General :: Selfcheck Request Failed For Amanda Backup Of RHEL 4
Jun 4, 2010
I installed amanda on a client that uses Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. When I do an amcheck from the server, I get this:
Amanda Backup Client Hosts Check
--------------------------------
WARNING: 192.168.3.23: selfcheck request failed: recv error: Connection reset by peer
Client check: 1 host checked in 0.022 seconds. 1 problem found.
I am using bsdtcp. I get an ACK error if I switch the client to bsd authentication. I read that I should enter servers adress to hosts file in /etc/ directory?

I had rhn supported system and there I cant find any respos in /etc/respos.d/ directory. If I enter yum list still I can see the list of rpms. Now my question is I need to install request tracker in this system. I had d/l the .gzip file and extracted too. Its asking to make a repository. Now I had made one repo in /repos.d/ dir. But didn't able to find out what to write in baseurl (had also extracted the packages in /var/ftp/pub/ so do I need to write ftp://ip/ or what). ftp/http. I had extracted the packages in /root.

I'm fairly competent with Linux at this stage and as we have just installed a new Red Hat 5.5 Server to host our DB at work it has basically fallen to me to sort everything out. The only thing I'm not 100% on is a backup strategy at the moment. Basically, the server / DB is not that big and as such we will be doing a full backup every night of the whole file system.
As it is there are several LVM partitions across several disks (these are all virtual both on the SAN and as a virtual machine). My question is what would be the best way to create a full backup overnight of the whole server including all the partitions (or a backup of each partition I'm guessing is more feasible). This doesn't seem to be too difficult to do, but my main problem is restoring the backup.
Is it a simple matter of basically .tar'ing the whole / filesystem? and if so, to restore can I just use a live CD to restore the partition that is needed? How does LVM affect the restoration process? I have looked at Amanda as a backup solution, though we wont be backing up directly to tape (backup to a share location then copy to the tape drive).

After my 8.04 debacle here:I basically gave up on trying to write an install guide for Hardy and Amanda. Others had done it better and with how muddled I was by the end of getting a working server, I wasn't sure I could repeat it.Now in Lucid, I've managed to get another working amanda server going, I'm fairly sure I can repeat it and but I question:Installation with 'apt-get install amanda-server' uses the user backup in the group backup.Installation of the ZWC client uses the user amandabackup. while thankfully ZWC has included reg keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREmandaWC1.0Install BackupUserHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREmandaWC1.0Install RecoveryUserto change the user on the client, this is messy, requires regedit (which normally is locked out by group policy), editing the service in service.msc and creation of a new user account named backup in addition to the installer's default on each client. The actual question is:1) Is there a reason for the use of backup:backup? (rather than amandabackup:disk or amandabackup:backup)
2) Is there any sort of flag that could be set, script to change the user within the repo atinstall time.Or generally an easier way of doing this than compiling each time I do an install.

I have some issue with my amanda backup server, which is connecting with Scalar Quantum i500 via FC. I got the error as below 3 days ago.
These dumps were to tape 000289.
*** A TAPE ERROR OCCURRED: [No more writable valid tape found].
Normally I will load the proper tapes and run the amflush to push stuff from the holding disk to tapes manually. However this time amflush in this case did not help, Amanda immediately responded with an out of tape error again.
Meanwhile I got some errors from dmesg as well
st3: Error 18 (sugg. bt 0x0, driver bt 0x0, host bt 0x0).

i setup the following script ro run each night (12am) as a cron on the main server:
if mount | grep -q '/home';
then
rsync -ranv --delete /home/ 138.73.56.12:/home;
[code]....
the main server is running on a dell poweredge 2600. The script rsyncs to a virtualised duplicate running on a hp dl380. when i set this script up and begn running data started going missing from the main server. if new files had been created the files by staff they would go missing, if data was added to existing files prior to activating the script the new changes made to that file would be lost.i just cant understand why this happened. as soon as i turned the script off after a few days it was all back to normal but the data that had gone missing had gone missing.
i just wanted to know if this could be a disk read/write issue, was the script running too soon not allowing data to be written before it can be backed up? could it bee memory? i just dont know. another developed occured after a few days of all this happening, which was one of our hard disk from the main server started mis behaving and flashing amber (attention).

We have a working backup script which gave no problems ever. But recently the backup is failed giving following error messages,
Statement just before the error occured was, /usr/bin/rsh remoteserver1 /tmp/backup/script.scr
1. The system has no more ptys. Ask your system administrator to create more.
2. The system only has a finite number of ptys and you have many of them in use. The usual reason for this is that you forgot (or didn't know) to call "wait" after closing each of them.
So it looks like the system is falling short of the /dev/pty ...atleast I think so. Dont know the real reason.

I'm working on a old piece of code on linux, after compiling without porblem at the execution I have this response:
src/xproject/xproject: Ok, a color display! :-)
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 78 (X_CreateColormap)
Serial number of failed request: 7
Current serial number in output stream: 15
looking at the source code I think the problem is related at the depth of my system 24 bit and the depth of this old piece of code 8 bit. Unfortunately also I don't have experience in programming the XVideo and if someone can give me some help in programming the XVideo interface

Basically I want to change the resolution on my computer as the desktop is partially lost off of the screen. The needed resolution is not available so I am attempting to add a new resolution. I have used the [URL] for information on how to do this. I am completely new to Ubuntu and entering code so a TON of the results online have meant jibberish to me as people leave out the basics which I cannot find. Here is what I've done so far in the terminal...
I enter:
xrandr
I get:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 698mm x 392mm
1920x1080 60.0*+
1920x1080i 30.0
1280x720 60.0
2020x1180_60.00 (0x169) 200.0MHz
h: width 2024 start 2160 end 2376 total 2728 skew 0 clock 73.3KHz
v: height 1180 start 1183 end 1193 total 1224 clock 59.9Hz
I enter:
xrandr --newmode <Mode''Line>
I get:
bash: syntax error near unexpected token 'newline'
Already I see an error message though without knowing what else to do I try to continue the code as follows...
I enter:
cvt 2020 1180
I get:
# 2024x1180 59.90 Hz (CVT) hsync: 73.31 kHz; pclk: 200.00 MHz
Modeline "2024x1180_60.00" 200.00 2024 2160 2376 2728 1180 1183 1193 1224 -hsync +vsync
At this point I see it shows 2024x1180 when I actually entered 2020x1180 which I find odd, though I try the next part with both 2024 and 2020 with same results.
I enter:
xrandr --newmode "2020x1180_60.00" 200.00 2024 2160 2376 2728 1180 1183 1193 1224 -hsync +vsync
I normally get no response after with a blank cursor, though one time I got:
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 150 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (RRCreateMode)
Serial number of failed request: 27
Current serial number in output stream: 27

I recently installed two PC with debian lenny (kernel 2.6.26). One is called serveur-debian1 and the second one serveur-debian2. I have installed gnome, samba, mysql5, apache2, php5, and Virtualbox,bridge-tools on them. On serveur-debian2, i installed an other virtual debian lenny with apache2,mysql5,php5,nagios and centreon on it to view my network. I remember having installed a soft to access nntp on serveur-debian2 in order to test nagios.
Since a few days, i have problem to access to my servers. rom my windows 7 client, i try to ping serveur-debian1. Response is OK but not for all resquets Always from the same computer, i try to ping serveur-debian2. Response is OK but not for all again.
When i launch a ping on serveur-debian1 and serveur debian2 at the same time i have:
ping 1 to 10: serveur-debian1: response OK
serveur-debian2: no response
ping 11to 14: serveur-debian1: no response
serveur-debian2: response OK
ping 15 to 25: serveur-debian1: respone OK
serveur-debian2: @ip serveur-debian1 network unreachable (there's no error, it shows me the ip of serveur-debian1)
If i switch on the debian virtual server on the serveur-debian2, and i ping it at the same time, the response is OK for all resquests. The problem is very strange. I can't have a correct connection and when i launch a request from a software which access the mysql server, the requests failed ...

About 4 years ago I selected a new solution to back up our Linux servers, and have had no problems except that the backups fail twice a year due to DST [1]. After a recent upgrade, I am experiencing what appears to be a memory leak in the beremote process, which grows larger every day. At one point after all backups were finished, the idle beremote process took 2gb of RAM and interfered with the normal function of the computer. Fortunately, the problem is intermittent.
Technical support informed me that they only officially support [2] RHEL up to version 5.4. I was advised to restart the Linux agent every day after the backup has finished.
This could be taken to mean that they do not officially support computers that have automatic updates enabled, since they would bring a system up to version 5.5.
I back up both Linux and Windows clients.

I just made a fresh installation of Ubuntu Karmic, but I can't set up my screen resolution correctly. My monitor resolution (1680 x 1050) is not listed in 'Display Preferences' or in my card's proprietary software (ATI Catalyst). The maximum resolution I can select is 1440 x 900.xrandr detects a maximum resolution of 1440 x 1440 and displays the same list of screen resolutions as 'Display Preferences'.
But when I enter the line:
