Oct 16, 2010I recently installed Ubtuntu Linux 10.04 and like it but want to go back to Windows. I tried booting from an XP CD-R I have but I got some error while @ a blue installation screen. So I made another CD-R WinXP again (bootable) But same problem. I really want to go back to Windows without messing up my Laptop.

However, I am wondering if I could completely remove this and install a different windows manager, such as Xfce 4.8. I am not talking about completely removing Fedora 15 and then installing Fedora 15 xfce spin. Just the window manager. How easy would it be to remove the gnome-shell windows manager and then install xfce 4.8 windows manager? Any steps to do this?

May 12, 2010The thing is, i'm getting thin on hd space so i have to remove it. I have read that i could just format linux partition and than boot with windows cd and fix motherboard, but i do not have windows cd on me. Can i use another tool, that would allow me to fix the "damage" grub did? Acronis or something like that?
To avoid to complicated answers, just give me a solution that works without criptic linux commands, i get lost in that.
Also, i am actually a supporter of open source and free software, but i also think that linux is nowhere near being easy to use for the general population, no matter the microsofts conditioning. So i guess ill give it a go at 11.00 again to see whats going on

Oct 26, 2010I had Windows. Installed Linux 10.04 over it. I want to switch back to Windows. When I pop in my Windows XP disc I get and error after it loads a bunch of stuff. I tried booting from m 10.04 disc, going into Disk Utility and changing the file system to NTFS no luck. Tried burning another copy of XP and still same error. Now I burned a copy of Windows 7(desperate times call for desperate measures) but its on a DVD-R instead of a CD-R and every time I try to boot it, Linux just boots.

Okay, so what I want to do is completely remove Ubuntu and the Grub Bootloader and install the Windows Bootloader but I am not so sure how to accomplish said task. I bought my laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it and have since then updated to 11.04. I don't believe windows was previously installed on the laptop but I could be wrong.
I have a Ubuntu 11.04 Live CD, a Windows 7 Ultimate Installation CD, and a Windows 7 Recovery CD.
I have heard that you can remove all the necessary partitions that have Ubuntu/Grub in them through the Ubuntu Installation process but I am not sure which partitions to remove.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can Remove Grub So Automatically Boot To Windows
Jun 29, 2010I installed opensuse 11.2 today on my external hard drive and everything is running great, but I want to see if I can make a modification to the way my computer boots. I share this computer with others and they are not going to be happy to have to wait for the boot menu to start when they turn on the computer in order to choose which OS to run (Especially since if they do not make a choice it auto runs opensuse after a few seconds).
What I would like is if opensuse can be "out of sight, out of mind" and only load when I put in the live cd and then choose to boot from my external...... is it possible to do this?I am not a computer wizard and do not work in the industry.

May 19, 2010If you create a file on UNIX/linux with special chars, like touch "la*, you can't remove it with rm "la*. You have to use the inode number(you can if you add the before the name, I know, but you'd have to guess as a user that it was used in the file creation).
I checked the manpage for rm, but there's no metion of the inode number. Doing rm inodenumber doesn't work either.
What is the command for this?

Jul 17, 2010They finally got the MCP89 kernel patch finalized and released as a Ubuntu DVD in the daily build of Lucid Lynx (good job!). I tried it, but even after following Ubuntu's Wiki-guide to fix various problems, a lot of my Mac's functionality broke and I don't want to take up that battle yet (of trying to get everything to work perfectly {I'm a perfectionist}).So I want to remove Ubuntu and GRUB2 from my system. But even with some experience with problems like these, I'm in the ultimate pickle. OS X uses the GUID Partition scheme and EFI, whilst bootcamp has a BIOS/MBR emulator to run Windows. I installed the GRUB bootloader to the MBR (I think {In "/dev/sda" during the install}). I use rEFIt to chainload into GRUB2 to boot Ubuntu, and I want to remove that icon, return to booting Windows 7 using it's own bootloader, and restore the GB's that Ubuntu took back to the Windows 7 partition.
I'm lost and (for the first time in a while) WAY over my head. I have no experience with EFI/GUID. (I just got my first Mac a month ago)

I copied entire 160 gb as an mirrored image to 500GB HDD using Acronis Disk Director. I deleted entire 160 GB HDD.. Removed the 500 GB HDD and kept it seperate.. Installed ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Worked a little bit... The i wanted to delete ClearOS.. So i connected 500GB HDD and booted again in Acronis Disk director Formated the entire 160GB HDD.. Copied back the entire 160 from 500GB HDD.. Now my sytem refuses to boot... Just 4 letters "GRUB" appears on the screen... I tried booting using XP CD.. It gives a blue screen.. I tried Windows 7 CD.. It says unable to fix due to MBR problem..
