As most of us know when you start the machine with the Install Disc in the drive you get a menu that reads:
Welcome To Fedora 15!
Install a new system or upgrade an existing system
Install system with basic video driver
Rescue installed system
Boot from local drive
Memory test
But when you try to boot the install DVD on and EFI based Mac...you only get
Booting Fedora 15 in 3...2...1 ...and then the system hangs.
If any users are having trouble with Fedora Install Media...you can usually use the Install Media from a previous release! In this case, I used the Fedora 14 (64-Bit) disc to install Fedora 15 by simply replacing the 'F14' with a 'F15' in the URLs of the Install and Update repository dialog boxes.

Just upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. upgraded from update manager. System would not boot. Booted live cd and used the 9.10 menu.lst. Now boots but takes a long time. I don't know much about the kernel. I assume they are listed in the /boot directory and are called by menu.lst (dual boot w/ XP) (btw: I am ready to get rid of XP once I get this fixed). 9.10 appears to use 2.6.31-20-generic, therefore, I assume 10.04 uses 2.6.32-25-generic.

I am a convert to OpenSUSE having recently ditched Windows. I really like the latest version of OpenSUSE but keep experiencing this annoying system freeze every 20 minutes or so. I get absolutely no response from the keyboard, although I do have the mouse working. However the end result is ALWAYS a cold boot
I am running SUSE on a spare machine as follows:
DELL Optiplex GX270 standard machine with integrated peripheral devices etc. Chipsets are all up to date and the hard drive is performing without fault. 1.25 Gb Ram

I'm running Slackware 13 with a custom kernel based off of 2.6.32.3. I tend to leave my system on 24/7, as well as my web browser. Originally it was Firefox and now it is Google's Chrome. Usually about a day of leaving the web browser open my HD activity spikes so high that I can barely do anything on the system until I kill the web browser. This has been happening with both Firefox AND Chrome! As soon as the browser processes are killed, the system returns back to normal.

It's getting really annoying now. If I leave the netbook idle for like 2 mins it will lock the keyring and ask me to log back in.
Is there any way I can disable this?

I requested a Live CD from ubuntu. when it arrived i booted from it to try Ubuntu without installing. i booted from the live CD for about 5 times. now when i want to install Ubuntu it just hangs when the booting screen appears (when its written Ubuntu and 5 dots are flashing behind the word) now i dont know what is the problem, i have also tried a different CD-ROM but same result. the CD is new/ scratch less but it just wont boot. hangs up all the time. Now i dont know how to install Ubuntu. 1- i can make a bootable USB. i downloaded the ISO and made a bootable USB with Universal USB installer, set my computer to boot from removable but that too didnt work. 2- or i can write my own cd. i will do that but i just wanted to find out why the CD doesnt work after working for 5 times.

So I am basically just curious about this, but is there a way to prevent fork bombs from bringing the system to grinding halt in Ubuntu, without setting hard limits on the resources available to users? I read about fork bombs on Wikipedia, and being the masochist I am (and not having any unsaved work), I tried entering those 13 characters into terminal. Wow. I have never seen a computer freeze up so fast. What really peaked my curiosity is that the same fork bomb has almost no effect on the performance of Mac OSX (10.6). I know that one can limit the availability of resources to specific users. Is that essentially what Snow Leopard is doing?

I can get connected to the Internet when I reboot the system, but the connection usually fails after within 10 mins. However, even then the network manager says it's connected. Never reconnect, manually or automatically.

Instead of using sudo to start the listener, first use su - oracle, then start the listener.
su - oracle
password: oracle
lsnrctl start LISTENER
lsnrctl status
I was then able to bring up the Oracle home page a few minutes later with: [URL]

I this problem where my laptop hangs up or suddenly restarts. Currently Iam using Fedora 15 but I had this problem when I was using fedora 13. I upgraded to 15 thinking that may be its been resolved in 15.
I have searched for possible solutions. my system software is up-to-date including the kernel which I took from the test repositeries..
I checked /var/log/messages for possible clues but I have not been able to figure it out. Below is the output of /var/log/messages files just before the laptop freezes or restarts.. so far the below output has been consistent with the event...
Code:
May 10 22:44:11 localhost ntpd[1622]: Listening on routing socket on fd #22 for interface updates
May 10 22:44:11 localhost ntpd[1622]: 0.0.0.0 c016 06 restart
May 10 22:44:11 localhost ntpd[1622]: 0.0.0.0 c012 02 freq_set kernel 16.857 PPM

I am running du -h --max-depth=1 and it is hanging, presumably processing a large folder.
Could you give me a list of the large folders in the Redhat OS?
Is there any way to check if du has failed or is hanging/processing a folder?
How long should du -h --max-depth=1 take on 40GB of data?
Solved, it was taking a long time on a 29gb /var/log folder

I want to install fedora 10 on my PC. But after booting from DVD a screen comes which tells me to:
" - to install or upgrade in graphical mode, press the <ENTER> key - use the function key listed below for more information [F1-Main] [F2-Options] [F3-General] [F4-Kernel] [F5-Rescue]"
when I press "Enter" nothing happens, even the function keys does not work & after some time PC restarts. The DVD is ok I have checked it in my friends PC, it works on his PC very well. My PC configuration is:

I have tried to install fedora 10 in "virtual box 2.1.4" but the result is same.

On a few VMs. Sometimes, when powering them on I get the GNU GRUB menu...
Code:
GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
etc
But there is no countdown for a default boot. It just hangs here. Indefinitely. Until I make a choice by pressing the enter key with "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" highlighted (default). I don't know if this is because the VM may not have been shutdown properly or what the case is, but this is unacceptable as I need these systems to continue to boot and get back on line regardless of the reason they were powered off.

Process and problem description:
1. downloaded ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso and burned to CD.
2. re-booted.
3. "ubuntu" is displayed center screen with five dots below text (sequencing white and red).
4. screen jumps to alternating horizontal bars (green & purple plus green & pink sections) about 1/4 inch high.
5. cd activity light stops blinking.
6. no standard desktop ever appears.
System:
- Asus A8N-VM CSM with integrated nVidia C51PV [GeForce 6150] display
- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 3200+ CPU
- 2.5GB DDR 333 MHz memory
Has anyone else run across this? Obviously, trying to convince a friend to switch to ubuntu using this CD would not be good.

I joined a company as an IT staff 2 months plus back. I now encounters a problem that the booting up hangs at the time when it is starting domino services. I have no clue where to look at and duno where to start checking. A little description of the server. : It's a lotus notes domino server for employees webmail service. -> Now it is down. it's an external dns server: recently high volumes of query cache denied surfaces. it's also our proxy server. The only way to get it up and running is to turn off domino service. The system is running still with high volumes of queries I last checked.
Althrough it can boot up now and DNS & proxy are running, I couldn't access the system anymore. It will hang when I attempt to log in from the command prompt. Below is an illustration:
iasaix login: root -> I attempt to log in using root user
password: xxxxxxxx -> I keyed in my password
-> The cursor comes down and just keeps blinking and nothing happens.
Remote access is not possible as it has sshd disabled by default. Our employees cannot access their webmail now, which is a major issue.

When booting Debian, you'll see it printing a lot of information about the system variables and such.
I don't really need to see all that, so I'd like to modify some scripts to make sure that on boot, it just does what it has to do, without printing it on the screen. Just something I fancy.
Offcourse, still seeing errors would be nice. But that long slur of text, I could do without.
I've tried looking it up, but I can't find documentation on this specific thing anywhere.

iv been looking around at the different Linux systems particularity the smaller ones such as DSL, Slax and Puppy Linux. However i need a Linux distribution that doesn't have a GUI desktop environment just the plain old terminal to work on. The system would have to be able to boot from a USB drive also. If anyone knows a systems that fits those requirements or something else related please post. Also what file system is best for USB drives for booting systems?
