View 4 RepliesI am trying to set up an internet only Wi-Fi station using Ubuntu 10.04 so I can get on the internet while my wife does her school homework online. I was wondering if there is a driver for the ZyXEL G-302 H/W v-2 wireless card available? I have checked several sites and can only find v3 drivers.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI run Fedora 13 on my HP dv6000 Pavillion. I am looking for a way to remotely access my work station running Windows XP from my Fedora machine. Most of the information I found explained how to access a Linux box from a Windows environment, and the one place I found that showed the other way around was incomprehensible.
Our company servers run Windows XP, and we have successfully installed remote desktops on other laptops running Windows.I thought of running the remote desktop from a Virtual Machine Windows session, but it seems a cumbersome way to do it.
I installed 10.04 (clean install) on a 250G drive (partitioned to 107G for the system files). It was working fine, until I wanted to install Window$ for the use of Adobe stuff. I popped the Windows XP disc in, it loaded its files, then I tried to choose a partition for installation. There was an error saying that I can't do that, and needed to delete a partition blah blah. I thought it was too much trouble, so I quit and just wanted to use my 10.04. Booted, and it says "Error booting operating system" I WAS SHOCKED.
I tried to install grub (but don't need that right? I DO NOT want to dual boot now), but the usual method ( the sudo grub; root (hd0.0)...) doesn't work ,because something like "stage1" is missing. I tried many methods by still the same error. The reason I do not want a clean install is that I did many fixes on my 10.04 so that it would work with my EeePC 1001pxd, and I do not want to go through that again. I will be checking my email frequently on other computers if I have a chance.
I want to upgrade to 10.10, but on the update manager it says it's gonna install 179 new packages that I don't want/neeed (such as open office that takes too much space), so I'm wondering if theres a way to select which one of the new packages I want to install, instead of all of that?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to run an iptv station for my dorm. I know I can serve multicast so that's not a problem. The station will serve out podcasts and other cc licensed content. The target endpoint is xbmc- a media center. So far I know that I need to serve an rtp stream over udp that's streaming an mpeg-4 avc main or high profile with aac ( or ac3 ?) audio. I've had some luck using vlc with vlm to stream but it seems limited. What are my other options? Everything has to run on Linux- hopefully open source. How can I use playlists and not live streams? What are my software options?

And if user "anne" is logged and request name resolution, that request should be done to another dns server. To say it briefly, the idea would be configure selective dns server use depending on system users.

After downloading and viewing a PDF, when I try to print either the current page or a page range, it insists on printing the full document. I could not find this bug documented anywhere. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest fixes etc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've set up a multiboot with XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Ubuntu 10.04.1, installed in that order in five individual partitions on a single hard drive (fifth is for the Ubuntu swap area). Everything is working well: On boot, the GRUB menu comes up first, with the usual Ubuntu choices and "Windows 7 (loader)". When I select that last option, I'm then given the Windows boot menu that allows "Earlier Version of Windows", "Windows 7", and "Microsoft Windows Vista". They all boot properly, and I don't mind having to use the second menu. I would like to reinstall XP (only) to the same partition it now occupies. I suspect this will mess up my current booting scheme, correct? Is there a way I can prevent this, by saving the GRUB configuration or whatever?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen booting Debian, you'll see it printing a lot of information about the system variables and such.
I don't really need to see all that, so I'd like to modify some scripts to make sure that on boot, it just does what it has to do, without printing it on the screen. Just something I fancy.
Offcourse, still seeing errors would be nice. But that long slur of text, I could do without.
I've tried looking it up, but I can't find documentation on this specific thing anywhere.
iv been looking around at the different Linux systems particularity the smaller ones such as DSL, Slax and Puppy Linux. However i need a Linux distribution that doesn't have a GUI desktop environment just the plain old terminal to work on. The system would have to be able to boot from a USB drive also. If anyone knows a systems that fits those requirements or something else related please post. Also what file system is best for USB drives for booting systems?

So am trying to give you to installation method for both Operating Systems. I hope it will help to you for easy installation for Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 in Dual booting method.

I have an HP EliteBook 8540p laptop with associated docking station. It is running Ubuntu 10.04. Until now I have been successfully running TwinView with the nvidia-195.36.24 drivers - using the built-in LCD screen and an external LCD monitor, connected via an analog VGA cable.I've changed the screen over to a larger resolution Philips LCD, and it works fine over VGA.
However the image is not as sharp as I'm used to with other monitors, so I'm trying to get it working over the DVI port on the laptop docking station. However I have been quite unsuccessful in getting a picture to appear on the external monitor - Xorg is able to read the EDID information from the monitor, and according to Xorg.0.log has absolutely no problems with finding a valid mode and choosing this monitor as "DFP-1", alongside "DFP-0" (laptop display). But no matter what I do I can't get a picture. Xorg.0.log has no errors.
I have unsuccessfully tried: various combinations of xorg.conf options to set "ConnectedMonitor", "CustomEDID" with a EDID .bin downloaded over VGA, etc.a colleague has the exact same laptop and monitor, and has it running fine. However using his xorg.conf still produces no picture.nvidia-settings - tried lots of things a different DVI-connected monitorIt's as if the DVI port is fully functional in every way but its output is somehow disabled. I've also tried other monitors, they don't work either, yet do with a VGA cable.
EDIT: I have checked the DVI cable anything else in terms of enabling a DVI port.
My friend has a HP Pavilion dv2699ea (dv2500 series - somehow *shrugs*) that has stopped working. It's a Core2Duo laptop with a Nvidia GPU. The unit is no longer under warranty. Problems first started a few days ago with the laptop showing corrupted graphics in Windows and BSOD'ing after a few minutes of use. I tried booting to an Ubuntu LiveCD which worked for a while before succuming and crashing as well. The freezing/graphics corruption/BSODing does seem somewhat heat related (CPU runs at ~95'c under load) however I believe that if it is heat related, then it's already damaged components inside.
Now the system has corrupted graphics on bootup[1], including booting Ubuntu[2], and neither operating systems will boot at all (Windows can sometimes get logged in before showing a black screen and becoming unresponsive. Ubuntu just looks like [3] after X starts). (See comment below for links.)
The fact the problem occurs both under Linux and Windows says to me this is not a driver issue. I have run Memtest which passed fine and none of this seems HDD related as I managed to get ~30GB of data off the system before it finally gave up the ghost.
She has been using it repeatedly without giving it adequate ventilation for years (i.e. on the bed, or on a pillow), so it's my opinion that the system board has probably warped over years of cooling/heating and that's causing this current problem. If that is the case, then I can buy a replacement system board and fit it myself, saving about £200 over the cost of an out-of-warranty HP repair. Of course, I don't want to make her spend £100 on a replacement part for it to be the wrong thing, hence asking for a second opinion here!
Hopefully I've covered all the bases here. I'm a former IT support guy myself, so I've tried all the dumb stuff (driver updates, examining memory dumps from BSODs [one 'unrecoverable hardware error', three relating to the graphics card], etc).
just like most Linux distributions, will happily co-exist on a hard disk with just about any version of Windows. This is a concept known as dual-booting. Essentially, when you power up your PC you will be presented with a menu which provides the option to boot either Ubuntu Linux or Windows. Obviously you can only run one operating system at a time, but it is worth noting that the files on the Windows partition of your disk drive will be available to you from Ubuntu Linux regardless of whether your windows partition was formatted using NTFS. To day I have installed Latest Windows 7 and Latest Ubuntu 10.10 on my office system (Dual booting). This two operating system which I installed in HP dx 7200 micro towers.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been a Java developer for some time now and I always wind up removing a bunch of stuff from /etc/alternatives in favor of one of several freshly downloaded official Sun JDKs I've installed myself. I don't like circumventing things unnecessarily, though and I also don't like "re-inventing the wheel", either. If I had a better idea of how that system worked, perhaps it would not be required. I mean I usually write a script to switch between jdk's for different projects but perhaps I would not need a script if I knew how this worked
