Yet another Linux newbie with wireless problems I'm afraid. I saw some postings that appear very similar but I don't have any Linux experience and don'h to make uncontrolled changes to the environment without expert advice.Background: I have an old laptop (HP Pavilion dv9000) with Vista installed and a troubled history (overheating motherboard failure), so I put it on the shelf and replaced it with a new Windows 7 laptop (Dell Studio 1555). But I have been intrigued by the Ubuntu reviews and thought I would dig out the old laptop and install Kubuntu 11.04 (replacing the 2 Vista partitions with a single Kubuntu partition).
Kubuntu installation was easy and I am impressed by the Kubuntu interface, but I soon noticed that it was not detecting my wireless router, which works fine for everything else (Dell, Sony Bravia TV and also an internet radio). The wired connection is okay (using it now) so I guessed the problem was Kubuntu notognising the Broadcom BCM4311.The network interface tool shows the wired connection but the Wireless tab is greyed out.I also installed Wicd Network Manager but that just confirmed what I knew.I noticed other threads have asked for the lspci and lsusb details so here they are:

I was told by an experienced Linux user/IT professional that older Broadcom wireless cards had embedded code preventing access through non-Windows OS's. I was told that there were drivers that were basically "hacks" for skirting this issue. I've tried two different drivers and neither seems to be doing the trick. My current driver is the "Broadcom STA wireless driver".

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having a little trouble connecting to my wireless network. Running Fedora 10 32 bit.I'm trying to connect to a hidden wireless network. I updated the firmware for my driver but apparantly the driver is still not working. Broadcom has a driver from their website for Linux 32 bit systems. Should I attempt to install it? I read a post where the driver is built into the system kernel. If so I would need to blacklist the one of the drivers. Correct?

I just performed the newest kernel update to version 2.6.37.6-0.7 (desktop). Unfortunately, there is no update for the compat-wireless package available. It's still the version for kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5. Hence, my wireless is currently not working and I had to pull a cable through my apartment to write these lines. I actually thought due to the change of the very last digit in the kernel version that this should be a rather safe update. But I also had to recompile the modules of the NVidia driver and of Virtualbox. Does anyone has an idea when new compat-wireless modules will be available? Or do I have to re-compile them myself (I never had to do that before and I really hope that I don't have to)? Or is there a trick to make the old modules work?

Everything's ok, wifi without problems, I could connect to anywhere I wanted to, but yesterday while laptop was running and was connected actually by wire to internet, after removing the wire I realized that I cannot connect to wifi (the laptop was hibernated during night) - even the light diode in the front of the laptop was not shining. I went to yast and realized that the wlan0 isn't enabled and there's new eth1 port. But the wlan by ifup I cannot start and the eth1 I cannot start as well.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI think I've read every post here about the Broadcom and connection.I thought I tried everything.Turns out (read Chapter�35.�Using NetworkManager) using Connection Manager (K Network Manager) you can not use, what I wanted to use, 'all users, use connection' or said another way, the wifi would be activated and connected Before the user 'logs in'. Well, as I said, it turns out that if you are using gnome, this will work with NetMgr, but NOT in KDE. If you want to use 'system connect' then you have to use 'traditional' if in YaST2. Oh well, at least 'i'm' connected.... (i'm the only user, so not a big deal right now, but would like to get it working...)

I mean I was connected and everything and the next time I restarted It could not detect any wireless network. I deleted the wireless network card in hopes that the OS will automatically detect it on startup and set it right but NOPE. When I check the hardware information in YAST, it is listed there and it is also working under Windows.

The wifi card is working (tested with other OS's) and the wifi light on my HP laptop is on. I have installed broadcom drivers.The problem is similar with this one here but changing from default kernel to desktop didn't work in my case. have already read through Getting your Wireless to work and Broadcom instructions

I recently bought Dell Studio 15 laptop, installed OpenSUSE11.2/64 in addition to Win7 64 bit. I am trying to connect it to my wireless network at home and at work, but without much luck.
1)Found out that Dell 1520 WLAN adapter has Broadcom 4353 chipset.
2)saw that b43-fwcutter installed
3)installed broadcom-wl and broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop
After that can see many wireless Access Points at home,selected one via NetworkManager (eth1), configured it (incl. security same as in Win7), it goes from Activating to Active, but I still can not connect - I mean, in the FireFox - "page not found"

View 9 Replies View Relatedusing opensuse 11.4 on laptop--we went down the shore and I added a bunch of wireless connections and it was working down there, but now we came back and I deleted all of them except my wireless network connection. I'm not sure if anything else was messed with as others were using this laptop.
When I start up the networking icon says Unavailable.....when I click on it greyed out is "Network Management disabled" and "Enable wireless" The Wireless light on the laptop is a solid orange. When it is working it is flashing.
What do I do to troubleshoot this? I am fairly noobish to linux.
I am running FC13 on a Compaq Presario 2100 using a Broadcom BCM4306. I was able to get it running thanks to Fedora Unity Project. But It's a very unstable connection. I don't know what settings to adjust or enable or disable. It's not my router, this is the only wireless connection in the house that I have trouble with.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been running Karmic since it was officially released on my Dell Studio 17 (specs are in my signature) with a Broadcom wireless half mini wireless card.hen I installed Karmic, it gave me the option to install proprietary drivers for my video card as well as 2 Broadcom drivers, STA and one of the BC43 drivers. I installed all of these, and the only problems I had were with the audio. I spent a few days troubleshooting the audio and finally got PulseAudio set up for my card.
Almost 3 months later, I was making use of my wireless network at home, as I had done plenty of times over the previous 3 months, when I closed the lid (thus putting the computer into sleep mode) and took it to the hospital to stay with my fianc饠after her surgery. When I got to the hospital, I couldn't get their network to show up. Network Manager didn't even recognize the network. We had also brought my fianc饧s laptop (same machine with a slightly less powerful CPU and only 4 GB of RAM). She is running Windows 7, which detected the hospital's network with no problems.After trying to ad-hoc the hospital network with no success, I finally just gave up and played Sudoku and toyed with some graphics stuff in GIMP until we came home. Upon returning home, however, I was shocked that my card didn't even detect our home network.
I have been unsuccessful for the past 3 days in getting Network Manager to identify our wireless network. Today I changed my home router's security setting from WPA to WPA2, and my openSUSE 11.4 Tumbleweed system's network stopped working.It is very strange, because it can connect to the wireless no problem and it gets ip address and everything, but I cannot access any websites. I tried to revert the router setting back to WPA, but still the same.Funny thing is I can actually open the router admin page.
Even I plugged the wired lan cable to my laptop, but still the same. It connects, but no internet.Where should I look? My the other laptop with openSUSE 11.4 connects to the same router without any problem.
I have this weird issue which only appears when I am using 64 bit Ubuntu. Every now and then my laptop seems to go into a kernel panic (system unresponsive, numlock and scrollock lights flash repetitively) only when I am using the broadcom wireless. I can connect to my wireless router and use the internet and local network, but eventually, kablamo, crash, bang, boom. The only way out of the crash is to power off completely. After repowering, the wireless network is fine until the next crash. There does not seem to be a pattern or time period to cause this crash either. I have purged network manager(which I couldn't get to use my wireless) and am using wicd, which allows me to connect wirelessly.

I have a Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv6000. I had no issues before the upgrade, but after, my wireless driver refuses to turn on the wireless at all. I've seen in most of the posts, people can see the wireless networks but not access them. I can't even get my little orange wireless (off) light to turn blue (on). The "additional drivers" option in "administration" was a bust and I've tried reinstalling the kernel from my original disk iso.

I currently have the STA broadcom driver enabled and all I can do is use a cable for internet right now.
I'm having some issues with openSUSE 11.2 recognizing my Broadcom adapter. Following the instructions in the two stickied topics, I can find the adapter both under YaST's Hardware Summary and using the console command /sbin/lspci. I cannot, however, find it with /sbin/lspci -n, and the boot log (viewed with dmesg | less) makes no mention of it either.
Do I need to turn it on or something? This is a dual boot machine, and it works fine under Windows, so I don't think there's a hardware failure at play here.
I've been reading up on how to get the Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g on my Dell Inspiron 1525 to work with OpenSUSE and I've tried everything, I've even re-installed the OS 3 times as I seemed to keep screwing something up. I've tried doing what it says in this thread

For those of you that prefer open-source solutions, the b43 code to drive BCM432X 802.11n devices has just come to life. It can now scan and associate. Tests for throughput will come soon. These revisions to the driver will be in kernel 2.6.38, thus not in openSUSE until the next release after 11.4.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed b43 with the install script and I can see all wireless networks fine, but NetworkManager just keeps asking me for the WPA passphrase, despite it being correct. I tried disabling WPA on the router, but then the connection hangs at "Configuring interface" instad. I also tried with ifup, but I'm not sure I configured everything correctly. I don't get any smarter from the NetworkManager logs, maybe someone else can decipher them? tail -50 when connection doesn't work:

I have been trying to get my Broadcom BCM4328 to work properly on openSUSE 11.2 (kernel 2.6.31.5). Finally, after installing the wl kernel module, I managed to get it working when a run the following commands after a reboot:
sudo /sbin/modprobe -r b43 b44 ssb wl
sudo /sbin/modprobe wl
sudo /sbin/modprobe b44
sudo /etc/init.d/network restart
My question is how can I automate the above commands, i.e. create a startup script to initialise the wireless adapter properly without the need to manually reload the kernel modules?

On every other machine and on this laptop when running Windows,It is WEP, Open system, Key Index 1, and the passphrase works except on this when running OpenSuse.It seems as if it just times out.
Im making plans to buy a 15" Dell Inspiron notebook as it's currently the cheapest 15" notebook which is available in my country, and from what I have read, the Dell WiFi card used in the notebook is Broadcom based, and that Broadcom had recently released hybrid drivers for their cards. Now, after browsing through OpenSUSE's HCL [URL] it seems that a patch to the drivers is needed.how do you patch the driver? Do you just go to <extracted driver directory>/src/wl/sys/wl_iw.c and just throw in this whole chunk of text anyway into the file, or is there something more to it?

From my lspci output I get Broadcom 4313 and 0x14e4:0x4727It appears that Broadcom supports this card with their Linux STA driverBroadcom.com - 802.11 Linux STA driver guess on that page mine is 4313 2.4 Ghz 0x14e40x4727 Dell 1501even though my notebook is Toshiba.Then they say that the driver is included with Fedora and Ubuntu but nothing about OpenSuse. Then they go on about compiling the driver myself. I'm pretty sure the modules required for compiling drivers are not available on a fresh install and without Internet connection.Is there an easier way to get the driver? Could someone knowledgeable make some .rpm that I can download on another machine and put on a USB stick? Or do I have to wait until Suse developers get to it?
Or could someone make wl.ko file they are talking about on Broadcome Readme? It looks fairly easy to install the driver, if I knew exactly what to disable/blacklist and what security module to load.Another thing I got from dmesg, not sure if it's of any help, was that for this card pci entry that goes like 07:00.0 there's "support D1 D2", then "#PME supported from D0 D3hot D3cold" then the next line "#PME disabled". I've searched this forum but the only time 4313 was mentioned when someone made a mistake with the model number
