I am new to this forum. Today morning I installed "skim" program which i used for chinese input. when my sytem was restarted for the second time, it went inside but the GUI login screen reappears even after giving the correct password!

using Kubuntu 10.04. When my computer was being updated sudden power failure forced my system to reboot and in the log in screen I can find that my keyboard and mouse is not working at all. I cannot enter into my system. I tried to enter ctrl+F1 but failed.

I saw some pictures of Kubuntu online and thought it looked awesome. I installed it from Gnome using the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop". It installed fine, no errors. I logged off and picked Plasma Workspace or whatever its called from the menu and it showed a black screen for about 7 seconds, then showed a clear bar with a hard drive icon fading in. Then it crashed back to the login screen. I rebooted and tried again: same thing. I installed xfce and it works perfectly. Gnome still works. Ditto for Unity. But kde keeps crashing. PS: Graphics card is an ATI Radeon.

After the reboot, it gives me the login screen. After filling up the details there it again shows me the same login screen. This goes on forever.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI cannot use several keys (1,`, q, a, z & Esc) on my keyboard.I have just installed Kubuntu 11.04, AMD64 version via Wubi. Everything went well w/o any errors. At 1st boot, I also logged in w/o errors, and then tried some apps for Office & Network and shut down. The keyboard was still alright at that time. However, The problem started on the 2nd boot after the installation. Those keys do not response in Kubuntu & Windows 7 login screen and even in my PC's BIOS setup.
My laptop model is Dell Lattitude E6410, core i5, Intel HD Graphics, WD HDD 160GB. And I installed on the other partition, not my Windows one.
I have two OS in my system. Windows& and Kubuntu. Both are in separate hard disks. I was using both. In between i have upgraded my system. now when i am giving priority to hard disk containing kubuntu, i can login to kubuntu, but cant get in to windows7. i have upgraded grub but not working. when i am giving priority to hard disk containig windows7 it enters and work properly. but not working in the previous.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu on my home desktop computer this morning, and I am having fun exploring this new alternative to Microsoft. I originally tried to install Kubuntu, but after multiple unsuccessful attempts I gave Ubuntu a try and it worked like a charm.
Here's what I did: First, I burned the installation CD. Then I booted from that CD and began the installation process. When the Kubuntu desktop came up, and the icons started to appear, the screen suddenly went black. After that it flashed back and forth between the partially loaded desktop and the black screen.

I have been using Ubuntu for a week and getting on well with it. After reading reviews I decided to try Kubuntu. I installed it from the terminal and all seemed to go well. Now when I start the computer and select ubuntu it goes to a log in screen. I type in my user name and password and all I get is a terminal screen in the top left. If I close this I go through a 'broken screen' and back to the sign in.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem after upgrading from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.1 (LTS): after reboot I get the login panel but when I type login + password, the system begin to go ahead but immediately comes back to login panel, so I can't get the Desktop obviously .
I checked the following : The kubuntu-desktop is already in place the kdm I think it works well (start & stop work) and the file xorg.conf has been rebuilded with the cmd "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg".
After the login screen, the KDE icons appear.When it gets to "HDD" icon, it halts and the only option remaining is to reboot.I can't boot into the terminal environment. When I try that, I get an empty screen without text (maybe because of "quiet splash"?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using OpenWRT on a WRT54GS. I'm using wifidog in combination with openvpn. For those of you familiar with wifidog, my auth server is located at the other end of an openvpn tunnel and the "wifi dog gateway" is running on the WRT itself. I'm don't really think that wifi dog is the issue. Basically, I'm using openvpn with the "redirect-gateway" option which works well. In this mode, openvpn removes my current default gateway setting and adds the remote openvpn server as the default gateway (as it should). However, overnight, my default gateway on the local network keeps reapperaing (along with the openvpn one as well).
This causes confusion and I don't want any packets (But ovbiously the connection to the actual openvpn server) to go down this local gateway. Why do you think it reappears? Do you reckon openvpn is dropping connection and somehow the normal gateway is being added back? I *could* run a cron script which runs every minute or so with something like "route del default gw xx.xx.xx.xx" (where xx.xx.xx.xx is the default gateway which I don't want to be there) but that is quite messy and means that if I were to ever move the router I would need to reconfigure this and considering that I would like in the future to have many of these wifi dog gateways, this really isn't an ideal option (as every network will have a different default gateway).
A few month ago one of my computers ( hp thin client ) was compromised. I reformatted the harddrives and reinstalled MANDRIVA 2010 .
After a few days I had been prompted at login with a username robert
even if there was no more user robert ( I changed to use rob at new installation )
So I became nervous and formatted again 4x first ext3 than swap than ntfs than
reiserfs. I kept this computer out of network ( used as standalone no LAN no WLAN )
I reformatted all my usb sticks and external hds. And now a few days ago the clou, robert was back again at login !
But there is no user robert in /etc/shadow how to stop him coming back ?
Just loaded Lenny, mostly with defaults. I'd like to go back to a command-line login for the console attached to the machine. Of course, I'd like to be able to 'startx' whenever I do want the GUI up.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to create a script that I can save on the desktop of my Primary computer and have it log in (get past the log in screen on the remote computers, and the banner) to multiple computers with the same user name and password in a LAN that is not connected to the internet.I am also trying to create a script that starts a script on the desktop of these remote machines ON the remote machines, but I think I am on the verge of figuring that one out with the "expect" command in a script.

Using CentOS 5 and from within the local root user I opened the log in screen preferences and then opened the Security tab. I then opened the "configer Xserver" and I have unchecked the "logins are handled by this computer". Now Since I have logged out of root all I have is the X cursor on a black screen and no log in. Obviously logins are not handled by this computer as I unchecked it! Is there anyway to get this back on as I cannot access this from another PC.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded Kubuntu to 10.04 LTS. At login screen I enter my password to login once that harddrive icon comes up it immediatly gives me a black screen then goes back to the login screen.
ive tried deleting everything in /tmp/. i did a sudo dpkg --reconfigure -a, Gnome works perfectly well.

i'm currently using the claws mail rssyl plugin to manage my rss feeds, but i have two issues with it:
1) when i delete an rss item it reappears when i refresh the feed
2) when i mark all posts of a feed as read, a little while later (for example) 5 of the 20 items become new/unread again. these unread items are random (not the latest posts)
the only pattern i can see (regarding issue #2) is that it only affects feeds hosted on videos. i'm thinking of finding a different application to manage my rss feeds, but it is nice to have email and feeds in once place.
My problem is basically that when I boot for the first time after a fresh installation and setup, I am always stuck at the login screen or thrown back to it. No matter what account I log onto, whether it's 'root' or any other user account I have setup, it would attempt logging in, black out the screen, turn my monitor off then on again and I'm back at the login screen. This is all using the graphical interface of course. I'm having this same problem with all the linux distributions that I've tried so far:
Gnome Sabayon Mandriva 2010-I've even tried changing all the different boot environments, and same problem Open Solaris and Ubuntu won't even install. It just sits at the loading screen. Why would this happen? I've tried all these OS's on my regular PC, which is a dual core, 4 gb of ram, and they've worked perfectly. So why wouldn't it run properly on that other PC?
How to avoid/resolve this problem. after i input user/password the VNC screen will just have a cursor
View 1 Replies View Related10.10 32 bit on a pc with a GForce 9600 GT VGA and P5KPL-SE mainboard.Sometimes, while booting, after the letters on the screen message " booting from hd1..." get thinner, everything stops and I dont get the purple login screen. After switcihng pc off and rebooting, usually, everything is OK. I used proprietary nvidia driver version current and after switching to version 173 (considering that it might had to do with the driver), maybe it somewhat improved things but the problem persists. IT is not that terrible to reboot except for that I use this pc at work and switching it off sometimes starts the disk check for errors utility which lasts long since disk is 1 TBI tried to read dmesg but am not familiar with the terms I show and gave up
