Fedora :: Unable To Remove MBR/grub From Encrypted HD?

Jun 18, 2011

I had F15 with hard drive encryption.I am now trying to move this hard drive to another laptop and install Windows.Even after complete formatting, the grub> still remains on this hard drive, which perhaps means that MBR is not wiped out. (Eventually Windows install fails)How can I format this HD as fresh, with single NTFS partition?have tried dd on linux, as well has MiniTool partition wizard on windows for formatting

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Remove Old Kernels And Their Grub Entries

Aug 1, 2010

I have a grub menu with a ton of old kernel entries that I want to delete. I've scoured this forum, and haven't found anything that works. I've tried:

Code:"the easiest way to get rid of old kernels from grub is to uninstall the package, the post-install scripts will update grub

for example my current kernel is:

uname -a
Linux hemma 2.6.31-16-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 8 04:02:15 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

then remove older kernels found in /boot like this:

sudo aptitude remove linux-image-2.6.31-15-generic" When I tried that, the output showed the package being removed, but nothing was removed from the grub menu. I tried running the kernel I supposedly removed, and it wouldn't start, which is promising, but how do I get it out of the grub menu? I've also tried using Synaptic, but that didn't work either.

Why cannot I not see the files? I have the password. I would like to be able to move, delete, rename, etc files but that seems impossible because I cannot access the drive.

Ubuntu :: Why Does Installing Grub-doc Remove BOTH Grub-pc And Grub-common

Jan 3, 2010

I'm just slightly confused here, but... what the? Why does installing grub-doc remove BOTH grub-pc, and grub-common? So basically it seems like by installing grub-doc, I have uninstalled grub totally (yes, it is still there as the bootloader, but i have no way of updating it now!) from my system. What's the conflict between grub-doc and grub-pc, such that grub-pc has to be removed?

I've recently installed Fedora 12 from the Live CD as a new virtual machine using VMware. The issue I'm having is that when I go into the "Add/Remove Software" package manager, everything is blank. I'm guessing this is probably a proxy issue as I do connect to the internet via a proxy server.

Debian :: Grub Does Not Work - Encrypted LVM

Jun 3, 2015

I have a problem with my debian install. I 've got a laptop with 3 OS:

First I installed windows.

Then I installed ubuntu 15.04 in an encrypted partition, and another partition with /boot (/dev/sda6) created when I installed Ubuntu.

And, finally I installed Debian 8 in an encrypted LVM (/dev/sda8) with 3 partitions (/, /home and swap), and a /boot (/dev/sda7) partition created when I installed Debian.

Needless to say that both /boot partitions are not encrypted

Previously I had a similar configuration with ubuntu 14.04 and Debian wheezy.

The problem is that I can't start the system by using the Debian grub (/dev/sda7). So Ihave to boot the system using Ubuntu's grub (/dev/sa6). The second part of the problem is that when I boot Debian using /dev/sda6 (ubuntu's grub) , plymouth does not work.

I tried purging grub and reinstalling it again with the ubuntu partition mounted, and it did not work.

I did not have this problem with my previous configuration (with wheezy and xubuntu 14.04) ...

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mounting Encrypted Fs Error : Remove Ioctl Failed: Device Or Resource Busy

Dec 5, 2010

The error message I keep getting during mounting is:-

device-mapper: remove ioctl failed: Device or resource busy

This is from ane external USB HDD I use as a backup device. I've tried formatting it as ext4 ane encrypting it from the command line

# mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdc1
# cryptestup luksFormat /dev/sdc1

which run without errors but an attempt to mount throws up the above error as well as saying - you must specify the file type (tried that) - and fails to mount. I've tried using YaST to format and encrypt it which throws up the same error when I run mount but actually does actually mount the filesystem Googling around has brought up info saying that it's probably a race condition brought on by invalid udev rules. I've got a (mostly) working system and the udev rules documentation leaves more confused than when I started.

Ubuntu :: Remove Grub 2 At Grub Rescue Prompt?

Jan 15, 2011

So I wanted to get rid of ubuntu 10.10 on my HP pavilion dv6 laptop as I wanted to make some hd space. Its a dual boot with windows 7. I deleted the ubuntu partition and expanded the windows partition to fill the whole hard drive again. When I restarted my laptop I got the "error: no such partition. Grub rescue>" message.

I tried inserting my ubuntu 10.10 boot cd but whenever I boot from the cd I get the exact same grub rescue error. Is it possible to remedy this situation from the error? I am currently unable to download a windows recovery cd so I'm stuck in the grub rescue page unless its possible to fix this mess from the error prompt.

Debian Configuration :: Give Grub Access To Encrypted Partition

Apr 30, 2011

My partitions are set up as follows:

[code]...

I installed Ubuntu successfully using rescue mode on the alternate cd, and let Ubuntu use an internal boot and home. At the final stage grub refused to install to the MBR, and then refused to install to my /boot partition on /dev/sda2. It said: No boot loader has been installed, either because you chose not to or because your specific architecture doesn't support a boot loader yet. You will need to boot manually with the /vmlinuz kernel on partition /dev/mapper/volumegroup-natty and root=/dev/mapper/volumegroup-natty passed as a kernel argument. Returning to debian, I did a update-grub, which detects Windows and Ubuntu:

[code]...

How do I make grub decrypt the LUKS partition before attempting to load the Ubuntu kernel?

Debian :: Recovering Grub After Windows Installation - Encrypted Partitions And LVM

Nov 4, 2010

I'm running Debian Squeeze AMD64 with full disk encryption and LVM. After reinstalling Windows 7 I lost GRUB from the MBR. I managed to install GRUB after following this guide and using an Ubuntu 10.04 graphical installation disc, but I only get to a GRUB CLI when booting, so I can't actually choose an OS there.

I tried following this guide but I'm stuck after "# Mount the partitions to /mnt/root" and don't know what to do.

Does anyone know how I can fix GRUB so I get to choose between Debian and Windows 7 there?

Debian Installation :: Recover Grub On A Dual Boot Machine With Encrypted LVM

Oct 16, 2015

My laptop setup is:

sda1: W7
sda2: FAT16
sda3: /boot
sda4: encrypted LVM with debian (everything besides /boot)

now I've re-installed W7 so grub was overwritten. I've tried the procedure which worked for me previously:booting with the netinst usb in rescue mode, choosing a root partition to mount, using grub-install to reinstall the grub:

Code: Select allmount /dev/sda3 /boot
grub-install /dev/sda

Now I'm on Jessie (stable), and this time this fails, and I am able to mount only sda3.grub-install doesn't exit so I'm assuming it has been replaced by `grub-installer'. also '/boot' doesnt exist so I created it manually.

Code: Select allmount /dev/sda3 /boot
grub-installer /dev/sda

The latter fails with
Code: Select all/dev/sda/proc not a directory

Fedora :: Unable To Boot - Grub Error

Sep 2, 2009

I installed windows and haven't been able to boot to fedora since. Without a boot disk my machine complains 'BOOTMGR is missing'. If I use a boot disk to access grub on another linux partition (/dev/sda5) I can try to boot my fedora install using its old grub.conf settings. However this gives me the grub error:

Code:
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-213.fc11.x86_64 ro root=UUID=63608748-e626-4a3f-9232-c836524f606f rhgb quiet

Error 2: Bad file or directory type
Darn grub thinks the file system type is ext2fs - this makes me think windows might have written something (perhaps its bootloader) to the first partition rather than the MBR.
