General :: Ubuntu To Kubuntu - Terminal Screen In The Top Left - Broken

Mar 5, 2011

I have been using Ubuntu for a week and getting on well with it. After reading reviews I decided to try Kubuntu. I installed it from the terminal and all seemed to go well. Now when I start the computer and select ubuntu it goes to a log in screen. I type in my user name and password and all I get is a terminal screen in the top left. If I close this I go through a 'broken screen' and back to the sign in.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome-terminal Glitch Causes Upper Left Of Screen Freeze

Apr 14, 2011

When it launches, sometimes a few mins later, the upper left of the screen (where gnome-terminal sits) freezes and becomes unresponsive. The cursor always stays as the 'text entry' cursor when in the region. If I alt-drag the window and close, nothing changes. It only goes away when I right click the area (even if I have moved/closed the terminal window) I have terminal options so I select 'close' then the screen resumes.

Ubuntu Installation :: After Logging In The Screen Remains In The Login Splash And A Small Terminal Appears In The Upper Left Corner

Jan 23, 2010

recently had to reinstall ubuntu 9.10....after all the updates & changes i made in synaptic and some restarts, i wanted to proceed in installing my nvidia drivers, so i stopped gdm and attempted to login as root, but it would not let me. it's strange because i created the root account password prior to this.

so, issuing the command to restart gdm brought me to the login window. after logging in, the screen remains in the login splash and a small terminal appears in the upper left corner. can't seem to get gnome started up.

General :: On Kubuntu, Whenever Open The Terminal, Go Straight To ~/Documents?

Jun 29, 2011

Even after changing the file name to Document, Doc, Docs, etc. It always makes it the default directory. It's not a "Deal-Breaker" with me deciding between Ubuntu 11.04 Classic and Kubuntu 11.04, but it's kind of annoying. How do I change it to my home directory *I.E /home/theif519* instead of /home/theif519/Doc* ?

Is there a file I have to edit or something?

Ubuntu :: Bash Broken, Lost Functionality In Terminal (gnome-terminal)?

Dec 10, 2010

Linux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"

In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.

P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!

General :: Kubuntu 9.10 Boots Only A Command Terminal / Specific Commands To Get The Files?

Nov 6, 2009

In a couple days I plan on changing to opensuse from kubuntu. Anyway in the Kpackagemanager I removed the pulseaudio client (and its dependencies) and it messed up my system a bit. I don't really mind but all I need is to get my files from my home folder off my hdd to an external through usb 2.0. When Kubuntu 9.10 boots now all it is is a command terminal basically and I don't know the specific commands to get the files. Or if I need to reinstall something so that it boots up with a graphical looking UI again.

General :: Launch A Terminal By Clicking On The Terminal Icon At The Top Of The Screen

Apr 22, 2010

I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.

1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel?
2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts
3) Enter: regina fv2

I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.

General :: Terminal Proxy Or Screen Without Terminal Emulation?

May 26, 2010

How can I make terminal applications immune to terminal emulator close, but still able to use all virtual terminal features?

egin{UPDATE}I want my terminal application remain alive and accessible if I accidentally close terminal emulator. This functionality is provided by screen and tmux, but they have issues with colors and they flush screen.Yes,I can run the shell inside screen, but I do not want the shell remain alive unless there is some other program running.

end{UPDATE}I see this must be something like screen, but without VT100 terminal emulation, something which will just apply whatever application does with "terminal proxy"'s terminal (like outputting something to stdout/stderr or using stty to set terminal options) to the terminal this proxy runs in.

// I know about screen and altscreen on, but it makes either this (screen with TERM=screen):

or this (screen with TERM=rxvt-unicode):

while I want this (rxvt-unicode without screen):

I have figured out that everything looks fine if I compile rxvt-unicode with USE=-xterm-color (in fact vim looks like on the second picture even without screen if I add this USE flag) and set TERM=screen-256color, but I do not like this workaround because it actually changes colors and I can't be sure that it will always change them only this way:

I just installed Ubuntu on my home desktop computer this morning, and I am having fun exploring this new alternative to Microsoft. I originally tried to install Kubuntu, but after multiple unsuccessful attempts I gave Ubuntu a try and it worked like a charm.

Here's what I did: First, I burned the installation CD. Then I booted from that CD and began the installation process. When the Kubuntu desktop came up, and the icons started to appear, the screen suddenly went black. After that it flashed back and forth between the partially loaded desktop and the black screen.
That's as far as I got.

The Community plasmoid widget thingy is broken on my 64-bit Kubuntu 11.04 system. The last time it worked was sometime in the 10.04 era. I will gratefully receive any suggestions for fixing it.The symptoms are these: It opens with three tabs: Nearby, Friends, Messages. I expect this. There are no entries in the "Nearby" tab. When I log into opendesktop.org w/Firefox, I can see about a dozen people nearby in my town. When I click on the configuration button, it shows me my username and obscured password for opendesktop.org.When I click on the widget again, it there are more tabs! "Friends" and "Messages" are repeated twice each, giving me seven tabs: Nearby, Friends, Messages, Friends, Messages, Friends, Messages. When I click on the configuration button again, the username and password fields are empty.

I just installed ubuntu 9.1 on an inspiron 4000. The screen looks like like its been split and I can't see the options to try to change display options. I have uploaded a picture from my phone. It kinda sucks but it's there. I have tried "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". this gives me nothing but an empty prompt. I have also tried "sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf". this gives me box where I can type but enter doesn't make it submit, just moves down a line and there is no information there like it seems there should be. I got to the display preferences and it says the monitor is unknown. changing the display resolution does not fix it. FIXED by going here: [URL]...

Ubuntu :: Terminal Is Giving Errors Left And Right - Cause Booting From CD?

Nov 12, 2010

I don't actually have Ubuntu installed to my hard drive yet, I'm still playing with it on the demo CD. I'm new to linux, but the terminal is very familiar to me (iPhone jailbreaker).
Thing is, Terminal is giving me the finger anytime it can. I've yet to successfully do something on it. Simple things like "dpkg" or "cd any directory at all" are being a pain, and I can't put anything in /user/.Is this cause I'm booting it using a "demo CD", or does my computer just hate Ubuntu and I should give up now?

General :: Top/left Edges Of Screen In Virtualbox Act Like Bottom/right Edges

Apr 28, 2010

I have Virtualbox running on Windows Vista, and Debian running inside Virtualbox. Everything's running great, for the most part. Everything looks correct.

But when I'm in full-screen mode, the top edge seems to act (to the mouse) like it's the bottom edge, and the left edge seems to act like the right edge. For example, if I click in the middle of the desktop and drag left, as if to select some icons, when I hit the very leftmost pixel of the screen, the selection (but not the mouse pointer) jumps to the far right edge of the screen).

For the left edge, it's not such a big deal, but not having the top edge is kind of annoying: it means I can't select things from the menu in my top panel by slamming the mouse against the top of the screen.

Ubuntu :: Font Rendering On Kubuntu Terminal - Irrespective Of Size ?

See the pic. It happens in both Yakuake and Konsole. I am using inconsolita size 13, but the problem occurs irrespective of size.

I think it's only the bolded text which gets cutoff, but I am not sure. This problem is especially bad when writing something using nano or vim.

Just tried it with DejaVu Sans Mono, and the problem disappears. Weird. I would still like a solution, if you know anything, I am somewhat picky about inconsolita.

Ubuntu :: Can't Turn On Terminal Bell In Gnome-terminal Using Remote Screen Session With Irssi

Nov 6, 2010

I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.

My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.

My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.

I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc

And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.

No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.

I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.
