General :: Ubuntu Only Boots With USB Plugged In?

Jul 17, 2011

I installed Ubuntu via USB drive onto my hard drive. If I boot the PC without the usb drive I used, Ubuntu will not load. After booting I can unplug without any consequences.

I looked on the hard drive and there is a boot folder. On the USB drive, this is the tree contents:

/media/disk$ tree
.
|-- adtext.cfg
|-- boot.cat
|-- f10.txt
|-- f1.txt

[Code].....

Am I correct in my assumption that the boot aspect is associated to the USB drive? If so, how do I get it to boot without the USB? I'm guessing copying into some location and modifying grub?

Ubuntu :: Only Boots Into GUI With Screen Plugged In

Nov 24, 2010

I've got a desktop 10.04 LTS installation working nicely, and leave it logged in processing things for me. I log in remotely and don't always leave the screen plugged into the computer. Trouble is when I reboot it without the screen plugged in it will sometimes boot to a command prompt. If I turn it off, plug in the screen and turn it on again I get into the GUI as normal. I can't see any settings to change this behavior - what am I missing?

Fedora :: Cold Boots Often Take Up To 10 Attempts Before The Computer Successfully Boots?

Oct 29, 2010

my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:

the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.

finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.

usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.

this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.

right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.

the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??

I know in windows xp there is a registry key and an entry in the Plug and Play log file as well as maybe an event id, that is produced when a device (say usb) is plugged in. My question is, besides /var/log/ (messages?) Is there any other location that that information is stored in?

General :: OpenSuse Won't Boot Without Pendrive Plugged In

Apr 3, 2011

I was building LFS on a pendrive this morning when it crashed in the middle of making gcc. I rebooted without my pendrive and I never got into the desktop. Instead, I get a visually pleasing terminal telling me that it couldn't find and that the only way to reboot would be to press CTRL+D. I'm then given a command line and that's that.

Rebooting with the key inside works perfectly.

I reformatted my key and now there's nothing on it. I feel like somewhere somehow I added an entry to the boot process of my system and now I have to remove it. Never dealt with something like this before

Fstab:
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD2500AAJS-60Z0A0_WD-WCAV2M336077-part1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD2500AAJS-60Z0A0_WD-WCAV2M336077-part2 ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1

[Code]....

The LaCie entry at the bottom there is my pendrive.

General :: Unable To Copy The Files Over From The Old HDD While Plugged Into The NAS?

May 2, 2011

I'm having issues copying files from a USB attached HDD (formatted by the NAS to EXT3) over to a NAS device. First some background info (maybe relevant or may not be): I upgraded the HDD in my NAS and now I'm unable to copy the files over from the old HDD while plugged into the NAS. Also tried copying over from windows 7 (64 & 32 bit) as well as an XP machine using EXT2FDS & IFS resulting in perpetual re-booting of all three machines. As a result of that I got a brainwave to try copying the files over from a bootable Linux DVD (Unbuntu 11.04) to the Nas over the network. I am in Unbuntu now but I am having problems copying to the NAS. It seems to work when I select individual files but when I select a older/folders/sub folders to copy over an "error while copying" dialog box appears appears. For example: in "Show More Details" here is the copied text from an error: "Error stating file '/media/f0745264-c91b-4528-9fe3-e3469cdb13cc/Public

General :: Powerdevil Doesn't Toggle Between AC Adapter And Plugged In

Jan 20, 2010

Powerdevil has been a pain for me for as long as I've use it, since KDE 4.3.1(Even Pre 4.3.1, up to 4.4)... It doesn't toggle when I unplug the AC adapter and doesn't toggle between power management modes, so in-turn shuts off immediately without any notification that power has ran out. When I ran 'acpi', AC Adapter indicates properly when I unplug it and plug it back in, so I would rule out an ACPI issue, no? Is this a bug in Powerdevil?

General :: Windows 7 X64 Doesn't Boot If A Drive Is Plugged?

Jun 2, 2011

I have connected (sata cable I mean) the drive where I have got my Ubuntu installation to another pc with windows 7 64 bits (but I think that 32 and 64 doesn't make difference). Windows 7 doesn't boot. So I thought it may be some kind of issue with the hard drive itself (but the drive is healthy), anyway I have plugged one drive from one NAS (you know, NAS drives are linux partitioned and formatted).Same result: windows 7 doesn't boot.

Windows 7 boot sequence hangs and at the next boot prompts
"Repair windows installation"
"Boot windows normally"
(and obviously none of the options works)

Looks really like that Windows 7 doesn't boot if any linux partitioned and formatted drive is present.

General :: New Install Of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Boots To BusyBox?

Jan 25, 2011

As the name says, I'm new to Linux. I've never even seen Linux. Super noob. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto a Dell Dimension 2350 P4 1.8ghz, 1g ram, GForce 4x 128mb video card running XP. I installed from a Live CD and rebooted. The screen says "finishing Ubuntu install" does a countdown and loads into BusyBox instead. This is what I see:

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu7) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter help for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)cannot mount /dev/sda1/tmpmountpoint

If I boot from the CD I get: Unable to find a medium containing a live file system I'm stuck, I don't know many commands so step by step. Simply saying 'load grub' means nothing to me.

General :: Create An NFS Server That Boots From CD??

Apr 7, 2011

I would like to boot any PC and make it work as an NFS Server. I like the concepts of liveCDs as they usually have drivers to recognize current and prior hardware to some extent. However, I do not need any GUI or any other services/applications; only what is required to run the NFS server and possibly copy/move files between exported folders from the command line. Can a liveCD be modified with a script to boot up as an NFS Server based on the following list? How do go about creating a bootable NFS Server based on the following list?

The NFS Server should do this upon boot:

- Check for NIC - eth0(?)
- if not present, stop booting with error message.
- if present, assign a specific IP address, mask, gateway.

General :: Installing From USB On Netbook - Still Boots From Hdd

Oct 3, 2010

I used unetbootin to make a bootable usb with PeppermintOs and then reset the BIOS to boot from 'removable'.

It would not boot - went straight to the (grub?) menu offering mint, and mint safe recovery which is from the hard drive.

First USB did not work, so bought a new one (4gb) and that did not work so borrowed a 1GB from a colleague. This did not work either.

I have tried two different ISOs (having done the MD5sum on them as directed).

I have tried fat 32 and ext formats (using gparted to format it as I don't know any other way) and from there I can see that it says boot, lda).

When I disabled HDD from BIOS, the USB was read but then the message was that no boot device found, replace with proper boot device.

I also tried using the start-up disc creator.

Each time I have tried it on my desktop PC too, having set up the BIOS and I haven't been able to boot with them there either. I know that the netbook will boot from USB as that is how Mint 9 got installed on it.

In desperation I even tried creating the USB from windows. Even that didn't work.

Whilst I have a working copy of MInt 9 on the netbook, this is not vital, but I so want to try peppermintOS on it.

General :: Boots To Grub Prompt Instead Of Kubuntu?

Feb 9, 2010

I recently installed Kubuntu with the windows installer wubi. Everything has gone fine until today. When i turn on the pc i normally have a prompt to go to windows or kubuntu. I choose Kubuntu and it loads it up. But now it goes to a grub prompt and i have no idea how to fix this or get into Kubuntu.

Things i did before the last reboot that may have caused this.

I edited my swappiness to help speed things up at the advice of many websites.

Example: url

I changed it from 60 to 10. I did this by adding the line "vm.swappiness=10" to the end of sysctl.conf

I noticed that there was a # or something at the beginning of every line in sysctl.conf and i did NOT add it to my line. This is my guess as to why i am having problems.

The other thing i did was some bug updates. Something was popping up down by the clock area and it was asking me to do some bug updates of some sort. I said yes.

Any idea on how i can fix this? As of now i cannot get into kubuntu at all. It just gives me a grub command prompt.

When i try to launch a live cd (any of them) I get an "out of range" logo on my monitor. I am aware this means my resolution is not right. Come to find out this garbage linux can't even read a sata drive! So I put in my ide HDD and it installs fine, now I have this dumb video problem. Funny as how windows is supposed to be a crappy os in comparison to linux and yet it doesn't seem to give me any problems. So now that you have a first hand perspective of my frustration, what I can do to get this os working on my computer? I just want to be able to see it, so I can play with it and learn to use it. Is that so hard.

General :: Defective Version Of Fedora Boots - Driver Of Video Adapter

Jul 8, 2010

I install security updates - did so and ended up with a copy of fedora that goes into a loop. I suspect the prob is the driver to my video adapter. To run, I need to interrupt grub with an escape. It then shows me two choices the bad one 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686 and the old good one 2.6.31.5.- 127.fc12.i686 It defaults to the bad one, I change it to the good one and tell it ot proceed. this is inconvenient

I see that in /boot/grub/grub.conf the 2 systems are described I beleive that if I merely edit that file, taking out the refernece to the bad one, I will be ok That will leave the bad one on the disk but at least I wont have to go thru the ritual of interrupting grub. If I want to delete the bad one - after I've taken care of the grub.conf file, what do I do?
