1. Is there a way to change the broken glass/monitor background on the login screen???
2. I have tried to login as root, but it will not accept the password, but if I login with my user name and need to change things that require root privileges the password works fine.
I worked a little back in 05 and 06 with FC4 and FC5 but nothing until now..
I use linux mint 8, and I want to change the background for the login screen. For easier and smoother login. Ive googled for days,cand nothing works. I tried GDM2 and I press select new image, but it doesnt work. Do I need the image in a certain folder?

View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter trying to personalize GDM's login screen, I have been able to change the background (If anyone know how to personalize GDM's login screen, Sometimes when I go on the login screen, I see a gray box without anything on it (I try ALT+CTRL+F# and ALT+CTRL+BACKSPACE) but nothing is shown. With the new changes to RHEL 6, and it being more inline with Fedora, how do you change the login screen background? I'm talking about the main login screen, not after you have logged in and need to change the desktop background. We use a custom background for machines in our lab, and need to implement this on 6.

No.1 I would like to change the HORRIBLE!! YAK!! brown background color behind the word Ubuntu in the start up screen when the machine loads up (before the login). I have located the image file for this which I have found to be: /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600. jpg but the OS says that root is the owner and that I don't have permission to change this. So how can I change this for a color I do like.
No.2 I would also like to change the login dialogue screen style. I know this is possible but again I'm fumbling to see how I can do this. I have tried with the start up manager but every attempt fails, the settings don't take. Once again I suspect permissions are at the bottom of the problem?
No.3 Would like to have a colorful splash screen image on boot up, I've managed to remove the old one (small white 3 ring ubuntu logo on black background) but havent been able to install or replace with a new one. Its been incredibly frustrating, I'm feel sure I'm missing something simple here. Wondering if its permissions yet again?
Anyone who can offer help on any of the above, guidance or advise me would be much appreciated. Please bear in mind that I'm still very much feeling my way with Linux so keep it simple.
I have two monitors attached to my video card. Primary monitor has a resolution equal to 1280x1024 and second has 1920x1200. My gdm login screen always appears on the second monitor even if it is switched off. My question is how to force gdm to show login screen always on primary monitor with resolution 1280x1024? I use Ubuntu 10.04.Now I'm ready to modify gdm sources if there is no such option in configuration files.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment. I don't like the background in the login screen and want to change it. After some Googling I discovered that the path to the background is stored in the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.
Unfortunately, whenever I change the background field I'm left with a black background during login. (Yes, I triple checked that I spelt the path correctly). Does the login background have to meet some criteria I don't know about, like being a certain resolution?

Today I download a gdm login window theme package, but I don't know how to install it. Results by google searching shows it is very easy on ubuntu by entering System-> Administration -> login window. But I don't find that way on fedora now. The theme package I download is named GDM-BrasillinuxEye.tar.gz . I download it from official web [URL] .

I proceeded to right click on the background and change it back while logged in. After a 2nd reboot I could see it changed it for my userid, but I still get that wrong background during the login prompt. How can I change it back for there?

But I'm now faced with a problem with the transparency in LXDE, I have a box around my cairo-dock with a piece of my login screen background (looks like the well-known black-box bug. See Screen shot). This is a bit strange and I've been looking at the solutions for the black-box bug since I've had it before, but have not found a way to sort this yetv(though i have found many solutions for the black-box bug itself).
But, not only is this box around cairo-dock, the rest of the transparency in LXDE also shows the login screen background. See screen shot. Screen shot: [URL] As you can see, i haven't had time to work on the eye-candy yet.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing Karma and kubuntu -single boot. When I restarted my machine, the login appeared as usual and I entered my usual password but it was not accepted . I tried several times including making sure that caps lock / num lock etc were not invoked.
I then rebooted into recovery mode and let it run its course. When I rebooted and input my login password, I can get a bit further. The login is accepted but the GUI opens with a blank wallpaper and the terminal prompt window open at the keevill@keevill-desktop.
The ls command shows the name of the files which are on the desktop but they are not visible on the GUI nor are any other icons for applications. It seems like the kubuntu GUI is broken or something. I tried uninstall and then re-install but just the same. If I am forced to re-install Ubuntu I guess this means I lose all my settings and applications will have to be all installed again ?? How can I avoid this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo, a friend's computer, running 8.04, refused to boot for a while, so I took a look at it. It appeared to boot fine, but when I got to the login screen, it crashed when I started typing. I did a hard power-off, booted it up again, and tried to update the packages (it has been disused for a few months, and I suspected that the problems had been fixed). Synaptic told me that I would have to uninstall a bunch of packages in addition to updating, which was all fine and good, but then it crashed at the end of it's purge, and left me wondering if the system would be stable afterwards. The update manager told me that I had broken packages, but then went on updating a few of them. When I went back to synaptic, it disagreed, showing no broken packages. I tried to open Firefox, but then GNOME crashed. How do I do a mass reinstall of all of the packages, and do I do this before or after I update the packages?
