General :: Defective Version Of Fedora Boots - Driver Of Video Adapter

Jul 8, 2010

I install security updates - did so and ended up with a copy of fedora that goes into a loop. I suspect the prob is the driver to my video adapter. To run, I need to interrupt grub with an escape. It then shows me two choices the bad one 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686 and the old good one 2.6.31.5.- 127.fc12.i686 It defaults to the bad one, I change it to the good one and tell it ot proceed. this is inconvenient

I see that in /boot/grub/grub.conf the 2 systems are described I beleive that if I merely edit that file, taking out the refernece to the bad one, I will be ok That will leave the bad one on the disk but at least I wont have to go thru the ritual of interrupting grub. If I want to delete the bad one - after I've taken care of the grub.conf file, what do I do?

General :: Version Of Fedora That Supports Nvidia Riva Tnt Display Adapter?

Aug 12, 2010

I am running fedora Fedora 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686 - works fine, but it puts my display adapter in old fashoned simple vga mode.

DISTRIBTION
Fedora 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686
Mysql 5.1.47
Apache 2.2.15

CONFIGURATION
1.25 ghz AMD athlon
NVIDIA RIVA TNT display adapter
ECS K7S5a board / chipset
AMD BIOS 07.00T
512 mb main mem
128 kb primary cache
256 2ndary cache
66 mhz bus clock

I use the bios to dual boot between two disks, (1) this op sys and (2)win98se - where I have a driver that fully supports the nvidia.

The disadvantage to my current situation is that there are some programs - eg Evolution - that assume I can see more than you see with this setup - eg the buttons at the bottom of the screen do not appear and i have to do a trial and error tabbing to get what i want. I just downloaded openoffice and i see that it wants 1000x2000 or so. Thus I wont even try to install it unless i can resolve the adapter thing.

I'm very happy with this fedora - use it for software development. But as I become more fond of it, I would like to use it instead of windows - which I can't unless i can see the whole screen

At one point - in response to a suggestion that I download security updates - I did so and got 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686. It was incompatible with my config - put up a screen that looked like a tv test pattern and went into a loop. So I went back to 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 4870x2 Catalyst Driver \ Finding The Proper Configuration Of OS Version And Driver Version?

Apr 8, 2010

I've been searching for an hour or so and can't seem to find a concrete answer. My endgame is having Ubuntu successfully installed (either 9.10 or 10.04) with a fully working Ati 4870x2. I desperately need some help on finding the proper configuration of OS version and driver version. I installed 10.04 with the 10.3 driver package from ATI's site and it was a no go - I had nothing but problems.

I would like to have full 3d acceleration so I can play some games through Wine. This is a powerful card - I know ATI doesn't have a great reputation in the Linux world but I really hope there is a driver version I can install to get some good results. The rest of my specs are in my signature I need to install 64 bit Ubuntu to make use all of the system and video ram.

General :: Why Does Video Shut Off When Desktop Boots

Aug 4, 2010

When i try to launch a live cd (any of them) I get an "out of range" logo on my monitor. I am aware this means my resolution is not right. Why it's not right is beyond me, isn't this supposed to auto detect these problems and adjust accordingly? I figured installing debian may fix the issue, so i did. Come to find out this garbage linux can't even read a sata drive! So I put in my ide HDD and it installs fine, now I have this dumb video problem. Funny as how windows is supposed to be a crappy os in comparison to linux and yet it doesn't seem to give me any problems. So now that you have a first hand perspective of my frustration, what I can do to get this os working on my computer? I just want to be able to see it, so I can play with it and learn to use it. Is that so hard.

General :: Boots To Bash Shell After Install Of ATI Graphics Driver?

Mar 23, 2011

After installing the ATI graphics driver that was suggested under System > Devices, ubuntu required a reboot. now it either hangs on boot, or boots into the Bash shell. I tried the option in the Grub boot llist to boot into recovery mode, and then teh option to fix recent update (or something like that), but it did not help.
Assuming the ATI driver is the problem, how can I back it out?

General :: Video Driver - Some Video Games Are Unusually Slow

Feb 13, 2011

I installed Debian recently, and everything seems to be working fine, except some video games are unusually slow compared to what they would normally be. Tremulous, for example, worked reasonably fine on this computer with Windows XP, but now (Debian) for some reason it's laggy even on the title screen.
Something wrong with my video drivers?

All of the information I know:
The computer is a Dell Dimension 3000
RAM: 256mb? Gnome System Monitor says 247.1mb, SWAP: about 730mb
Processor: Intel Celeron 2.40GHz

Debian Release 6.0 (squeeze)
Kernel Linux 2.6.32-5-686

Only linux on the machine.

I am using an older Dell Inspiron 2200. I believe the chipset in my wireless adapter is indeed Broadcomm, so hopefully that will help direct any responses.

Fedora :: Cold Boots Often Take Up To 10 Attempts Before The Computer Successfully Boots?

Oct 29, 2010

my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:

the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.

finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.

usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.

this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.

right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.

the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??

Fedora :: Amarok Version Mismatch Detected (NVidia Driver)

Jun 19, 2010

I attempted to run amarok from the menu and found it would never start there was no activity, I then tried to start it from the command line and I recieved this error..

Version mismatch detected between the NVIDIA libGL.so
and libGLcore.so shared libraries (libGL.so version:
195.36.31; libGLcore.so version: 195.36.24).
Please try reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

This is a fresh install of Fedora 13, the kmod-nvidia drivers were just fixed I assume cause I tried to install them for a few days and they would fail. Well I guess they finally fixed the Nvidia drivers for 2.6.33.5-124.fc13.x86_64 but it has broken amarok..

Red Hat / Fedora :: Will Not Boot After Video Driver Update

Mar 28, 2011

However, I have had this issue with Windows computers as well, I just don't know how to beat around this problem and fix it with the new OS.

For starters, I have a Sony Vaio laptop (VGN-NS295J) that's running a ATI Mobility 3430 Video card on F14 64bit.

From the beginning, my device was not recognized with a good driver, so I started jumping through hoops reading forums of how to properly install this driver and get rid of the on board video. After I was successful (so I thought) I rebooted my system, and now after Fedora finishes loading the operating system, the screen goes gray and I can start typing in whatever I want.

I can still log in by Ctrl+Alt+F2 or whatever it is, but I'm stuck to text, and don't know my way around well enough yet.

I believe the issue is that it's trying to treat my laptop as two moniters, or defaulted my monitor incorrectly perhaps? At least this is what always happened to me in the past with Windows.

I just fresh installed F14 today, so I don't have anything of importance on the HD.

*UPDATE* Okay, so i've figured out hitting escape lists two versions of Linux there off the boot. The top one repeats the message I've just given, and the second one will go to the Fedora screen right after the boot (where it fills the emblem diagonally), then the screen flashes like it's starting to run my video card, and the screen goes black.

Fedora :: FC 11 - Video Driver Update Causes Lockup On Boot

Oct 22, 2009

I have a new Fedora 11 install with all updates working on my: Dell XPS M1330 laptop with nVidia GeForce 8400M GS

I wanted to install compiz fusion on Gnome so I followed these step by step instructions from:

Fedora refused to boot, locking up during the process.

Here is what happens...

After updates I had 3 options at boot up:

A) If I choose the TOP one (newest) it will boot up to a black screen and nothing else, I get a white block which moves with mouse. I cant get a shell and any key I hit just echoes back...ctr-alt-del will result in normal shutdown process displaying.

If I watch the services start (F1) I see all -OK- except: nvidia.ko: Driver already enabled

The boot continues with all OK until it gets to:
STARTING atd:
at which time the screen flashes for about 7 seconds and locks up.

B) If I choose MIDDLE boot option and watch the boot process I see most services start OK except:

-[OK]

Checking for module nvidia.ko [FAILED]
nvidia.ko for kernel 2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i686.PAE was not found [WARNING]
The nvidia driver will not be enabled until found [WARNING]
Driver already disabled

-[OK]

Then the services continue on with [OK] until a few seconds later the screen halts with a mess of colors and symbols on screen and system stops booting. Any key pressed simply echoes back with no other result. Again ctrl-alt-del refreshes screen and shutdown of services proceeds normally.
