Fedora :: Unable To Remove MBR/grub From Encrypted HD?
Jun 18, 2011
I had F15 with hard drive encryption.I am now trying to move this hard drive to another laptop and install Windows.Even after complete formatting, the grub> still remains on this hard drive, which perhaps means that MBR is not wiped out. (Eventually Windows install fails)How can I format this HD as fresh, with single NTFS partition?have tried dd on linux, as well has MiniTool partition wizard on windows for formatting
I am using Lenovo Laptop. Initially I had Dual boot with Windows Vista and RHEL 5. I deleted Vista Partition. If I try to install Vista using Vista Bootable DVD, The Vista Bootable DVD is not getting detected! Now I want to remove everything (RHEL 5 & Grub Boot loader) from my laptop and install fresh OS.
I have a grub menu with a ton of old kernel entries that I want to delete. I've scoured this forum, and haven't found anything that works. I've tried:
Code:"the easiest way to get rid of old kernels from grub is to uninstall the package, the post-install scripts will update grub
for example my current kernel is:
uname -a Linux hemma 2.6.31-16-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 8 04:02:15 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
then remove older kernels found in /boot like this:
sudo aptitude remove linux-image-2.6.31-15-generic" When I tried that, the output showed the package being removed, but nothing was removed from the grub menu. I tried running the kernel I supposedly removed, and it wouldn't start, which is promising, but how do I get it out of the grub menu? I've also tried using Synaptic, but that didn't work either.
I updated through yum tonight had to reboot but it hangs on reboot. Now I can't use my computer.here point me in the right direction to fix this.I have no clue.I really need to mount this encrypted drive but it won't let me this way I can get my files and move them to another os that is working.I put in the password but it will not mount for some reason. My first venture in fedora land does not seem to be going well at all right nowor a page I have work to do and I really don't have time to be reading hundreds of pages to find the right answer.
I have no idea what I'm doing so here goes: I installed Fedora and clicked the "encrypted" box during the process. What I want to do now is "browse" the volume using "File Browser" but I only get messages like, "Unable to mount location, org.freedesktop.DeviceKit.Disks.Error.Failed: Not a mountable file system". Why cannot I not see the files? I have the password. I would like to be able to move, delete, rename, etc files but that seems impossible because I cannot access the drive.
Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen....nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete....system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
I'm trying to automatically remove some of the old GRUB entries that pile up after a few updates and just want to leave live 2 or 3 there along with my Win7 entry. I was looking and saw that there is a utility for Ubuntu but I couldn't find anything for Fedora.
I'm just slightly confused here, but... what the? Why does installing grub-doc remove BOTH grub-pc, and grub-common? So basically it seems like by installing grub-doc, I have uninstalled grub totally (yes, it is still there as the bootloader, but i have no way of updating it now!) from my system. What's the conflict between grub-doc and grub-pc, such that grub-pc has to be removed?
I've recently installed Fedora 12 from the Live CD as a new virtual machine using VMware. The issue I'm having is that when I go into the "Add/Remove Software" package manager, everything is blank. I'm guessing this is probably a proxy issue as I do connect to the internet via a proxy server.
I was recently learning to compile software from source code(tar.gz) files,he instructions told me to extract the files to the desktop. After I did this, I now see the folder on the desktop with the files in it, and I am unable to delete the folder. The error message says "there was an error deleting copying". Error removing file:Permission denied. Has anyone ever experienced this? I've run out of ideas as to how to get rid of it
When I boot into Linux i see some shared memory which is blocked, due to this I am unable to start my processes which needs some shared memory.I tried removing the shared memory using ipcrm -m but no use, the shared memory is not cleaned but its still in use.I tried removing the shared memory using root user also normal user but unable to remove the shared memory.
I have a problem with my debian install. I 've got a laptop with 3 OS:
First I installed windows.
Then I installed ubuntu 15.04 in an encrypted partition, and another partition with /boot (/dev/sda6) created when I installed Ubuntu.
And, finally I installed Debian 8 in an encrypted LVM (/dev/sda8) with 3 partitions (/, /home and swap), and a /boot (/dev/sda7) partition created when I installed Debian.
Needless to say that both /boot partitions are not encrypted
Previously I had a similar configuration with ubuntu 14.04 and Debian wheezy.
The problem is that I can't start the system by using the Debian grub (/dev/sda7). So Ihave to boot the system using Ubuntu's grub (/dev/sa6). The second part of the problem is that when I boot Debian using /dev/sda6 (ubuntu's grub) , plymouth does not work.
I tried purging grub and reinstalling it again with the ubuntu partition mounted, and it did not work.
I did not have this problem with my previous configuration (with wheezy and xubuntu 14.04) ...
I need to re-install grub bootloader, as it was overwritten. The problem is the encrypted partition does not show up using boot-repair on the live_cd. I installed lvm2 and mounted them, but cannot seem to make any progress passed that. I was following this guide.
which run without errors but an attempt to mount throws up the above error as well as saying - you must specify the file type (tried that) - and fails to mount. I've tried using YaST to format and encrypt it which throws up the same error when I run mount but actually does actually mount the filesystem Googling around has brought up info saying that it's probably a race condition brought on by invalid udev rules. I've got a (mostly) working system and the udev rules documentation leaves more confused than when I started.
I have installed 11.2 next to my 11.1 version I have a few big problems with 11.2 and I like to completely remove it. there are 2 grub's active now. I want to remove the 11.2 grub and make the 11.1 grub master again, but I do not know where to change this, the MBR points to the 11.2 grub and changing menu.lst probably does not have any effect.
I am running OpenSUSE 11.3 GNOME, and I recently reinstalled Windows, and it overwrote GRUB. I only have an Ubuntu LiveCD (I installed with the OpenSUSE DVD), how do I get GRUB back? Note that the Ubuntu LiveCD doesn't recognize the LVM Encrypted partition, so I can't mount it.
So I wanted to get rid of ubuntu 10.10 on my HP pavilion dv6 laptop as I wanted to make some hd space. Its a dual boot with windows 7. I deleted the ubuntu partition and expanded the windows partition to fill the whole hard drive again. When I restarted my laptop I got the "error: no such partition. Grub rescue>" message.
I tried inserting my ubuntu 10.10 boot cd but whenever I boot from the cd I get the exact same grub rescue error. Is it possible to remedy this situation from the error? I am currently unable to download a windows recovery cd so I'm stuck in the grub rescue page unless its possible to fix this mess from the error prompt.
I installed Ubuntu successfully using rescue mode on the alternate cd, and let Ubuntu use an internal boot and home. At the final stage grub refused to install to the MBR, and then refused to install to my /boot partition on /dev/sda2. It said: No boot loader has been installed, either because you chose not to or because your specific architecture doesn't support a boot loader yet. You will need to boot manually with the /vmlinuz kernel on partition /dev/mapper/volumegroup-natty and root=/dev/mapper/volumegroup-natty passed as a kernel argument. Returning to debian, I did a update-grub, which detects Windows and Ubuntu:

How do I make grub decrypt the LUKS partition before attempting to load the Ubuntu kernel?
I'm running Debian Squeeze AMD64 with full disk encryption and LVM. After reinstalling Windows 7 I lost GRUB from the MBR. I managed to install GRUB after following this guide and using an Ubuntu 10.04 graphical installation disc, but I only get to a GRUB CLI when booting, so I can't actually choose an OS there.
I tried following this guide but I'm stuck after "# Mount the partitions to /mnt/root" and don't know what to do.
Does anyone know how I can fix GRUB so I get to choose between Debian and Windows 7 there?
now I've re-installed W7 so grub was overwritten. I've tried the procedure which worked for me previously:booting with the netinst usb in rescue mode, choosing a root partition to mount, using grub-install to reinstall the grub:
Now I'm on Jessie (stable), and this time this fails, and I am able to mount only sda3.grub-install doesn't exit so I'm assuming it has been replaced by `grub-installer'. also '/boot' doesnt exist so I created it manually.
i recently did some changes to my hard disk partitonand now linux is in hd0,6when i booted my pc,i got the grub commmand line interfaceso,I think that i need to edit grub.conf in fedora 14then at cmd i did this:
grub> root (hd0,6) grub> kernel (hd0,6)/vmlinuz file not found
I've set up a triple boot xp, vista, and fedora 10. The problem is that I want to remove Fedora grub, so the bios can give me all 3 choices to boot from, be it xp, vista or fedora. At the moment fedora grub boots, from there i am able to choose other operating systems. But I want to use windows boot loader, from there i would like to have windows give me the choice of different OS's to boot from.
Lately I was upgrading from F9 to F10 on my IBM thinkpad, everything looked good and in the end of the uppgrading prosess I got a messages witch told me that my upgrade was successfull and I was asked to reset the computer, but there my problems begin , after reset I only get black screen with the name name GRUB written in the up left corner of the screen and everything stopps there.
I installed windows and haven't been able to boot to fedora since. Without a boot disk my machine complains 'BOOTMGR is missing'. If I use a boot disk to access grub on another linux partition (/dev/sda5) I can try to boot my fedora install using its old grub.conf settings. However this gives me the grub error:
Code: root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-213.fc11.x86_64 ro root=UUID=63608748-e626-4a3f-9232-c836524f606f rhgb quiet
Error 2: Bad file or directory type Darn grub thinks the file system type is ext2fs - this makes me think windows might have written something (perhaps its bootloader) to the first partition rather than the MBR.
I installed windows xp, then wanting it off, I formatted Windows NTFS partition from live cd of fedora. Now PC start with a menu to choose between the two operating systems with a countdown. I tried to clean up the grub file by deleting the last three lines for the MBR but with poor success. I would like to cleaning my Fedora 14 start ...
I have win 7 and F13 installed on my computer but I am having trouble setting up dual boot so I can choose to boot F13 or win 7. I have tried to set up grub, how to install grub and set up a dual boot so I can use F13.
