General :: Kubuntu 9.10 Boots Only A Command Terminal / Specific Commands To Get The Files?
Nov 6, 2009
In a couple days I plan on changing to opensuse from kubuntu. Anyway in the Kpackagemanager I removed the pulseaudio client (and its dependencies) and it messed up my system a bit. I don't really mind but all I need is to get my files from my home folder off my hdd to an external through usb 2.0. When Kubuntu 9.10 boots now all it is is a command terminal basically and I don't know the specific commands to get the files. Or if I need to reinstall something so that it boots up with a graphical looking UI again.

This is after months of Mint, which is limited. One problem. It (Deb)boots to the terminal mode. uh... call me stupid, but I have no idea how to get to my desktop. Never needed that command once in my life. I can't find the answer anywhere. Typical. The most basic info is always overlooked. Whats the command line to get to the desktop so I can reconfig this?

suppose in my current directory, I have 50 sub-directories. Now, I am interested only in about 20 of those sub-directories (whose names match a pattern). I would like to recursively list the contents of these 20 sub-directories. How do I do that ? I would like to do this in Solaris 10 and Linux(RHEL 5.x).

I recently installed Kubuntu with the windows installer wubi. Everything has gone fine until today. When i turn on the pc i normally have a prompt to go to windows or kubuntu. I choose Kubuntu and it loads it up. But now it goes to a grub prompt and i have no idea how to fix this or get into Kubuntu.
Things i did before the last reboot that may have caused this.
I edited my swappiness to help speed things up at the advice of many websites.
Example: url
I changed it from 60 to 10. I did this by adding the line "vm.swappiness=10" to the end of sysctl.conf
I noticed that there was a # or something at the beginning of every line in sysctl.conf and i did NOT add it to my line. This is my guess as to why i am having problems.
The other thing i did was some bug updates. Something was popping up down by the clock area and it was asking me to do some bug updates of some sort. I said yes.
Any idea on how i can fix this? As of now i cannot get into kubuntu at all. It just gives me a grub command prompt.

I did some digging on the sudo command and I do know the config file is /etc/sudoers Read the manual for sudoers and found out that I must use visudo to edit the file I read some of the examples at the bottom of the file and tried entering my own account in following the example. one of the commands I was trying to allow my account to perform without root login is the mount command So I tried adding this in (kreid8 /bin/mount ALL) I then saved & exited the file and logged out of root and tried sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media. I got an error saying I had to be root in order to do that But when I use the visudo -l option it shows that I have that privellege. Did I edit the file incorrectly?

I want to delete all files within a specific folder without actually deleting the folder, what is a good bash command for this?. I found this one but encountered some errors even though I am executing it within the specific folder:
useratdebian:/home/user/folder# find . -type f -exec rm -rf {} ;
[1] 5052
useratdebian:/home/user/folder# find: missing argument to `-exec'
[1]+ Exit 1 find . -type f -exec rm -rf
The command as it appears is:
find . -type f -exec rm -rf {} ;
how to delete only the files contained within the folder called "folder" for example?

I know CD, Apt-Get, and Dir, but besides that I know mostly Command Prompt commands and that's not many, and they seem to differ from Terminal. What are some useful Terminal commands that I should know how to use in times or need?

i don't know if there is a way to check or see the list of commands available to each shell you decide to use, be it BASH,KSH, etc in your terminal. You know how its works in microsoft, in cmd-line or dos, you type HELP and its brings all the commands available for use.

Recently I gained interest in running command from the terminal, like rhythmbox-client --play-pause and vlc --open, but I could not find the vlc's pause command under vlc. there's a way I can have a terminal display the commands that run when I do some action. For example, when I click on pause in vlc, the terminal should show me what command it used to pause vlc. What's the closest ting I can get to this?

Even after changing the file name to Document, Doc, Docs, etc. It always makes it the default directory. It's not a "Deal-Breaker" with me deciding between Ubuntu 11.04 Classic and Kubuntu 11.04, but it's kind of annoying. How do I change it to my home directory *I.E /home/theif519* instead of /home/theif519/Doc* ?
Is there a file I have to edit or something?

I'm trying to get a script to open a gnome-terminal and input commands into it, just as you would typing them in. That way, I can automate commands using bash, even if the terminal is running a non-bash program like telnet, mysql, vim, etc.
So, for instance..
I would like to open telnet to connect to a mud (I'm aware of the security concerns) and input commands through a script.
This way, I can log in, enter name/password, and do some start-game stuff automatically.
This isn't just for a mud, though. I'd like to be able to script inputs for any terminal application... maybe automate vim, mysql, or whatever.

I am looking for a terminal app that will allow me to save my password and maybe set up some sessions since I often log into multiple machines each day. Also is there something out there that will allow me to save common commands to a hot key?

I keep all of my web design work under /var/www/(application_name). Nine times out ten, when I open a terminal, I'm heading to the www folder - cd /var/www. I would love to make that my "home" folder for the terminal, so it would just open there - I know if I ctrl+shift+t to open a new tab it defaults to the same dir, but it would be nice to have the first opened terminal default to there. Is this possible, or is there a better way to go about this?

I have been using Ubuntu for a week and getting on well with it. After reading reviews I decided to try Kubuntu. I installed it from the terminal and all seemed to go well. Now when I start the computer and select ubuntu it goes to a log in screen. I type in my user name and password and all I get is a terminal screen in the top left. If I close this I go through a 'broken screen' and back to the sign in.

In gnome terminal it is possible to open multiple tabs with Quote:$ gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=jake_lardasset --tab-with-profile=virtualsexgranny -x alpineWe got even further....Quote:gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=james_treesexer --command pymol --tab-with-profile=loverboy13 --command alpineand pymol runs, but not in the tab and alpine runs in the tab.The problem is, that when using a script to check mail it has Quote:gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=chrissypink --command alpine --tab-with-profile=jake_hugerichard -x ssh xxxx@xxxx.ut.eenot the other way aroundIs there a simpler way to do this?And why is it not possible to execute ssh with the --command parameter and -x has to be used ,but top and so on can be executed with --command
