I am a bit confused about a dual booting system. I Already have windows 7 on my computer and wish to install ubuntu 11.04 but I keep reading about Grub 2. Does grub automatically install with ubuntu or do I need to install it prior to installing ubutu ?

is it ever possible to do dual booting with grub(legacy) ever at all!. it is possible provided i take some pain, here is the link of that post [URL] i was coward and weak i didn't try that out then. but i did try it out. now so if u haven't seen the post .... I've installed Fedora 15 desktop(Gnome) with physical Logical volume called vg_fedora lv_root(ext4) ,lv_swap and lv_home(ext4), with 500MB /boot partition and had about 200GB free hard disk space ... so i wanted to install Scientific Linux 6.1 (because our school uses RHEL 6.1)
so, while running the installer I made (added) a logical volume lv_Scientific with ext4 FS and made its mount point (/) and used the MBR /boot which overwrote the Fedora /boot (completely OK and was as expected) i restarted after installation i got SL log in and as per the directions of the thread i copied the boot stanza from grub.conf of fedora 15 (which i already had copied and pasted into a text file and copied it from there)and pasted it into grub.conf of SL you may ask why did i choose same physical LVM too save swap space ... if i had made another physical LVM i had to make another swap ( i like LVM ... its cool)
completely unexpected happened Fedora now boots but not SL when grub starts i get this error 27 unrecognised commad and when i press <enter> i get grub menu with SL and fedora when i press on Fedora it works well i get my fedora login and i did login .. everything works fine but when i press SL it goes to the previous black screen grub error 27

just like most Linux distributions, will happily co-exist on a hard disk with just about any version of Windows. This is a concept known as dual-booting. Essentially, when you power up your PC you will be presented with a menu which provides the option to boot either Ubuntu Linux or Windows. Obviously you can only run one operating system at a time, but it is worth noting that the files on the Windows partition of your disk drive will be available to you from Ubuntu Linux regardless of whether your windows partition was formatted using NTFS. To day I have installed Latest Windows 7 and Latest Ubuntu 10.10 on my office system (Dual booting). This two operating system which I installed in HP dx 7200 micro towers.

I would like to know if what I am thinking is possible and, if so how to set it up. I have a Compaq Workstation that I have loaded on it VMWare ESX 3.5 and FreeBSD. I have successfully edited the grub menu.lst file to boot into either, but i would like to select my choice from another machine running Win7 using Putty ( Since I only have one monitor and keyboard!
Once my workstation loads the grub, presenting the options of OS's, is there a way using putty or some other software GUI on my Win7 machine to see that grub menu and then select which OS the workstation should boot into? ( ESX 3.5 or FreeBSD - This would come in handy so I dont have to disconnect my monitor, keyboard and mouse each time just to select the desired OS!!!)
I want to set up grub for a dual boot system of xp and vista. The thing is that I have vista installed and would have to install it ance again after setting up XP in order to use the microsoft bootloader. And secondly I slowly want to get into linux...
This is how I tried it: I have four partitions on my HD and want to install the Bootloader on /dev/sda3. I started up the ubuntu live cd, mounted partition3, opened the console and tried this command line which I found in a tutorial
grub-install --root-directory=/media/hda3 --recheck /dev/hda However I get the following error message:
mkdir: cannot create directory '/media/hda3/boot': No such file or directory
I'm dual-booting windows 7 on (hd0,0) and Fedora 13 on (hd0,4) and it's working fine until I repaired my windows 7. Afiter I did the repair on my windows 7, The booting sequence now skips the grub menu and automatically boots into windows without allowing me to take my pick.

View 9 Replies View RelatedRight, so I've looked high and low for the answer to this problem and haven't found it, although I've found a million and a half threads about grub especially when it comes to dual booting windows. Which I'm not. What I am though, I suspect, is an idiot who shouldn't mess around with my computer at 4 am.
So the problem is every time I turn on my pc, grub tells me it can't find a file system and goes into recovery mode. Can't boot into ubuntu at all. Am using the live disk to type this.
I also think I know why grub is doing this, I was dual booting windows before, I had windows installed originally, added ubuntu to a new partition. Was having problems with grub. Figured that reinstalling it wouldn't be a bad idea, it might fix it. In that process I did something rather stupid, I accidentally installed grub to my other internal hard drive. There is no operating system on it. Just movies, music, etc. The problem, I think, is that my second hard drive is sda, and the one with my os is sdb, which I suspect means that grub is loading from sda and finding no operating system, rather than from sdb. (It's like that because my larger drive wouldn't fit into the sda slot on my computer, long story.) How do I remove grub from sda?
I am having trouble getting FEdora 15 running on my MacBook Pro. I had Fedora 15 installed before on this MBP before, so I know it works. I basically followed the good old instructions of
1. Create a Windows partition in bootcamp (rEFIt was already installed from trying to get ubuntu running)
2. Boot from disk and install in Windows partition with bootloader on installed on the / partition
3. Install, reboot, and resync the MBR using rEFIt partitioning tool
4. Shut down the computer and start up on the parition you installed linux on
Now I get a grub error code...
I'm kinda new to Linux. My problem is that a new Fedora O/S entry is added onto grub everytime I receive an update on Fedora (I think). Eg:
Fedora 15 15.40.0-4 ...
Fedora 15 15.40.0-3 ...
Fedora 15 15.38.0-0 ...
Windows 7
How do I stop this? Ideally I'll only have two entries, Fedora 15 and Windows 7 where Windows is set as the default primary o/s to boot up. The current method I use is to fiddle around with that grub file and set default to entry 3, which used to be Windows 7 but is now a Fedora (which means Fedora is now set to default boot up).

I'm just a little bit concerned about the versions of Grub overwriting the openSUSE version or theme or something.
Would it work okay if I just shrink my openSUSE partition and then set the Ubuntu installer to install Ubuntu to the free space only or do I need to edit the grub file and stuff?
i'm trying to install 98se to a 110gb partition so i can dual boot with ubuntu 10 for 98 and 100 for ubuntu after the resize. when i tried making multiple partitions manually for ubutnu putting it on separate partitions i got grub boot errors. the problem i am having every time i try to install 98 it forces me to scandisk it then i have to hit space bar to fix every error i thinks it finds wich is impossible to press it 2 million times. now if I format in a non 98 format and tell it to format in lba it keeps asking for a boot disc, i burned one off but, still kept asking for it. if i do it in non lba, it only saw 2 gigs in 98 and when i went to install ubuntu it was a giant hard drive no partitions. i did try making 3 fat 32s 1 for 98 and then swap and linux partition but, the i got grub errors 17 and 18.
the problem is that bios a cap of 130gb for each drive or in this case partition. it's 320gb WD blue Scorpio. the short i want to dual boot 98se and ubuntu 9.04 with 2 fat32 partitions for storage 110 +100 + 80 = 320 also some visuals.
I'm not consistently able to boot into Ubuntu Lucid on my new dual boot (w/ Win7) setup. Machine is a Dell XPS 1645 laptop. Usually it takes 1-3 tries of hard shut down and restart before the OS starts up. Boot info script results are below. Windows starts up fine everytime. What I usually get is this: Dell startup screen, then Grub2 menu, then after selecting Linux kernal a blinking cursor at upper left of monitor and it just hangs.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have lucid lnyx installed as my main system and added natty on a seperate drive. after installing, the new grub detected lynx & i was able to boot into each without any problem. after doing some tweaking on natty (changed run level), it didn't boot properly so i reverted to the old config via rescue disk. after rebooting, the old grub menu didn't show & it loaded lynx automatically.
i tried the suggestion from another post changed the hidden menu and updated grub but it didn't detect natty (below).

I've been trying to get a dual-boot system with a truecrypted Windows partition and grub 2 in combination to work successfully and to date, I haven't had much luck. I'm using the grub 2 version from Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.I understand from searching through Google that there is presently no easy way to chainload the Truecrypt boot loader from Grub 2 in a similiar way that was done with Grub 1. This is because the Grub 2 payload is much larger and actually overwrites some of the Truecrypt boot loader, preventing it from starting.Does anybody know what might be going wrong here? I've been looking for ages now and can't seem to find any solution to this problem apart from restoring the Truecrypt loader to the hard disk and trying to chainload Grub 2 from Truecrypt. I'd rather use Grub 2 as the main loader though as Ubuntu Linux will be the main operating system in use.

I currently have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed on my PC. The details of how it got installed I cannot explain... I installed it on a HD that was not partitioned and I accepted all the defaults that Ubuntu suggested. So as far as I know right now Ubuntu "owns" the whole HD.
I now would like to create a dual-boot system by installing openSUSE 11.3 alongside Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. By reading things here and there, my guess is that I need to create a partition for openSUSE by shrinking the one for Ubuntu. But I am really not sure.
So I downloaded the CD version (GNOME) only of openSUSE, launched the installer and the process came to the following suggestions which is basically all Greek to me:
* Delete partition /dev/sda1
* Create root volume /dev/sda1 with ext4
* Create volume /dev/sda3 for /home with ext4
* Use /dev/sda5 as swap
As I said before, what I would like to do is install openSUSE side-by- side with Ubuntu and create a dual-boot system. I do not want to delete Ubuntu! I got scared by that "Delete partition /dev/sda1" thing mentioned above and so I aborted the installation.
What is the installer suggesting? Has it realized that I already have Ubuntu installed and that I want to create a dual-boot system?
I'm trying to set up a share for my system which is dual booting windows 7 64bit and ubuntu 32bit 10.10 What i did
-Install Samba from the Ubuntu software center
- In System->Admin->Samba add the share for my /Home/Downloads
- In smb.conf i edited the workgroup to that of my windows7 workgroup
- In the home folder right clicked on Downloads and in sharing option i allowed others create and delete
privileges and Guest access ( security not an issue). Then allowed Nautilus to add the permissions automatically. Now from what I have seen if i go into windows 7 in the network section i should have a Ubuntu share appearing but i don't. The only devices which show are the router and the computer itself ( of which ubuntu isn't in) Is there anything i missed or how do i access these files ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently recieved Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition CD-ROM through snail-mail after requesting a copy online and I want to install it on my laptop, although I wish to keep Vista which is on it now.
My laptop has a 250GB hard drive. Although when in Vista this is represented as two separate drives each of 110GB, (C or ACER and (D or DATA.
Using the CD, I start the installation and everything is straightforward and self explanatory, until I get stuck at step 4...
Where I am told by the ubuntu installer: "This computer has several operating systems on it." (I'm confused now, I thought it had one, Vista.)
Beneath I am shown a bar representing my disk space which is divided between...
I am given the option to use the entire disk: 'SCSI1 (0,0,0)(sda) - 250.1GB ATA WDC WD2500BEVT - 2', (and from the mention of 250BG in the name I'm assuming this is one disk and not the two separate drives named C: & D: in Vista.) ...along with a warning - "This will delete Windows Vista (loader), Windows Vista (loader), Microsoft Windows XP Embedded and install Ubuntu 9.04". (The aforementioned "several operating systems" obviously.)
But I wish to keep Vista, so I select the option to "specify partitions manually" and am brought to a screen named 'Prepare Partitions', where there is a table somewhat like this:
I am then given the option for "New partition table", and if I select any of the bottom four devices I can 'edit partition' or 'delete partition'.
Selecting the device /dev/sda3 (because it is the one that I'm guessing has no operating system data on it, judging by the previous screen) and choosing 'edit partition', allows me the following options...to create a new partition size, to select what I want to use the partition as. (There are also two options for formating a partition, which is a checkbox, and Mount point. These are both greyed out.)
When I look at the 'Use as:' option, within 'edit partition', the drop down box allows me to use the partition in the following ways:
- do not use the partition
- swap area
- NTFS
- FAT 32 file system
- FAT16 file system
- XFS journaling file system
- ReiserFS journaling file system
- Ext2 file system
- Ext4 journaling file system
- Ext3 journaling file system

I'm very new to Linux but when I first installed it, I downloaded the Start-Up Manager so I could change the boot order. I have a dual boot Windows-Linux, I set the default as Windows. Recently my computer started booting to the system memory test in the grub menu instead of Windows. When I try to open the Start-Up Manager now it asks me for the password as usual and then does not start. How I would change it back to windows for the default? I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi am having some issues with dual booting my SL6.1 and Windows. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)
The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen.
Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.
My current setup is:
Disk 1: Solid-State:
Boot Partition
SL6 LVM1: Root Partition
Disk 2: Hard Drive:
SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root)
Disk 3: Hard Drive:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.
I just formatted the partition that contains fedora 15 using windows.. Now when I attempt to boot my PC the grub bootloader comes up and I cannot boot anything.... The error that I get|| i feel i need a boot command to boot boot win7 from grub... grub propmts me " minimal bash-like line editing is supported. for the first word tab possible list a possible commands completion anywhere else tab list
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Opensuse 11.3 on a separate partition to vista on my Acer 5115. It runs fine but the GRUB boot loader failed to show the Vista OS. I tried to add it by editing menu.As far as I can see (and I don't have much experience with these things) the Vista OS is there, on sda5, but doesn't boot correctly because the winload.exe is in the wrong directory. Why the sdax numbers are all rearranged is a mystery too, but I have reinstalled vista several times so that could be why.I don't have a vista recovery cd (wasn't given one), is there any way to fix this within opensuse (which works fine)?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am currently rebuilding a couple laptops and a desktop to dual boot Windows and Suse 11.2. Windows is installed on partition 1. On the laptops, the build goes fine and dual boot with grub is OK. No issues. But on the desktop, the exact same build (after all the on-line updates, etc) fails with "Operating system not found" on the final (and first) boot. It seems that the Suse 11.2 build is somehow resetting the active partition and the boot does not see grub or Windows. When I reset partition #1 back to "active, only Windows loads. So I guess I need to fix this by reinstalling grub. Or use the Windows boot loader.
(1) Where is grub located on my system?
(2) What partiton is the Linux master Boot record If I wanted to use the Windows boot loader and do the following command to grab the 512 bytes I need:
dd if=/dev/sna? of=grub.bin bs=512 count=1
