I'd like to change the login thing on the left of the terminal: [james@xxxxxx home]$ But can't figure out what it's called to do a search, so figured I'd ask all in one! What is it called, and how do I customise it in bash_profile ?
View 1 Repliesrecently had to reinstall ubuntu 9.10....after all the updates & changes i made in synaptic and some restarts, i wanted to proceed in installing my nvidia drivers, so i stopped gdm and attempted to login as root, but it would not let me. it's strange because i created the root account password prior to this.
so, issuing the command to restart gdm brought me to the login window. after logging in, the screen remains in the login splash and a small terminal appears in the upper left corner. can't seem to get gnome started up.
difference b/w a login shell and a non-login shell ?
I know that when we use su - <username> we are getting a login shell & when we use su <user-name> we are getting a non-login shell.
Do we get any additional privileges when we have a login shell compared to a non-login shell ?
Is there a way (In the terminal or script file) to change the session during login? The login screen I have in Ubuntu 10-10 only allows for name and password, no other options. Is there a way to change the login screen? I downloaded some new login screens but don't know how to change the current gnome.desktop session to something else and I DON'T want to get stuck in another login "Twilight Zone"
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been using Ubuntu for a week and getting on well with it. After reading reviews I decided to try Kubuntu. I installed it from the terminal and all seemed to go well. Now when I start the computer and select ubuntu it goes to a log in screen. I type in my user name and password and all I get is a terminal screen in the top left. If I close this I go through a 'broken screen' and back to the sign in.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am using red hat 5. It is asking me for a user name at the terminal. I do not understand what it is asking of me. A user name was never established during installation of the program. it did ask for a root password during installation which i provided. At the terminal i did try typing "root" for the log in and the actual root password for the password. It gave me administrative access.
However, i don't know the correct command that will take me to the desktop. For windows i simply typed in win or exit to go to the main windows desktop. Linux is foreign to me... can anyone help? I would be greatful for the advice. I am a windows junky from way back.
I don't actually have Ubuntu installed to my hard drive yet, I'm still playing with it on the demo CD. I'm new to linux, but the terminal is very familiar to me (iPhone jailbreaker).
Thing is, Terminal is giving me the finger anytime it can. I've yet to successfully do something on it. Simple things like "dpkg" or "cd any directory at all" are being a pain, and I can't put anything in /user/.Is this cause I'm booting it using a "demo CD", or does my computer just hate Ubuntu and I should give up now?

I want it to display on the screen using a split terminal screen, so all of the information shows on one display, but I do not want it to be vulnerable to a local attacker. Is there any way I can have these things start up at login, but prevent that user from doing anything other than viewing this information?
I am using red hat .I want that when ever the user login in GUI interface the terminal windows automatically open and then the user want to logout it 1st close the terminal and then login. There is a file in #ls -a i.e .bashrc and .bash_logout
View 13 Replies View RelatedWhen it launches, sometimes a few mins later, the upper left of the screen (where gnome-terminal sits) freezes and becomes unresponsive. The cursor always stays as the 'text entry' cursor when in the region. If I alt-drag the window and close, nothing changes.It only goes away when I right click the area (even if I have moved/closed the terminal window) I have terminal options so I select 'close' then the screen resumes.

Im trying hard to get familiar with Linux Ubuntu and Im a bit comfused on one thing. Why can I run an Open Office doc just by clicking and in terminal a have to change the permissions to run it even as a root?I thought that in graphic mode Im the actual root no? And so when I run the terminal I should be still the root no?

System replied that it has not ash shell.so I thought the shell did not change. But when I start the system again and enter root password, I see a message like "can not execute ash. No such file or directory" and then system return to login page again. Root is the only user on that system.

I've come to the conclusion that my root partition is full, but I'm not sure how to clear space, or how much to clear once I work out how to do it. I removed a few packages with apt, but it doesn't seem to have any effect. df -h shows that root is 100% full, yet it has 3GB free. I've grown comfortable with Ubuntu in the couple years I've been using it, yet this level of problem-solving is a bit nerve-wracking to me. I've been considering reinstalling (this machine is running Lucid upgraded from Karmic and Jaunty and has a few oddities), but I hate the idea of being forced to reinstall because I can't overcome this problem. If you need any other information or outputs from terminal commands, I'm happy to provide it.
I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. After installing the ATI drivers, I had to tweak GRUB to get the nice splash screen back during boot. Then, I installed drivers for my TV Tuner (Hauppauge 2250). The card works fine. However, my boot now goes splash screen to a terminal login for around 10 sec where system messages also show up to the GUI Login screen. I was wondering if there was anyway to return to a normal boot.
