. But I don't think that will work on Windows 7.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know its not a Linux program but my brother had Linux on his HP DV9000 Laptop, Well he wants to go back to windows XP home edition or what ever, he played around with it and messed something up and when you boot it, it comes up with a GRUB error 22, so I try to boot it with the windows XP CD and when i try to install windows or repair it tells me there is no hard disk... which seems kinda stupid considering your PC needs a hard disk to boot up, so in the BIOS menu i did the hard disk testing and what not and it came back 100%...
